I'm curious to see what Star Wars fans think about Yoda joining Luke on his journey to the Cloud City in ESB. ?? Could he have helped Luke at this point in time, or was he too old to be of any service. I see Yoda/Luke as being a pretty good combo if Yoda uses the Force while Luke uses his saber. I think those 2 could have taken Vader out pretty quickly. Or would they have just triggered Sidious back into action? What do you think?

I think all that transpired was what was best for the narrative. Maybe this would have happened in a prequel style OT, but never the ORIGINAL OT. Sure, a Luke/Yoda tagteam would make short work of Vader (The X-Wing lifting sequence showed that Yoda was still strong with the Force. I'd have a hard time believing that a 900 year-old Jedi Master would lose all his strength/power within the last, what, 20 years of his life?) but I think at that point, Obi-Wan and Yoda realized that their time had passed, and that it was time to pass the reigns of the NEW Jedi Order on to the NEW hope, which was found in Luke Skywalker, and Luke Skywalker alone. Like how Palpatine admired and secretly crafted Anakin as if he was the SITH's Chosen One, Obi-Wan and Yoda did what the Sith Lord before him did: hide out quietly, biding their time, and allowing other galactic events to occur as they were meant to, until the time was right to nudge Luke into the fold; in this way, Luke was to Obi-Wan and Yoda what Anakin was to Palpatine in the prequels. In a way, Luke (just Luke) was necessary to ensure that the Chosen One fulfilled the Prophecy. Yoda probably knew that he had no role in it. It was a father's LOVE for his family/son, something we all know the Jedi did not preach kindly of in the PT, that played the pivotal role in Vader fulfilling the Prophecy. Again, Yoda probably knew that Vader's love of family, something Yoda was too old and rigid to fully understand, was what could possibly destroy Vader. That's why he kept his hands clean of the whole thing.

Remember, too, that Yoda wouldn't have gone anyway. He was vehemently against Luke cutting short his training to go save his friends.

Besides, where would Yoda have fit in Luke's X-Wing? :p

You have to remember that Yoda must remain hidden. If Luke gets killed or is turned, Yoda needs to be able to teach Leia without hinderance. He cannot risk his life to help Luke when so much hangs in the balance.

Shoulda coulda woulda......didnt. Anyway Yoda was around 900 years old when this happened, so any type of combat would have probably not been the best idea. Also he would have taken a risk of being discovered by the empire is he came out of hiding..

Well, this brings up a whole other can of worms. Why didn't Yoda train Luke and Leia at the same time and have them take on the Empire together? That would have made the most sense.

i'm not sure it would make sense.

the jedi were not going to win a head on confrontation with Sidious, Vader and their empire.

Not with Yoda, Luke, Leia and Kenobi, not with all the Jedi that had ever lived, they simply weren't going to win that fight.

trying to take them on all at once like that would have simply resulted in making it easy to wipe the Jedi out once and for all by putting them all in the same place together.

this is similar to asking why Yoda never tried to beat Sidious again, he had a chance to win the first time.

I can only conclude that Yoda thinks he has a much better chance of being killed in that fight than winning, i am talking overwhelming odds here, like yoda looses 99 times out of 100.

the clones being a deterant never worked for me, they are shown to be so weak minded that they would have happily escorted yoda right to the emporer with just a little use of the force.

in the end yoda is wiser than this, he follows the will of the force, not his or his orders agenda. Yoda made that mistake once and the jedi paid for it with their lives, by surrendering his goals to the will of the force and letting it direct the childrens lives all worked out in the end and he, kenobi and the order were finally redeemed.

Yoda would be dead. Luke would be dead. Leia would be dead. Han would be dead. 3P0. R2, Lando, Lobot, Chewie, E-3P0, etc. would be dead.

If Yoda had been so stupid as to show up on cloud city, then Vader would have killed them.

And yes, I think Vader could have easily taken out Yoda in a force/saber battle. But he wouldn't, and he doesn't have to.

The Executor and the rest of the squadron would very simply vaporize Cloud City from orbit. End of annoying green problem. End of the rebellion. A day long remembered.

I'm pretty sure the Emperor wanted Luke so badly be cause he knew Yoda was out there still. He wanted to get him before Yoda did, or he wanted the kid as protection from any "jedi" Yoda had trained in the last thirty years. Either way, with Yoda dead, Luke isn't needed anymore.

    So vaporized it is.

Yoda has to stay on Dagobah doing what he does best, hiding and teaching Luke, like he does in the movies. Yoda should not fight anyone in the OT.

Your first paragraph IMO is inaccurate. In theory Yoda should still win. In comparison Palpatine looks frail additionally to ROTS but that's not much to go on. We know Yoda is near the end of his life but his power with the force (X-wing lift) shows no evidence of weakness in ESB.

    The section I underlined. [face_laugh]

Whats the point of Yoda going with Luke? Supposing they killed Vader, Sidious would just get another apprentice and get the whole galaxy on the last 2 Jedi in existance.

Star Destroyers don't have that kind of power. Death Stars, yes, but not Star Destroyers. Luke and Yoda would be gone after they captured Vader. Vader in confinement would be a good bargaining chip for the rebellion.

I too would have liked to have seen Yoda face off Darth Vader. Back when all of us(us 70's OT viewers) saw ESB in the theaters in 1980 I'm sure many of us
were wondering the same thing. They even play Yoda's music in an adventurous style as Luke runs through Cloud City. With PT style, you
could very well imagine Yoda flipping and hopping through Cloud City gleefully dispatching guards(ala fight with clones at Jedi Temple in ROTS).
The way ESB is set up is far more dramatic. We were all waiting for the face-off with Luke(ooh he's got the force now!) vs. Vader. Having Yoda there
would have robbed some of the build up to the shock of Vader -> Luke's father. (per the other thread here).

With the PT and EU instead of just seeing Luke as a limited force user too old to begin training we see him now as the most powerful Jedi ever if at least
same or not more so than Anakin of course tempered with his average humble farm boy joe background. i.e. Hard work every crop season. "yes sir". We were
all supposed to be that good kids back then while eating our honey combs and wheaties..

I think it would have been cool to see Yoda get slain by Vader, and then have Vader turn to Luke, school Luke, and then have the trilogy play out the rest the same way minus Luke's visit back to Dagobah.

ehh.... I think it would be a very very different story if Vader destroyed Yoda and schooled Luke. I don't think Luke not returning to Dagobah would be the only thing that would be different.

I more likely scenario than Vader slaying Yoda would be that Yoda comes in, just like in AOTC, after Vader has cut off Luke's hand and is preparing to bring him to his shuttle. Yoda forces Vader to flee and then Leia & co arrive to get them off Cloud City.
In ROTJ, the Sith would then know that Yoda's still around and a part of the plot might revolve around them trying to get him killed(kind of like how Palpatine tried to get rid of Obi-Wan in the beginning of ROTS).

i like this idea, but i don't think yoda is that good a combatant.

power does not equate to combat ability, none of the jedi are better combatants than the sith (Mace is a possible exception), they don't concentrate on it the same way.

I'm not sure yoda could force vader to flee, vader might just kill him.

true but yoda's goal was to capture or stop dooku.

by fleeing and escaping with the plans before yoda's backup could arrive he won.

Yoda lost that duel in terms of accomplishing goals, Dooku won.

running does not equal losing if escape is your goal.

    Dooku ran, but YODA LOST

I agree here. Yoda lost. Plain and simple. Had he won, Dooku would be either imprisoned, or dead. But either way the Death Star plans would be known. While Dooku escaped, he can deliver the plans, thus continuing the saga.

ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Had Yoda slashed Dooku and let the cylindar fall on Anakin and Kenobi, End of story. We'd all be wondering how Episode 3 was going to go, though, I'll tell you that!!!!

Yoda was on par with Palpatine. Dooku managed to escape because he took advantage of Yoda's compassion.
I seriously don't believe that Vader would be a match for him.

i think it worked out better the way it did with luke going by himself. plus if yoda was there fighting how would vader reveal luke's parentage to him?
