    For just that reason, I photoshopped out a bunch of people that were in one of my pictures from Port Arthur, Tasmania.

    I think people can make very interesting subjects, but I just don't have the courage to take pictures of strangers most of the time. A lot of my "portrait" shots are from behind. :p

    I did have the fortune of living in Paris for a while, though, which is about as good as it gets for people-watching:

    I believe so. That lens has been retired, though, doesn't work well with my new camera.

    Are you sure? What camera are you using now? The 24-105 is an excellent lens, all things considered, and in fact President Obama's official portrait was taken with it. Nikon would do well to match it. It's fully compatible with Canon's best and newest cameras (and EOS film SLRs as well).

    You should enlighten me on aperture blades. I'm guessing it causes the raying patterns, since I can't get the same effect with my new lens. What does the number of blades affect?

    Well, the number of blades affects how the out of focus areas are rendered, though the precise mechanics of that are well beyond me. That Canon uses 8 blades on the magnificent 135/2L tells me that they really believe eight is as good as nine, though I assume many of their lenses also use nine. Nikon uses either seven or nine, depending on the lens. I used to assume that the best out of focus areas were reserved for lenses with 9 blades, but now I know that's not the case. The manual focus Nikkor 105/2.5 produces a very smooth out of focus area, easily a match for some of the best out there, like the 70-200 Mark I. I believe the out of focus rendition is also affected by the number of glass elements in the lens, the shape of the elements, the amount of spherical aberration/correction and so on.

    Landscape is boring? I guess I approach it the same way I do portraits or more abstract stuff: I see something interesting--how can I make it into a photo? It's the same challenge no matter what I'm shooting.

    An admirable approach :). One I'm sure I could do more to emulate. I just don't have the patience for anything but people photography, along with some animal photography. I like looking at landscape photos, as it's a genre of photography that gives us some of the most memorable images the world has seen. I just couldn't do anything more than a mediocre job at it myself.

    Random people don't hold an interest for me in photography.

    By talking with people, either before, during and/or after taking their picture, they stop being random and become someone you know. I don't know the names or any personal details of the couple that helped give me my favorite shot so far. I don't think I'll ever top that experience. Match it, perhaps, but I won't exceed it. Of course, if I took pictures of them today, I would have gotten their names and probably an e-mail address to send them pictures.

    I didn't talk with the mother I photographed above, but I did talk for some time with the mother of this one:

    [image=http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2537/4007910940_a06771e9af_b.jpg]

    Photographing people is something I almost have to do, and I'm rapidly closing in on dropping the "almost." Whether I know them or not, if the image is memorable, I'll go for it if I can.

    Terr: Most street photographers (I consider myself as being one) start out with shots from behind and then gradually progress to closer shots and get bolder as they get more comfortable with the idea of photographing strangers. My early work was uniformly terrible, with just one exception (mentioned above).

    Yeah, but I hate people.

    Seriously, I'm just not a people person. I mean, its also why I avoid being in my own pictures. I've got... I think.... 1 picture of me in Ireland, under duress, no pictures from the UK, and only a handful of me in Australia. When I could when traveling, every so often I could convince my then gf to be in a picture occasionally (and a handful that she didn't realise she'd walked into the shot for) but generally speaking, people don't hold interest for me in photography, with the exception of actually covering an event. Otherwise, I've a misanthropic photographic sense, I guess.

    HDR before & afters. The process benefits some photos more than others.

    [image=http://pilotproductions.us/photography/bigben_ba.png]

    [image=http://pilotproductions.us/photography/londoneye_ba.png]

    edit- HDR is the process of capturing several identical frames shot at different exposures and having a handy computer program combine them all so that both highlights and shadows appear to be properly exposed in one photograph. Excessive tinkering may lead to garish results.

    [image=http://pilotproductions.us/photography/bigben_hdr.png]

    Good call KW.

    You may want to explain the basics of HDR photography. It's not something many people are familiar with.

    Interesting. I've only ever seen HDR in games, I had no idea it existed elsewhere.

    Is it common in games? I was not aware that it's used in them.

    I've been curious about this - Do cameras have an hdr setting where they automatically take the picture at several different exposures? Or do you have to reset in between each shot? If so how do you account for camera movement or something in the scene moving?

    It's quite common in new games, mainly the graphically rich, HD type.

    Traditionally the in-camera portion of HDR photography was fully manual, and a tripod was a major requirement. Recently, they have started making cameras (like my Pentax) that have a built in "auto-bracketing" feature, which takes a series of shots (3 or 5, in my camera's case) at increasing exposures. The shots are still taken one after the other, so a particularly steady hand is needed if you want to ditch the tripod.

    More HDR shots from my Europe trip:

    That looks like an interesting exibit at Versailles. When were you there? I visited in June & as far as I know there weren't any huge balloon animal sculptures on display.

    This was last September. It was a very controversial exhibit as Koons is an... interesting artist. It's basically pop art, and the placement of the exhibit in Versailles is obviously meant to get people talking. A lot of my fellow students did not like it at all. There were few pieces I liked, but on the whole the art was meh. However, I liked the intention behind the exhibit, which was to force people to consider how vain the people in Versailles were. Personally, I think this needs to be done more in Versailles, but should happen through historical means not really with art by an artist who is frankly kind of an egomaniac himself.

    There was also a giant balloon at the end of the Hall of Mirrors

    [image=http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/Fedaykin_451/100_1221.jpg]

    While I was at the Tower, there were some actors doing a mock tournament. I took this picture as they were getting ready.

    Here's one of the actors talking to a boy. They stayed in character the entire time.

    I love Warwick. I used to live in the Midlands so we took day trips there quite often.

    I remember once going to see Robert Dudley's tomb in the church, some old lady was down there and refused to let me leave without giving me the entire history of Elizabeth and Dudley's relationship. 8-}

    So anyway, one more photo:

    Next on my list is Scotland... Hopefully I can pull off going there after I graduate next May.
