Several people have indicated an interest in the Alpha Base costuming workshop on 6/29. I've been looking for a libary meeting room. My preference would be Kent as it's open on Sunday from 1-9pm. However, they aren't taking reservations at this time. If I can get a room there, I will and thus the location will change.

But for now, I have the Fairwood Library reserved. That's in Renton.
Fairwood Library has a map and directions from all locations.

Hours for the workshop will be the same as the library 1-5pm.

I will come with lots of patterns, pattern drafting fabric, some fashion fabric, a sewing machine, iron & ironing board. If you have one that's portable, bring a sewing machine. If there's something specific with which you want help, email me at jedikai at attbi.com (that address will change on 30 June, probably to jedikai at comcast.net) My specialty, is, of course, Jedi.

Dang! So of course this workshop is the day after the event where I'm going to need my newest costume done!

But I'm sure I can come up with something else to work on. :) And the last one was fun, so that's reason enough to come to this one.

Tacky Tourney, actually! :D

This years theme is Lord of the Rings. And I should be doing something tacky, but I can't help it, I'm doing a costume reproduction instead. This one.

You should come! We'll be playing ring toss!

Fabric update, with the costuming workshop in mind.

JoAnn's latest flyer lists anywhere from 30-50% off during Firefly Frenzy 2 day sale, June 13 & 14 (THIS weekend)

My fav on-line fabric seller, Phoenix Textiles or fabric.com has....

Merino 100% Wool (Merino is GOOD wool and this is a GOOD price, but you don't get good quality wool cheap) in a light brown color suitable for Jedi Robes at $8.95/yd, 60 in wide

Wool flannel in a light brown $8.95/yd

Look through the Linen and Linen blends, there are several fabrics suitable for Jedi tunics. However, choose medium weight (light and hanky weights are too light).

The 50/50 Poly/Rayon section has a couple colors that are OK for tunics

They're just $3.95 per yard but might not be as cool as linen or cotton, but would be easy care.

Osnaburg Natural is a great choice for Jedi tunics, is 100% cotton and only $3.95/yd for 45" wide

Ah, except, at the moment, it may be out of stock as I can't figure out how to order it.

There are 2 good Cotton Twill colors. This is a good price too $4.35/yd for 60" wide 100% cotton. I'm buying some now!

Though cheap, stay away from the broadcloth. I love this fabric but I have the swatches and they're too lightweight for Jedi tunics. I do use them for street clothes, like light, full skirts.

How many yards of fabric do I need for the Jedi Robe itself, and how many yards for the under-robes and tabbards/obi?

If you make the Jedi Robe according to Amber's pattern, it takes min 8 yards (and I'm only 5'2")

Cutting the long tabbards adds a lot to the yardage for the tunics. Figure about 3 yards ea for over and undertunics and then add to that the length you want your tabbards (you can usually cut all four from a 60 inch width of fabric). So, to be safe, maybe 10 yards. But that's my guess-ti-mate for 60in wide fabric. It's more if the fabric is 45 in.

Thanks Jedi_Kai! I'm 5'9" so would I need more fabric, or is 8 yards still enough for the outer robe?

Probably not, as it would be too short. It should nearly touch the ground. I BARELY got mine within 8 yards. And that was only with putting a seam in the hood lining.

Amber's pattern takes more fabric than a normal coat pattern would, I think.

So I'd add at least an extra yard, if I were you, maybe 2 if you don't want to try to squeak it in with a seam in the hood as I did.

The hood and sleeves are enourmous.
