If you didn't see it, on the previous page is an update on the upcoming release of Invader Zim on DVD.

Quick note: It has also been reported that the recent release of the original Battlestar Galactica-The Complete Epic Series with the popular "Cylon-head" packaging (almost thought about picking up the set just because of the cool box) will soon be disappearing from store shelves.

This week Universal announced that on Feb. 10th they are re-releasing the DVD set with different packaging, which will not include the outer box that was designed to look like the enemy of the Colonial Warriors in the show. The SRP of the new version will reportedly stay the same ($119.98). One speculation of the new release's look is that it will simply be the inner "digipak" (cardboard fold-out disc case) that is currently inside the larger "Cylon Head" version. One certain bet is that it WILL be smaller, and easier to store with the rest of your DVD collection.

A casualty of this changeover COULD be the 9.5 inch by 8 inch, 20-page "Collector's Book" that comes with the current packaging. Full of publicity photos & an episode guide, it's way too large to fit in the standard DVD cases (which are typically around 5.25" x 7.5"). Perhaps it will be shrunk down to fit, modified in some way, or removed all together. The packaging change is sure to increase the chances of the original version becoming a collectible item.

That's just great. I am satisfied with the quality of DVD on my tube. Now, unless I land the lottery and buy the highest resolution plasma display imaginable, then I'll stick to DVD. [face_laugh]

Of course film companies will have to support the EVD format for them to be a big success. WB was the first to support DVDs and after the other companies saw the potential for the format they put their support behind it.

New re-releases of the Police Academy series with the extras they deserve will be headed our way. From dvdreview.com:

All 7 Police Academy movies are getting touched up in time for the 20th anniversary of the original film by Warner Brothers Home Video.
The first film has been restored and is available with an audio commentary by Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, G.W. Bailey, director Hugh Wilson and producer Paul Maslansky, the new documentary Behind Academy Doors: Secret Files Revealed and a theatrical trailer. Each additional title will include along with the film a new featurette and a theatrical trailer.
The sequel's are each priced (MSRP) at $14.97; the first film is priced at $19.97. A box set will also be available for $59.92. All will be available on April 13th.

Anyone see the new DarkCrystal set for less then $40 bucks. I want to pick up this but can't see paying that much for a film frame and mock up Jim Henson note pad.

A new possibility arises to see your favorite classic TV shows on DVD. From tvshowsondvd.com:

TV Guide Publishing Group Inc...announced today it signed a new licensing deal with Falcon Picture Group, bringing its powerful brand and expertise in on-screen entertainment to the fast-growing genre of TV shows on DVD.

Through its exclusive distribution agreement with Genius Products (OTCBB:GNPI), Falcon Picture Group is developing the first collection of 12 TV Guide brand DVDs, which will include "digitally remastered" classic television programming featuring The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, The Milton Berle Show, The Burns & Allen Show, You Bet Your Life, The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, The Red Skelton Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza and others. TV Guide brand DVDs will also feature famous Christmas episodes from a variety of series; Unaired Pilot episodes from series including The Munsters, Sea Hunt and others; the best in Sci-Fi & Western programming; and others to be determined. Genius Products will work with major retail outlets to distribute the first collection of 12 DVDs to retail stores in September 2004.

The DVDs will also contain an enormous amount of "Value Added Material" including TV Guide crossword puzzles, trivia questions, nostalgic advertisements, related feature articles from the magazine and commentary from TV Guide Magazine's Editorial team.

"Each DVD collection will contain two disks with six television programs on each disk -- a total of 12 classic television programs in each collection with a suggested retail of $9.99. We plan to bring the line to retail in September in time for holiday gift-giving," said Mike Meader, president of Genius Products. "At a retail of under 10 dollars for 12 television programs -- six hours of programming -- we expect this to be a huge success. Future TV Guide collections will include The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, The Jack Benny Program, The Cisco Kid, One Step Beyond, Gangbusters and many, many others."

The TV Guide DVDs will be sold via major retail outlets and will be promoted in TV Guide magazine and at www.tvguide.com. TV Guide DVDs will also be sold through the TV Guide Store (http://shop.tvguide.com).

This could be a really great thing. As most TV-on-DVD fans know, public domain episodes from the shows named are already available from countless companies (Alpha, BCI Eclipse, Catcom, Delta, Eclectic, Front Row, Goodtimes, Koch, Madacy, etc.), and at low price points.

But Falcon and TV Guide are taking a different approach, bringing us the episodes at a similar under-$10 price point, but with all of the unique content that only TV Guide has to offer, and packaged in a way TV fans can trust. We're sure, with this approach, that these releases will reflect both the insight & value that has always been associated with the TV Guide name.

The long wait will soon be over to see the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett... today news was released about the upcoming release of Quantum Leap on DVD! And to think I was surprised to find the Pilot Episode (the only show ever released as a DVD) at CD Warehouse on Friday for a good price and was going to surpise GM Mike with my find. From tvshowsondvd.com:

With the original DVD release of Quantum Leap - The Pilot Episode being long out-of-print, fans of the show have longed for Universal Home Entertainment to bring the beloved series back to DVD in season sets.

We knew something was in-the-works last November, when reports surfaced that Deborah Pratt - who was heavily involved in the show - had mentioned in an interview that she was called in to do some work on the new home video version.

Now the waiting is over, and the countdown to the street date begins. This morning, Universal Home Video announced that Quantum Leap - Season 1 will make the leap home on June 8th. The nine hours of programming that made up the rookie season - including the pilot episode "Genesis" from the out-of-print item - will arrive on 2 dual-sided DVDs, at a $59.98 SRP.

Right now details are thin, with no details on the specs, no extras mentioned so far (though we're sure there will be some, since Ms. Pratt participated on the release), and no cover art to show you yet. Still, it's great to know that Sam, Al, and Ziggy will be coming back home this summer, in one of the most-requested releases here at the site (in the top 10!).

Also news arrived today of Northern Exposure from the same source:

Northern Exposure - The Complete 1st Season will arrive on DVD this May 25th.

The series premiered with a short 8-episode run in the Summer of 1990, an hour long "dramedy" about a Jewish doctor (played by Rob Morrow) who's deal to get paid up for medical school meant he had to go where he was assigned...in Alaska, since the state was the source of the money. Dr. Joel Fleischman is assigned in the end to Cicely, Alaska, a town full of strange but lovable characters including former astronaut Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin), a radio D.J. ("Chris in the Morning", played by John Corbett) with a strange outlook on life, Ed Chigliak (Darren Burrows )...and Maggie O'Connell, of course, played by co-star Janine Turner.

Universal Home Video announced the DVD release of the debut season this morning, on a 2-disc (double-sided "DVD-14") set running at 384 minutes. List price is $59.98 for this set, which comes in a special limited-edition "Parka" packaging that is sure to be a collectible item. 4x3 video and English Dolby Surround Sound represent the original over-the-air presentation of this show, and on the DVD you also get French and Spanish subtitles to choose from. The discs are closed captioned for the hearing impaired, too.

With such a short season, Universal didn't want to disappoint the fans with too short a DVD release, so they are adding some nice bonus material to this box set. Look for these extras:
    Deleted Scenes
    Video Documentary Footage
    Mock Movie Footage
    "Unexposed" Footage

Warner Home Video will release a special edition disc of George Lucas's futuristic classic later this year that's rated R and entitled "THX - 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut".

"Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB," the 1967 USC student film that inspired the feature film, is already available on the Short 10: Chaos DVD series (see Amazon for this disc). The disc includes the film, an interview with Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola on the history of "THX" and bonus interviews with USC professors on Lucas' life as a student filmmaker.

No news currently on The Paper (1994).

On a side note, anyone think the LOTR Extended Edition will feature a new stamping to commemorate their record-setting 11 Academy Awards (congrats Peter Jackson & company!) ? I noticed that the earlier Extended Editions made no mentions of previous Oscars, but that the theatrical DVDs did at least note the wins on the back.

One news report suggested that Mel Gibson may not release "The Passion of the Christ" on DVD and may just re-release it in theaters every Easter. I couldn't imagine this being a good idea for more than a couple of years. Especially with the price of movie tickets climbing ever higher.

News has surfaced on The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones and the full specs are out for the upcoming release of Quantum Leap. From tvshowsondvd.com:

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones
Our newest update comes to us via the Akron Beacon Journal, whose article last Sunday - "Lucas series inches to DVD", by R.D. Heldenfels - notes that a celebrated staffer at their local University is taking part in the creation of the DVD release, and was brought out to the Skywalker Ranch to do just that.

You see, in the Video Business article we first linked to in our original Young Indy Jones news, it was explained about the plans to turn the release into an educational affair, along with all the entertainment of course, by providing extras for every episode that ties it into the history which was woven into the fictional "Indy" story. According to LucasFilm honcho Rick McCallum, "what we're going to try to do is produce historical documentaries about each of the historical characters." Now we have the details of Dave Baker's adventure in consulting on one of these documentaries:

...it was good to hear that University of Akron archivist Dave Baker was involved in a DVD release of the Chronicles. Director of the university's Archives of the History of American Psychology, Baker said he was contacted awhile back by Lucas' people looking for material for a documentary on psychology.

Baker talked with them about the differences between psychology and psychiatry. ("Psychologists are concerned with the human condition in the broad sense," he said. "Psychiatrists are physicians first, concerned with the treatment of mental illness.") He also talked about the development of psychology between the world wars.

"The thing I appreciated was that I was able to have some input," he said. "I'm a very passionate historian of psychology." And apparently an impressive one. Baker was flown out to Lucas' Skywalker Ranch facility for an interview to be included in the documentary. Which turned out to be a companion piece for the DVD release of a Chronicles episode featuring Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

Baker did not really know the series. "I had seen it once and it was a long time ago," he said. Nor was he sure when the DVD will come out. Baker guessed it will be tied to the release of the fourth big-screen Indiana Jones, which had been expected in 2005 until reports of Lucas' dissatisfaction with the original script.

"I didn't see that they had a hard and fast marketing plan," Baker said. "It's a very ambitious project. It looks like they're doing something like 50 or 100 of these documentaries."

    Quantum Leap
Universal recently posted these, and so we decided to post them here:

2 "DVD-14" discs (double sided, dual-layer on one side and single-layer on the other)
Disc 1: 3 Hours 9 Minutes run time
Disc 2: 3 Hours 58 Minutes run time
Video: Full Frame 1.33:1 (as broadcast)

I just stumbled on this while doing a word search for "Van Helsing" on Amazon.com. Its the Monster Legacy Collection that is coming to DVD on April 27th, most likely to coincide with the new movie Van Helsing premiering on May 7th. It includes 13 of the classic B&W monster movies of Dracula (Bela Lugosi), Frankenstein (Boris Karloff), & the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.) on 6 DVDs for only $56!

The movies included in this are:

Dracula - The Legacy Collection (Dracula / Dracula (1931 Spanish Version) / Dracula's Daughter / Son of Dracula / House of Dracula) (1931) (1931)

The Wolf Man - The Legacy Collection (The Wolf Man / Werewolf of London / Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man / She-Wolf of London) (1941)

Frankenstein - The Legacy Collection (Frankenstein / Bride of / Son of / Ghost of / House of) (1931)

The DVD set also comes with 3 mini busts of Dracula, Frankenstein & the Wolfman. If you are a fan of the classic monster movies like I am, I think you will find this to be a steal.

This 4 disc set will contain all 22 episodes from the first season on 3 DVD-18s (2 sides, 2 layers) and 1 DVD-5 (1 side, 1 layer) (4 discs total). Suggested Retail Price will be $59.98 and will contain a full frame (1.33:1) picture, English Mono soundtrack and English, French and Spanish subtitles. Universal only lists 1 piece of bonus material - "Knight Rider 2000" - but we know there will be more.

Along with Knight Rider, Universal has announced the long-awaited release of Sliders for release. This show was first mentioned in a Video Business article we reported on back in August, 2002. This 6 disc set will contain the 23 episodes that make up the first and second seasons of the series and will be released on August 3rd, the same day as Knight Rider. Details about the set are slim right now, but we can tell you it will be a 6 disc set will Full Frame (1.33:1) video. The SRP for the set is $89.98, $30 higher than most of the other season sets we've seen released by Universal.

    More to come...

    ALSO:
Underworld 2 starring Kate Beckinsale & Scott Speedman to start filming Fall 2004, but it didn't state when the movie would release:

"*This time we can expect more history about the vampires and the werewolves, which we weren't able to do in the first one. There's going to be a bit of actual battle in the medieval times between the werewolves and vampires, with like army-clad vampires on horses, kinda like "Braveheart". It'll play out a bit like "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" where the first ten to fifteen minutes of the film will be a prequel. We're going to really dive into the dark ages, and then centre some more on the modern day. We will have a lot of the same cast, but also new cast too. It's in early development, so of course we have no idea whom, but yeah, some new people will be involved. Marcus (who we saw at the end of Underworld 1) of course will be back."
