I'm reading the Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel. Its about a rag-tag Jesuit mission to a planet with intelligent life.

Just finished Betrayal - loved it!

 

"The Hot Kid" by Elmore Leonard

Better-than-average story about a young crook and a young lawman around the end of prohibition, each one striving to be the best at their work while simultaneously falling for their own image in the media. Great supporting characters (typical of Leonard) and a nice cop/robber parallel that reminded me a lot of the movie "Heat."

all I been reading is comic books and rotting my brain, but i bought a book for a recent flight that i enjoyed muchly: killing yourself to live, by chuck klosterman.

i first experienced chuck's writing through sex, drugs and cocoa puffs, his awesome collection of pop culture essays. then i went back and re-read his first book, fargo rock city, his memoir of growing up in the middle of nowhere in a hick town and loving hair metal.

this latest book is a bit too self-indulgent in spots, but it really moves, and has his trademark great twists on the english language, along with some interesting and fun observations on pop and trash culture.

 

I just read Dune for the first time.

Dune + Peter Jackson = nerdy wetdream

 

Just started reading "Darth Vader- Dark Lord Rising".

So far, so good.

Also finished The Hot Kid by Elmore Leonard recently and thought it was a really fun book.

 

Just finished Eragon.
A children's book, a fantasy, along the lines of Harry Potter in that I think it has a lot to offer older readers.

Or did I like it because I'm such a child?

I just read all the empire comics. Which were okay. Now I'm reading Underworld by Don Delillo, which is more baseball-y than I really care for. But theres a zany old art broad, so snaps for that.

 

I've been reading Civil War, along with Green Lantern Corps and Justice League of America.

 

I usually read two books at the same time... one at work and one at home.

The work one is Star Trek: New Frontier book 13 "Gods Above". I like this series of novels more than a couple of the official television series. The characters aren't cookie cutter boy scout types... some of them are totally the opposite of what is expected of a Trek character. Good stuff.

The other is Vampire Hunter D - Volume I. Yes, this is the book that the original anime film was based off of and it finally got an English translation. The movie is pretty faithful to this (minor details aside) and it's a fast paced and fun. I can't wait to read the other 3 books in the series (which I happen to own as well).

 

I recently finished Stars and Stripes Forever and have started the follow-up, Stars and Stripes in Peril, both by Harry Harrison. They're alternate history books stemming from a single premise:

In the early days of the Civil War, a Union ship stopped and boarded a British mail packet, the Trent, and took captive two Confederate diplomats. This action enraged the British people and government to the point of war, and a harsh ultimatum to the U.S. government was drawn up by the Prime Minister. Fortunately Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, intervened and reworded the message so that it allowed President Lincoln a way to save face while still releasing the Confederates.

But what if Albert, who was dying even as he rewrote the dispatch, had not had that opportunity? Would Britain truly have gone to war in America? How might that have transpired?
