Hello SWAP! I will be in Pittsburgh in April, during the time of Relaxicon, but I was wondering what is there to do in Pittsburgh aside from the convention? If you could let me know what sort of tourist attractions you have, museums, amusement parks, restaurants, etc. I would be very appreciative.

    Hello!

    Here's my take:

    Museums:
    Carnegie Science Center
    Museum of Natural History/Art

    Amusement Parks:
    Kennywood (www.kennywood.com)

    Restaurants:
There are a bunch of nice places- but the only true Pittsburgh restaurant is Primanti Bros.

Also check out the Strip District (a heavily ethnic area) and Station Sqaure (shopping and restauants) . You can take tours of the city at the Square, and downtown is pretty neat to walk around. I especially like Market Square, which is located at the base of PPG Place, the big castle like building that looks like it is made of glass (and was featured in the movie Inspector Gadget)

    Hey MaraJadeFan!

If you're into the bar / club scene, then the places to go are the South Side and Strip District. The South Side has a TON of bars and great places to hang out, and people usually bar hop! Mario's, Nick's Fat City, The Lava Lounge, Shootz Cafe... The Strip has alot of great clubs, as in Have a Nice Day Cafe, Sports Rock, Metropol... just to name a few.

Oh, and you have to eat at Primanti Bros, located at both places!

    More info:

    SouthSide

    Strip

Thanks for the responses so far... keep em' coming! :D I am also a big Star Wars collector... I know there will be dealers at the con but usually their prices are a bit high. Does anyone also know where there are any good collectibles shops in your city?

    Greetings, blokes.

Mara_Jade_Fan, if you're looking for a nifty collectible shop, there's one I'm rather fond of in the South Side on Carson Street called Groovy! Pop Culture Emporium that has some really cool stuff.

Although they have a smattering of just about everything I remember from my youth (including old Atari games/systems, board games, G.I. Joes, and whatnot) they also have a healthy serving of Star Wars stuff. If memory serves, the entire front left side of the store contains a rather respectable collection of really old-school SW toys and other sundry objects.

They also had some awesome Evil Dead shirts that I couldn't quite afford last time I was there...

At any rate, if you're in town, and have some time to jack around, it'd probably be worth a visit.

Suddenly remembers his Muppet Show lunchbox,
    Yours Truly

Groovy is awesome, I used to stop in there all the time when I worked in South Side. Although sometimes they can be pricey.

Well, for collectibles you should come to me. Besides being the CR, I am also the Toy and Collectibles Rep here.

Rox mentioned Groovy's on the South Side. I was just there last Saturday (2/8/03) and found some good stuff. Actually the prices are pretty reasonable. Although they don't have much in the way of "carder" stuff. They have tons of loose SW figs and ships from vintage to POTJ (the Power of the Jedi Line).
There's a Bill and Walt's Hobby store off of rt 19 in Ross township. They don't often have much and only cary stuff from 1995 and up. Another shop is Action Figure Cantina also on Rt 19 in Wexford. This guy is a little pricey but usually has everything new and has some great vintage stuff.

If you want to go on a "hunt" with me (that's my term for toy shopping) I'd be glad to oblige. I have transportation so don't worry about that. Besides these specialty stores I hit the following every week:
    4 Toys R Us (in west mifflin/robinson town center/ross township/cranberry)
3 Wal Marts (in west mifflin/robinson town center/cranberry)
3 KB Toys (in west mifflin/robinson town center/ross township)
and on a rare occassion the K-mart by me in west mifflin.

If you need to know who has what and where and for what price, I'm the guy.

Let me know if your interested in the GRAND tour. If you want we can go to Primanti's as Shewski suggested. The place is known for big sandwiches that have french fries and coleslaw piled on top. (Don't knock it, it's actually pretty good) And they have a big selection.

My fiancee may or may not want to tag along. She's cool. She likes SW as well and collects other toy lines, like Digimon, Simpsons, Batman (Animated) and the new Muppets line. (Now people can see why we don't have too much money...Ha Ha)

    Well, let me know.

Hi Sal! I would love to go on the Grand Tour! :D I have a feeling I am going to spend a lot of money on this trip, and will most likely have to mail all my purchases back home. That isn't a problem though as I will already have to be mailing my lightsabers, Jedi and Imperial Guard costumes home after the con anyway. The restaurant sounds wonderfull also... it you are ever in So Cal, you will have to let me pay you back by taking you on a Trench Run over here. There is a great collectible shop in Orange County CA called "Echo Base" which is all Star Wars stuff. :D

EDIT: And Sal... if you are such a big collector, why don't you post on the Collecting forum on the JC? I moderate it you know. ;) Some of the other CRs/RSAs post their too, as well as the collecting advisors for most fanforce chapters.... (okay... end of my plug for the collecting forum... come stop by the TapCafe thread at least and say Hi.) :D

To be honest I didn't know of the Collecting thread. Gimme a link, please.

I'm rather busy here with this group and several other toy sites as well as the 501st and Jedi Assembly websites/groups.

(It's safe to say my life is enraptured by SW)

    How big is your collection?

I'll show you.... never mind. That line always receives innuendo.

Are we allowed to post pics of our collection there?

    Another Imperial Guard eh? :D

We possibly could have an entire Guard escort at the comicon! 6 of us now possibly! (and feasibly even more if the guys from the Ohio squad come!)

    Hmm, I think I like! :D

Here's a thought, how about our group (Pittsburgh Fanforce) have a meeting a this time and have all out of towners like you (Dark_Jedi_Kam) and Mara_Jade_Fan and so on join us. It would be nice to meet fellow fans and fanforce members.

Sal, we were going to have the regional meeting at the con, perhaps we can all just meet for dinner and have a regional meet then :)
PS there is a thread on it in the CR forum regarding how many out of towners are attending ;)
