Those Krazy Kat pages are amazing. And I've never actually known the origin of the phrase "Rube Goldberg," so that was pretty awesome to see too.

A slice-of-life strip, the publishers wanted to increase female readership, by introducing a baby. But the protagonist, Walt Wallet, was a bachelor. So a baby was left on his doorstep, whom he adopts and names Skeezix (slang for motherless calf.)

When King retired, the strip was handed over to his assistant, Dick Moores.

I've read some of this one, probably in reprints, when I was small, but beyond the style I remember very little.

Snuffy Smith would go on to be a strip everyone hates, no exceptions.

    Pop (1921)

    [image=http://lambiek.net/artists/w/watt_jm/millar_watt_pop_1.jpg]

    Original Title: N/A

First published by: Daily Sketch (UK)

    Creator: John Millar Watt(1895-1975)

    Genre: Humour

    Adaptation: N/A

    Award: N/A

    Influence on: "Blondie"

    Influenced by: N/A

"In 1921 [Millar Watt] created a comic strip for the Daily Sketch entitled 'Reggie Breaks It Gently' but the lead character was soon to became known as Pop, a rotund businessman usually to be found in a bowler hat, waistcoat, striped trousers and spats. The strip did not concentrate on city business but on Pop's family; Pop was a henpecked husband with two daughters, a son and a young baby. The strip was notable as it incorporated speech inside the panels in the American style (the dialogue running continuously across panels rather than in balloons) and the use of a continuing landscape across the (usually four) panels whilst the action was divided into frames in the foreground.[1]

The strip was one of the few British strips to be successfully syndicated in America and was praised widely by artists as diverse as Chic Young and Sir Alfred Munnings.

Watt continued to draw Pop until 1949, leaving to concentrate on lucrative advertising and illustration work. In the mid-1950s, he began contributing comic strips to the Amalgamated Press's Thriller Comics Library, also producing many covers for the same title between 1956 and 1959. He also contributed to the Robin Hood Annual and the girls' comic Princess. His full page illustrations in Look and Learn were a highlight of that magazine for many years."

I see it from time to time. It's amusing enough.

It did produce one of my favourite signature lines though: "Without my ignorance your knowledge would be useless."

Haven't been on in any regular capacity due to being back & forth between the States and Ireland, but the past few entries on this list have been grand. I picked up a coffee table collection of Gasoline Alley a few weeks back. But, these have all been good.
