Kids were scrapped from the Union storyline after Columbine happened. That was easy... the characters were drawn as adults even though they still acted like the children (teenagers) they were scripted to be....
but I can not see them editing out the planetwide destruction of Coruscanr Skyscrapers based on what just happened. First the novel would have to be not only delayed, but the storyline would have to be altered just to avoid any comparisons to what happened in new York. I see that as impossible to do at this point without ruining the overall story.
I hope this does not happen.

I agree. SxS has already been written, and if there is a forseeable problem, just pre-empt it by saying at the beginning "this was written before recent tragic events in New York and any similarities are coincidental. If the book had been scrapped or changed, we would have been submitting to terrorism. etc"

I agree with you. But we're already seeing other things, such as TV and movies, that are being effected by what happened Tuesday. This may mean little since those that I heards of were due out this month. And it's what, October, before SbS is due out? It frightens me that your statements that they may delete something from the book because of what has just happened. Because it may seen to be in poor taste. But does that mean that one of Clancy's books will be taken off shelves because it features a similar scene? I can't remember the title right now, but it features a second war with Japan and basically ends with a Japanese airline pilot turning terrorist and crashing his airliner into the Capitol Building while the President and most of Congress are there. Jack Ryan ends up becomeing the President because of it.

That's it, Debt of Honor. I was watching the constant news blitz we've been getting since this all started early, early, early Thursday morning and they had some guy saying how never had anyone come up with an idea like this prior to the terrorists. It was inconceviable that they could do it. And Peter Jennings interupted and said "Wait a minute, Tom Clancy wrote of something just like this in one of his books." All I was thinking when I first heard about the attacks Tuesday was that it sounded like what happened in Debt of Honor. Wonder if they read it and got the idea there.

I agree with you completely DL. Delaying the book now would alienate more fans then if they didn?t changed it. I say leave the book as is.

    I support this move actually.

    Why?

BECAUSE ITS' @&@(@*(@(@ POOR TASTE IN GENERAL TO WIPE OUT CORUSCANT!

I'm serious the NJO books are bordering close to pornography in their shameless promotion of mass genocide and violence in order to give the good guys more room to kill..

The point is made, the Vong are evil.

    Drop it.

The Vong need to continually outdo themselves. they can't just establish they're evil, then take a tea break.

I realize that I am probably not the best person to bring this up (being a pacifist), but the name of these books is Star WARS. Violence is a common occurrence in war, and attempts at genocide are not uncommon. It?s not pornographic; it?s realistic (well, as realistic as Star Wars can get).

Many media stories are currently being altered due to the disaster. Does anyone else think it will be ironic that in 10 years time there will actually be a movie depicting the exact events???

10 years time?...i think you overestimate the media's restraint...i'm willing to bet that somewhere in the US it is already begining the early stages of production, if only the scripting......it will probobly only be a made for TV docu-drama, but i'm willing to bet that it will be out within 18 months!, not a decade...

If you haven't noticed, the "good guys" haven't been killing Vong by the millions, it's the other way around. If Del Ray changes the storyline, it would be giving into the terrorism, giving up our freedoms and ways of life, and that's just what terrorist want. They want football games to cancelled, they want movies to be changed or scrapped. We shouldn't give them the pleasure to see that we're giving in.

I personally think it sucks that they are destroying Coruscant, and it has nothing to do with the recent events.

    No they don't Darth Ludicrious

The Vong can stop killing everything long enough so that they can be developed as characters. The atrocities can be on a smaller scale such as the devastation of families, civilizations.

Right now the destruction of Coruscant is just tasteless mind numbing genocide.

It's become impersonal evil instead of the destruction of Alderaan which was Leia's homeworld or the destruction of Coruscant being anything other than to drill home the bad guys are a threat. What exactly is the point fo this? Doesn't Coruscant have any more stories left in it?

Ithor was a cool concept but a bit excessive after Serepndipidal, Serendipidal worked because it established the Vong as bad arses.

However this excess is like a video game now and it's becomming physically painful to read the NJO.

It's degrading to Luke, Anakin, and everyone else's sacrafice that the Rebellion has actually HURT THE GALAXY in the Long run.

How's this for the NJO's slogan.

"WE WERE BETTER OFF UNDER THE EMPEROR! BLAME LUKE AND LEIA FOR BEING SHORT SIGHTED LITTLE PRIGS WHO HATE STRONG GOVERNMENT"

Coruscant is the symbol of this. It is the symbol of civilization and life.

It's like we beat the Nazis and Commies, disarmed, then aliens took over the Earth.

    As for giving into terrorism...

Spiderman being canceled as a movie because it depicted the Twin Towers is giving way to terrorism.

Keeping Coruscant alive is recognizing mind numbing violence for what it is.

the bombings I think are merly a wakeup call that it isn't funny, cool, etc to eradicate whole civilizations.

The Spiderman movie hasn't been cancelled. It was just the teaser trailer which contained scenes that wouldn't have been in the movie anyhoo.

Yes, I hope not either. I think TV shows, etc. were only put off because they would be in very bad taste at this particular moment. And no kidding. But I think an explanatory note at the beginning, as someone else mentioned, would allay anybody being upset and offended. Anyway it's not like any such people have to read it.

Personally, I agree that we cannot cower. I am not afraid. The best all around defense against these people is to show them that we're not going to be intimidated by their message. We are proud of our country, and now, a lot more appreciative.

I agree that SbS shouldn't be delayed or rewritten. Coruscant's probable destruction is a major point in the storyline of NJO. If you take it out or delay it, every other book in the series will be delayed. Three months is more than enough time between books. We don't need to wait for a rewrite. I feel that changing it would be surrendering to terrorists, and we shouldn't do that.

Whole civilization have been destroyed in the past by forces of evil. Destroying Courscant may be in bad taste to you, but it's a taset of reality to me. The NJO is telling us that everyone is threatened by the Vong. I think that Courscant will be the WTC of the NJO. It will be the wake-up call to the galaxy that the Vong are evil, and they must band together to stop them. Just because Coruscant is gone doesn't mean that hope is gone. Hope, is all that we have.

    Umm dude.

Coruscant isn't the World Trade center.

Read "Quality of Life" below for what it is.

It's the destruction of civilization as we know it. Once Coruscant (Rome) falls there will be no turning back...

It's the transformation of the Yzzumng Vong from the men who are invading our galaxy to the people who destroyed the Star Wars way of life.

If they destroy Coruscant, even if they're beaten back they've eradicated the New Republic forever and plunged the galaxy into a New Dark Age they will never rceover from.

The Empire bankrupted entire planetary systems and everyone was under mammoth horrofic taxes with species like the wookies enslaved in awesome ammounts to build the 25,000 star destroyers they did over 20 years, the Death Stars, and Executors.

Coruscant as a planetary city is central to the New Republic.

If it falls it would cost to repair it alone all the money that the Emperor spent on his fleet and no one is going to make that sacrafice for a nonfunctioning government.

I'm saying that the reaction of destorying Courscant will be similar. With the attack on the WTC, America banded together and now we're going after those who attacked us. When Courscant is destroyed, the galaxy will band together to fight the Vong. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear to you.

EDIT: And why would the New Republic repair a whole world during a bloody war? ?[face_plain]

Most likey, if they decide to restore Courscant, it will be well after NJO. The novels after NJO may be ones of the New Republic restoring the galaxy and the Jedi bringing peace.

?If they destroy Coruscant, even if they're beaten back they've eradicated the New Republic forever and plunged the galaxy into a New Dark Age they will never recover from.?

How do you know that they won?t recover? How do you know that destroying Coruscant will destroy the New Republic? Did Leia stop being royalty when her planet was destroyed? Just because the building that a government convenes in is destroyed does not mean that the government is destroyed. People make up a government, not a planet or building. If the right people survive, then the government will survive. We know that Leia survives and she has enough political skill to justly run half the galaxy on her own if she needed to. All she would need would be about fifty gofers (gofer this, gofer that) to do stuff for her when she couldn?t do it personally. It is possible that the New Republic?s name might change, but the government will live on.

[How do you know that they won?t recover?]

A matter of logistics. Coruscant is the oldest center of civilization in the galaxy and repeatedly described as it's hub.

The very starcharts of the galaxy read coruscant as 0.0.

The New Republic only had legitamacy when it took Coruscant no matter how many worlds it had and in the Period of Dark Empire when Coruscant was isolated as was the rest of the galaxy the galaxy looked like it had entered the Middle Ages.

[How do you know that destroying Coruscant will destroy the New Republic?]

    See above.

The Caamas incident nearly tore the Republic apart as the Bothans were blamed.

How can the climate be so radically different that the Republic will not be viewed as an ineffective organization since it can't save it's capital or all of its' citazens.

The government of the New Republics' fiscal assets are if there is any indication also located on Coruscant as well.

[Did Leia stop being royalty when her planet was destroyed?]

    Yes.

After Dark Empire II have you heard anything of Alderaan or New Alderaan? The Alderaanians have ceased to be a factor in the galaxy at large as has their culture.

Aside from Leia there is nothing left and my guess is neither Jacen, Jania, or Tycho and Winter's kids have much in the way of "Alderaanian national loyalty"

Because they're citazens of Coruscant. Alderaan the peaceful center of beauty and it's people are doomed.

[Just because the building that a government convenes in is destroyed does not mean that the government is destroyed.]

No the 216 billion technicians, diplomats, bank workers, clerks, bureaucrats, and intelligence operatives are destroyed. Plus all the buildings and materials and library works which allow the government to function properly.

[People make up a government, not a planet or building.]

And the people will mostly all be dead. When Washington D.C. burned admittadly the United States rebuilt it but the results could not nearly be so devastating in a technological organized society as today.

A centralized government such as the New Republic and yes, Rome.

[If the right people survive, then the government will survive. We know that Leia survives and she has enough political skill to justly run half the galaxy on her own if she needed to.]

Leia was overworked when on Coruscant she had to deal with being President of a government structure that still had surviving people and people who had traditional duties and even then it took 10 years to get it straightened all out from the Empire and galaxy...

How much when the government is bankrupted by the destruction of its'homeworld, all of it's records for taxes, all of its' librarys, precedents, and histories, and those who maintain the Holonet and the center for news?

After such is destroyed it'll be like the movie The Postman!

[All she would need would be about fifty gofers (gofer this, gofer that) to do stuff for her when she couldn?t do it personally.]

    Try about 50 million.

[It is possible that the New Republic?s name might change, but the government will live on.]

I'm just trying to be realistic. People are already talking about radically changing the U.S. Government with the world Trade center bombings....

Now imagine if New York had been annhilated along with Washington D.C. and we've lost half of our territory to foreign invaders?

Now imagine our culture is not homogeneous but hundreds of distinct towns and states with long histories of home rule and recent memories of government crackdown and repression.

It's just MHO that centralized government in a few years will cease to exist in a way that the Empire almost did (so many trouble systemd refuse to join the Republic) but this will surely climax.

Thousands of independant states with no leader to rule them all.

A new Dark Age for the galaxy
