Well lets throw this in then regarding Mary Donaldson

Why do the media keep refering to her as "Australian" Mary Donaldson, when she has given up her Australian Citizenship to be a Danish Queen?

She is no longer Australian but Danish.

She even has a Danish Accent now.

If the goverment threw an Australian Citizen out (revoked his/her citizenship) then would people still refer to that person as an Australian?
    I don't think so.

    I do.

Go move to America, people will hear your accent and still call you an Australian.

Listen to how ridiculous this conversation is - "I no longer have a piece of paper that identifies me as Australian, therefore I am not Australian!"

    What is an 'Australian' anyway?

    What is an 'Australian' anyway?

Someone who was born and grew up in Australia like Mary Donaldson was.

So it's based on geographical location?

What if I was born in Australia but into a Greek family and raised in their traditions? What if I was born and grew up in Australia but then decided to move to the USA and spent the rest of my life there? What if I was born in the UK but then I moved to Australia? What if I was born in Australia but spent half of my growing up years in Papau New Guinea, continually travelling back and forth between the two countries? What if I was born in another country and lived there for 20 years but then decided to emigrate to Australia and settle there (such as refugees), does that mean I can't be an 'Australian'? What if I was born in Australia but can't prove it?

    Vegemite is an abberation.

    But onto other things.

The bit of paper that identifies your nationality means nothing.

If I got a passport from the province of hutt (or whatever it was called), does that make me Huttian, and not an Australian? Hmmmm?

Mary Donaldson will speak Danish with an Anglo accent for years. She will not get rid of it.

My argument is, that your nationality can be whatever you want it to be. I am Australian. I was born here. My Mum was born in Chile, and live here, but considers herself Chilean, but her parents, who live here also, consider themselves Chilean and Argentinian.

Sometimes I just say my Mum is "Western" it simplifies things :)

What needs work? My post or my sarcasm?

Well, why would I be critical of it when I am an ex pat Pom?
I was born and bred in the UK and moved to Oz 5 years ago, so I think that I might be a tad hypocritical if I was against Dual Citiznships. :)
But there again that is all in my bio.

    Hehehehehe... :D :D

My argument is, that your nationality can be whatever you want it to be.

Agreed. I lived half my life in South Africa (and thank God I still don't have the accent), and half my life here. I consider myself Australian. :) [face_plain]

And no...that last face wasn't to indicate that I was being sarcastic.

I think how long you spend in a place also determines how you see yourself...

On a micro-level for example, I consider myself a Canberran even though I have lived in Brisbane for 10 years (I am 21) but my 19 year old sis considers herself a Brisbanite. Interesting eh?

I guess in a few years time, Princess Mary might see herself as more Danish, as she imerses herself in thet country's culture?

Nah, we won't run out of things to say. And he won't run out of stupid things to say...it's like the circle of life, Ender, because there'll always be disagreements between us [face_plain] :D And so we'll never run out of things to disagree with...

    Yes...
