Well, I'm putting a little something together at the moment...not sure if it'll be for the contest.

 

OK, Feb. 1st is coming. What is the status of this?

Is Dorkman giving the prompt?

It would be nice to know before Wednesday so it can be included in the MS Update.

 

I'll give the prompt sometime on Wednesday morning (my time), in its own threads, and with the rules for this month's entries. The prompt may be a theme, a "spark word", an opening line, or something else. All entries must include the prompt in some way, preferable as more than a passing reference.

The rules as they are stated in that thread will not be debatable for this contest (i.e. if you don't like one of the rules for whatever reason, tough it out or don't enter), but I'm willing to discuss and revise them for future competitions. It's just that if I change the rules mid-session, it negates the purpose of having them.

I will also put out a call for judges at that time, so that anyone who does not plan to write a story can volunteer.

That sounds neat, but I thought we decided awhile ago the prompt wouldn't be a specific line or piece of dialogue? Theme sounds like it'd be best.

Hooray for almost being February 1st though!

 

I think anyone worried about their creativity being stifled from having to include a specific line or piece of dialogue is thinking about it in entirely the wrong way. Creativity gets the most exercise when it comes to dealing with obstacles. The point of the prompt is to give everyone the same basic foundation for the story, and make it easier to measure the stories against each other.

Well, I disagree on that, but I am not trying to restart a debate or anything, I just thought that we as a group had decided against making the prompt be a piece of dialogue or a certain line? I might be wrong on that though, but I thought most of us had agreed on the prompt being some sort of basic theme/concept.

Certainly I do not want to make a big deal out of it, I was just under the impression that's what had been decided. I may be mistaken!

Scott, getting the juices to flow diffrentiates from person to person. Some are great at making something out of nothing and some would rather find very specific stimuli. I'd be alright with this "one line" being like a little anecdotal saying or a "Confucius quote", but no fictitious names, etc..., please.

I was and am of the mind that the prompt should be restricted to being a spark-word or theme.

That's the first and last I'll say on this subject. Just providing two cents.
