    for the dual phase question:
Dark apprentice is probably both the first mention and the first time it is named. I do not think that Vader is mentioned as every using the second phase of his saber in the early EU(Vader and Anakins sabers have been retconed as dual phase for a while now) or in the novelizations of the original three films. So it is probably Dark Apprentice as that came out shortly after the EU was revitalized by the Thrawn Trilogy. Examples we have are Neeja Halycon's saber(also used by Corran), Gantoris', Anakins, Vaders. Corran also attemps to make one himself during I, Jedi when he is undercover with the Invids.

The Star Wars Sourcebook mentions "Some sabers had variable blade length, shortening for close fighting, lengthening to hold an enemy at bay."

Then you can properly try to smack him with the stick as you both try to charge or as mentioned just shoot him. ;)

Horses are a loot thinner than banthas, I think small elephants would be a better comparison. Do anybody know how fighting from the back of an elephant is done?

Usually there was a riding on the elephants shoulder area and then at least one or maybe two guys on further down the back with spears or bows.

Above is The surviving example of Elephant war armor.

Also in North Africa they had platforms bulit on the back kinda like Lord of the Rings but on a Much smaller scale.

That looks similar to the Vulcan lirpa, but you probably meant, have we seen anything like that in Star Wars.

Try sith or ratakn weapons. A force imbued blade could be modeled in such a way

    regarding lightsabres the wook' says
and I was wondering how this go togheter with Qui-Gon's door "opening" in the Phantom Menace.
    begins at 6.00 below

If the electromagnetic field caused resistance when it hits dense material would not he be unable to put his 'saber into the hilt in the door after the security doors slamed down?
