i caught a couple of shows of Australian Idol when i was back a few weeks ago and have been watching his performances since on youtube... fracking amazing. i've never liked a single performer on Idol enough to consider buying their album but i'll buy this guys. when he inevitably wins the whole thing i hope they let him put his own stuff on the debut album and not give him cheesy 'angels brought me here' crap.

watch this (if you haven't seen it already!)

Not being one to keep up with popular culture, I've never heard of him.

I watched that clip, and one other, and he's certainly much more talented than your average idol hack (Shannon in your big black car, I'm looking at you), but he's still not outstanding. His song selections leave a little to be desired and he's obviously trapped within the dodgy framework of idol. Nevertheless I liked the stuff that his band were playing, so maybe outside of idol he'll really shine.

And god that Holden guy is an idiot.

The cool thing about Mr. Bobby Flynn is that he came to the competition with own sound, he's not just doing karaoke of old hits like all the other kids. If he released an album of the songs he's arranged and sung during the Idol competition, I'd have to admit I'd seriously consider downloading it from Limewire.

Edit: not sure what that clip of but his arrangement/performance of "When The War Is Over" by Cold Chisel was quite, quite amazing. And I'm a tough audience at the best of times.

Okay, props to the guy for being a bit different but he makes me cringe. I have never felt strongly about Idol, mainly because I don't watch it and when I do catch a bit, the people who can sing are made to sing poorly to gain the love of a fairly bland audience. That's a given. I'm sure he can do much better than what we see on tv! But while he can sing, I personally find young Bobby's musical arrangements boring and soulsucking. He ruined Werewolves of London.

    RUINED. [face_sick]

Everything else has been, to my tin ears, same same.

But that's just my opinion. ;)

I'll take it a bit further and say that 'Idol' is terrible. As a Creative Arts student, there are many people I know who are trying to get into the industry using just their own talent and skill as musicians...so commercialised 'talent quests' like Idol just irk me.

    Yes, that's right: irk! [face_plain]

As a Creative Arts student, are you saying that the contestants on Idol lack any skill or talent as musicians?

Puls: The fact that you know who he is already rates as a win for "them". I'd somehow heard of Bobby Flynn before I'd even watched an episode. How, I can't tell you, but there you have it.

Frankly Bobby Flynn's haircut amuses me more than anything else. He looks as though he should be getting agitated vigorously headfirst down a toilet bowl.

that's the song i linked to...! and it was the first time i'd heard him, too. AMAZING performance, that one in particular. i almost orgasmed. Werewolves wasn't as good, true, miss PulsarSkate, but still worked, i say. and that means a lot. he was back on form with the Bowie song last week too.

    Kart, stop being stubborn.

Channel 10 is teh , werd!

Yeah, Channel 10 is all right by me. Any free-to-air station that actually ran X-Files for its full ten seasons, and is still showing Battlestar Galactica (albeit at a witching hour timeslot) has my vote.

Not to mention that Channel 9 and 7's "news" shows just annoy the hell out of me, and Ten ran "True Stories". Maybe there's still life in commercial TV after all.

Nope...it's just that there's little effort involved. There's competition, sure, but where is there not competition in the actual live/pub bands (etc.) scene? And then the first song they release is a piece of overcommercialised crap that they never wrote (and generally referring to the theme of struggle).

And don't get me started on the fact that they are made to fit a particular commercial mould that the judges are aiming for.

But sure, they have talent. Some of them.

i'm not disagreeing with the notion that Idol produces rather bland, commericial performers -- as i said, i've never really liked any of them once they were out in the real world.

    but not this guy!

ps: no one commented on my nifty title [face_whistling]

I don't want to de-rail the thread (but I don't think I am...my post is about Idol) but I wanted to paste something that a friend of mine wrote earlier today in another forum. It's a little biased in the beginning, but this is what I am getting at:

See, that's rather funny since it's obvious that said person hasn't watched any of Idol at all this season (I usually do because there's literally nothing else decent on at 7:30 Sunday night, so it's usually background noise while cooking dinner). Almost all of the ones chosen this year (at least that made it to the "finals") all performed an original piece to the judges in their audition. The quality of said piece might be up for debate, but all the ones they've shown were so. And to top it off one has released 2 small-time CDs, one was a part of a group that has provided backup or been guest acts on tours here and in the states, and another 2 are the frontmen for their own bands that have been gigging for a few years.

There is a lot of things you can rant about in relation to 'reality TV' very legitimately, but this all smells of sour grapes to me.

=D= well said. There truly is something wrong with Australia. I have watched EVERY season of Australian Idol & 2 season's of American Idol. I don't have a musical back ground, but I do know what I like & what sounds like garbage. Bobby absolutely butchers every song he sings. He's different all right..... I hope that Warren Zevon never hears werewolves of london because it nearly made my ears bleed...seriously. He has hair..lots of it & I know the girlies love his hair...they asked one girl in the crowd why she likes Bobby..her response" I like his hair" That speaks volumes. If you're looking for a cure for insomnia, Bobby's your man...if you want some one who can get you rockin' here's your man:

    Chris Murphy

I have no doubt that he won't win, I just hope that someone picks him up & gives him a recording contract because he sings the rest under the table. He won't win becaue he's not the best...he won't win because like Kyle Sandilands said last week " Australia has got it wrong the last 2 years " & they are heading that way again. Where is Casey Donovan now ? Kate Dearaugo ? Last week Lavina went & she had the best voice in the final 12 !!Chris & Lavina were in the bottom two despite this performance from Lisa Mitchell: Lisa

Australia really has no idea how to use their votes.. I rest my case your honor :)

I don't get the whole Bobby thing, don't get it at all

    You've got that right.

I know this is about the current series of Aussie Idol, but I want to give context of how I felt for the previous series'...

Personally I think that both Guy and Casey deserved to win. I am also not surprised that Shannon and Anthony seem to have done better in the money area.

I also think that Emily should have won, with Kate doing better sales.

    This year's crop:

Bobby: Yeah I think he is a great singer, would love it if he won, however I don't think he is quite there yet, with time and training I am certain he would do well!
    Dean: Not a fan
Joseph: He stuffed up his performance that was voted on, but when he sung it again, having been voted off, he did much better. I hope he has fun singing in the shower.
Lisa: GET HER OFF THE SHOW!! Unfortunately that my not happen tonight as she will be physically attached to her guitar, which seems to improve her performance, but still I want her out of here.
Chris Murphy: This guy is great, better than Courtney IMO. I think that he should stick with his band and release albums that way.
Mutto: MUTTO! I also think Mutto was decent, though I didn't like his performance of Eskimo Joe's 'Black fingernails, Red wine'. I also think he should release music as the front of his band.
Klancie: She was attractive, why did she have to go? I would say she was voted off because she sang too much country and nothing much else.
Reigan: I didn't pay much attention to her, so no comment.
Damien: How could you not like an Irish bloke? I think he has done well, but I think he is limited in talent and can only go so far.
Jessica: Aw my gawsh. She is fantastic! Some poor 'Paulini-esque' costume choices though.
Lavina: Possibly better than Emily so why did she get voted off? I am sure she will do fine outside of Idol though.
Ricky sticky, icky Ricky, go home please Mr. Muskat.

    On tonight's performance (currently showing)

Bobby: started off shakey but I enjoyed it. Mark's comment was too long winded but I agree with what he had to say.

Dean: So, so. He improved towards the end but it wasn't a 'touchdown' performance IMO.

    Chris: a nice ballad.

    Jess: Top notch!

Damien: Now that was some Irish brilliance!

the rest are yet to come...

Yes liked Damien, and love Bobby. He looks crazy but when you buy a CD, you aren't looking at him. Love the voice and is the only Idol contestant I have and would ever consider buying a CD from!

    Go BOBBY!

what about Dean ? Nobody mentions him...he's growing more into an artist every week. Tonight he seemed so comfortable up there, his performance was first class.

I'm afraid I just don't get it..not at all. Bobby just wails. If he were to release an album all the songs would be the same...no rock, then a ballad, no pop...just 12 songs of droning & or wailing. No versatility for mine :/
