YKW's... well, something I don't know how to feel about? Weird? Annoying? Whatever?

Dad and and Lisette are getting married. [face_plain] I can't think of any logical reason for objecting - there's nothing in the marriage contract that says I have to get along with her more as a result. They're grown ups, they can do as they please.

In October though - I can't think of a more inconvenient month. My Brother is having his 21st that month also, and is generally annoyed. Kinda takes away from the awesomeness that is October. I guess I'll still be able to head to the pancake manor for my birthay though...

    Sorry, rambling. [face_hypnotized]

    YKW...strange?
Suddenly having the urge to make 325 posts to get a blue ring of stars next to my name.

Well, not really - but it might encourage spamfests.

YKW is odd, well my ears have been sore on and off for the last 3 months or so. I went to the doctor he gave me some antibiotics and a referal to an ENT specialist. Over the last couple of days the pain was getting really bad so I made an appointment and thanks to a last minute cancellation got in today.

What's odd is that I don't have an ear infection or anything like that. Apparently it's just a misaligned jaw causing painful incidents in my ear... On a scale of 1-10 of expected things to happen when you see a doctor, this one sits right at 1 wt*.

    YKW Surprising?

There are two Magnus Darcriders. This account, registered in 2000, and Magnus_Darcrider, registered in November 2005 when I started posting regularly on these forums. I wondered why my signature had changed back but could still be seen as the later one on older posts. I must have somehow gotten into the old account when i switched over to the new computer. Huh.

    YKW's making us laugh:

We've been subjecting the kid to Olympics on occasion, he's learnt about flags and he knows what the medal tally means.

End of the news and the financial stuff comes on. He sees the flags of the various nation's dollars and asks where Australia is coming in this.

( sorry Goob, stole this one )

YKW I hate (right at the moment) - Office programs. I've had more than enough of word processing and spreadsheeting to last me a very very LONG while.

    YKW?

    "Adherents of the Repeated Meme"

    I just got this.

Several years since the first new Doctor Who series aired, and I only just got this (or rather, when I started rewatching on the weekend I got it).

I feel a bit slow, but in my half-hearted defence I had thought they were saying something else besides "Meme"... [face_blush]

Heh, that's nothing. It took me 20 years to get a joke in The Young Ones once :p

Though my favourite one is still when Nathan didn't realise the joke about DC's premier escape artist Mr Miracle's real name being Scott Free :p

YKW... I don't know how to feel about...

Well I when I was in town at the start of the week I saw a nice red shrug. Since I've been looking for a nice red shrug for well over a year now to go with a dress I have, I was very excited. Well I went down buy it today (which I did) and in the buying discovered they classified the combine sizing 10-12 as "large". It was odd... It wasn't a shop dedicated to clothes for smaller people, it is a genuine fashion store. If I didn't want a shrug of that colour so much I would have thought about not buying it because of the seeming promotion of thiness. Is 10-12 really "large"? I know I'm not a small girl by any means, part of that comes from being tall. I've always been fairly fit, granted though I could stand to loose 10-15kg, but that wouldn't change my general size (which is determined largely by bone structure).

Female fashion sizes in Australia is schiphrenic at best. What is an 8 in one brand might be a 16 in another, so perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised. Also many brands don't stock sizes above size 12 so I suppose relatively speaking 10-12 would be a large. It just... seems wrong. I've never been for clothes being classified by small, medium, and large. I've generally found that such clothes don't fit too well, personally. However the whole association with clothing size and health kind of bothers me, especially when what would be considered a fairly average size is designated "large". Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it too. Didn't help that just about every girl who walked into the store while I was there was little more than skin and bone.

10-12 equalling large? Wow. Well that makes me a horrible fatty then - how depressing. [face_plain]

But your right - female sizing is a joke really.

It's happened in guys's sizes too - large is climbing down the ladder of sizing. Strange, really, considering we're #2 (or #1??) world's fattest nation per capita. You'd think that they'd start catering to that market and calling (guesses here) women's 14-16 large...?

To be honest Goobs, "normal size" range for women is 8-18. Anyone smaller than that is petite and needs to shop at special stores, and anyone larger than that is considered to be large, though "larger size" fashion models are (generally) size 16 and up. Of course there is always that case of the large fashion model who was a size 12, but there was HUGE outrage about that. Basically the girl was pretty but because she wasn't a size 6 she was put into "larger fashion modelling".

The point though is, that girls are taller these days, if you are taller you are generally larger, proportionally that is. The sheer dimesion across the body will not be the same for a 6' model and a 4' chinese gymnast. So the idea of a store selling size 12 and below, in THIS COUNTRY, is stupid, as only kids might fit the full range of sizes. The idea that it then promotes these sizes as healthy sizes is shocking. I'm all for the "don't try and treat obesity like it's ok" because we've been there, done that and I think it is BAD. However promoting the idea that you have to be less than a certain size to get nice clothes is silly especially when the "less than a certain size" would barely be considered the "average" size for a HEALTHY woman in this day and age.

My God, even at my skinniest (when I was nothing but skin and bones) I would have been classified as large. Don't even want to contemplate about how they would classify my current size.

Goob, I'd agree with you about men's sizes going down (I've stopped buying stuff for Tim, as he really needs to be there to make sure it fits). However, the difference is that you can get a XXXXL in men's sizes, even if it is from Lowes, but when Myer went to bring out a plus size young ladies set (instead of the stuff for 50+ women) they were accused of promoting obsesity.

Oh you have to be kidding? Right? And selling sizes only girls younger than 12 years can wear isn't promoting anorexia? Seriously, Myer is one of the worst large fashion chains when it comes to size availability. I've never seen anything larger than a 14 on the shelves, and only rarely see that. (Possibly because it sells quickly?)

I'm not for promoting the whole you are good how you look (in terms of weight) because it has led to this whole "my weight doesn't matter" attitude, which I consider to be bad. But there is a world of difference between someone of your size, Kit', and someone who is "medically" obese.

I've always found the self-esteem mantra "it's ok to be you" a be two edged sword. In terms of promoting self-esteem and confidence it's great, but it doesn't promote healthy eating and exercise habits, which are just as (if not more) important.

EDIT: Ok re-reading that it sounds a bit preachy, but I'll admit to being higly biased. Both my mother and my sister are "medically" obese. Given that my sister does at least do exercise once a day I swear it has to be something in the genes. Obesity brings with it depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These things are not cured by saying "it's alright to be you" these are things that happen when your body has that much extra fat that it physically isn't capable of producing the chemicals that generally keep us happy. There have been any number of studies done on this, and the same is true when you go the opposite way. Anorexia induces depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem because the body is malnurished and unable to produce the chemicals that make us feel happy. In short these two conditions feed themselves and it is a hard cycle to break. And it can't only be fixed with words. I'll try and stop ranting now.

Just spent an afternoon buying togs, so have some input into the fashion sizes agenda :)

Found myself in David Jones, not somewhere I'd normally go, but was told it's sale on gorgeous clothes and togs was worth it, and actually found myself trying on clothes in the size I thought I was and it fitting. Not a normal occurrance. Depends on the brand and shop what is a small, medium and large. Bought 3 pieces of swimwear for about 60 total..SO GO THERE IF YOU NEED STUFF!

    My rules: ;)
Small, I just shouldn't go anywhere near. small is about 8-10 to me.
A large is usually a 14-16, and no offence meant..I am, and have been that off an off lots.
Which makes meduim about-12-14 and I think 12-16 is about average size of Australian women
NEVER buy a t-shirt from overseas in a size other than large!
Always buy undies a size larger for comfort.
    And TRY ON EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!

And Lozza..don't lose 10-15 kilos. That would be ikky. No offence. You're gorgeous as you are, and that's not one of those "be happy with yourself" things :)

Having spent so long in retail, I believe Myer's choice in bringing out larger kids' sizes is for one reason: profit. It cannot be a lack of of corporate duty of care that they would do that. It's finding a new market and being the first/best to profit from it. (Unless they put chocolate in that department,) It's not likely their intent to encourage kids to become fatter...they do have fashion (a) line(s) for the thin thing that's been there for a long time. I'm not defending them, I am just saying where I see their approach.

It's why cars now have larger/more adjustable seats.

All for cars with more adjustable seats; my Hot Physio berates me every time I go on a long drive as the seats in my car have zero lumbar support and I usually end up worse off by the end.

Interesting discussion, and one I'm glad to hear. Not enough people worry about this and the implications. I can't really contribute, but I will reinforce what Kahlan said as it was the only part of the conversation that alarmed me; Loz, I'd be worried if you lost that much weight (and I doubt Kahlan and I would be alone there), so please don't.

Ok... When I was doing sport 6 days a week I was 70-75kg. Most of that was probably muscle. When I stopped and went to live in Spain, where all I did was walk walk walk, study, and drink I shed all that muscle and was a nice 60-65kg. My body existed at that weight quite happily. Somehow, between May and September I managed to put on 10kg. I've simply managed to put it on in places that are that aren't so noticeable, and because I have a tendency to prefer my clothes be larger rather than tighter, I still fit them. So when I say I could stand to loose 10-15kg, I really can. Wouldn't want to loose much more than that though as that would push the healthy weight range for my height.

Women's clothes aren't actually built for most women either as they fail to encompass the idea that some women have curves, broad shoulders and would rather their undies didn't show when they bent over.

As for Myer, I'd agree with the reasons that you came up with Goobas to why they came out with this clothing range now (especially having worked for Myer) but I don't think it makes it evil, or selfish just savvy. The article (and comments) you can find here it's from News.com which doesn't exactly make it well written (I love sensationalism).

You know what...made me double take?

Today I was near an elderly couple in the electronics section of a deparment store. They were discussing (amongst themselves) the pros, cons and tech associated with DVD recorders and recorders with hard drives. Talking about how many Gig's of this or that, or hours a blank DVD can record...
They were easily in their 70s.

    Good on 'em.

On the enquiries phones on Friday at work and I hear the person next to me laugh and say what sounded like..
"Gene Kelly is is working with Reindeers". I swear.

Turns out it was exactly what she said but it was another Kelly and the animal reference was a nickname of someone else.

Still, the images it produced in my head lightened the rest of my day!
