    ZFree gets chop

No more freebies as customers shift to paying service

    Fiona Mayo, Auckland IDGNet
TelstraClear says there's no such thing as a free lunch on the internet and has given ZFree the chop. The announcement comes as no surprise. Before TelstraSaturn's $435 million acquisition of it last year, Clear put a cap on new subscriptions to the free internet service, claiming it could no longer provide it if numbers continued to grow.

ZFree customers will be offered a new pay service, Home 150, which will run on CLEAR Net infrastructure. They will get five email addresses and 150 hours of internet access for $14.95 a month. Each hour after that will cost $2.

The service is to be "scaled down" from tomorrow, and will close on April 30. ZFree has around 250,000 subscribers. TelstraClear says during its lifetime, ZFree provided 57 million free internet hours to New Zealanders.
