    Star Trek Online is set 30 years after Nemesis (22 after the destruction of Romulus), so given the rate at which Enterprises are seemingly retired/destroyed, it stands to reason that they'd be on the F or G by then. The possible Enterprise-J is from the 26th century, so that span would also seem to track (with G, H & I filling out the difference).

    Oh, it's for the computer game. OK. That makes slightly more sense.
    Sadly that game suffers from MMO grind.

    Fortunately, I didn't have to buy it myself to find out.

    Sadly, I understand there are people who think DS9 was the best of the modern Trek shows...
    Maybe that's what started the trend to the Emo BSG?

    Netflix just added the entire series on instant watch. Finally, I can watch TNG from start to finish.

    In a news conference, Paramount (whatever they call themselves these days) spokesman said they intended to get all the episodes of ALL the trek series onto instant streaming/viewing/whatever by the end of the year.
    TOS will be the CGI enhanced version.

    Question: one of the TOS eps was actually LONGER in syndication than it was on the "full uncut" versions released on factory VHS. So, is the new CGI+ version the syndicated episode, or the "uncut" shorter version?

    Wow, every episode of Next Generation, Voyager and the Original Series is up on streaming. Gotta sign up for Netflix now. I'm only slightly worried that they'll take them down someday, but that sounds like a really good deal for right now at least.

    Looks like Paramount is close to announcing the first TNG HD Blu-Ray sampler set that will probably be hitting around xmas. It's supposedly going to include Farpoint, Inner Light and Sins of the Father.

    Should be interesting to see the finished product, since they'll have had to reconstruct each episode from scratch due to the film-to-video conversion done originally.

    Seriously...do people really want HD versions of stuff from archaic and terrible sources?

    STAR WARS slappies who are gonna rush out for Bluray boxsets are no smarter, regardless of what mutation GL has shaped up for this go round.

    All this does is reinforce the age...enjoy it as it was...it's like an old woman getting face-lift after face-lift...it's never going to look as magical as you dream it could...and before long, it's either unrecognizable or a scarring horror for the eyes to behold.

    Well, the shows were shot on film- the problem is they were transferred to to video for editing and FX compositing.

    So, they're going to rescan the film for the HD transfers and reassemble the episodes to match the edits, then as sthe new FX (presumably).

    The expense is why they're not doing season sets and just samplers for the time being.

    End product should look at least as good as the Enterprise stock footage flybys that were recycled in Generations, if not better.

    Well, since i already own all six series and eleven movies on DVD and don't own a Blu-Ray player, pass on any BR releases.

    It's main benefit is for HD viewing, though even ignoring updated effects, if they are going back to 35mm masters, the resulting change in the look of the show overall should be an incredible difference that would be noticable even in standard definition.

    It probably will look more like Generations, minus the "Yesterday's Enterprise" set lighting scheme.

    Good news! It'll just be the one sampler, followed by the full Season 1 (I'm quite pleasantly surprised).

    Trailer!

    Star Trek TNG Blu Rays Launch in 2012

    You've heard the rumors, and now StarTrek.com can officially confirm it: Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that. Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation's seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world. Star Trek: The Next Generation will, as fans know, be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012.

    ?Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of Star Trek: The Next Generation," Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. ?Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can?t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.?

    CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.

    As for that sampler, it will be called Star Trek: The Next Generation -- The Next Level. CBS Home Entertainment has set a January 31, 2012, release date for the single disc, which will include the feature-length version of the series pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," as well the fan-favorite episodes "Sins of the Father" and "The Inner Light," the former from season three and the latter from season five. The Next Level will sell for the suggested retail price of $21.99.

    Also, compare the ship shot in that trailer to this one.

    As one example, :57 seconds into the trailer, you're at the same shot 1:28 in on the original intro, and there's clearly more visual info on both sides.

    This site has detailed the aspect ratio TNJG's live action footage was filmed in, by comparing it to footage that was recycled for the last episode of Enterprise (where footage of Ten Forward was rescanned from "Menage a Troi"'s original negatives).

    In these pics you can see that there actually was extra information shot on the sides of the frame (done so to counter any overscan on a TV set), though there was some vertical cropping done to match Enterprise's aspect ratio:

    So, Trek Movie and Digital Bits are confirming the blu rays will have the original :133 aspect ratio, but that 1:78 versions may be created for some venues (presumably TV/streaming).

    However, some nice comparison shots here:

    [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tng-comparison-2.jpg] [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tng-comparison.jpg]

    And some lovely HD shots of the ship as a whole:

    [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tnghd-ent2.jpg] [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tnghd-ent3.jpg] [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tnghd-ent4.jpg] [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tnghd-ent1.jpg]

    By comparison in SD:

    [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/openingcredits/season1/season1_066.jpg] [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/openingcredits/season1/season1_068.jpg]

    Of course there's also a comparison with the Picard shot:

    [image=http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/tng-comparison-3.jpg]

    But, outside of the added detail...am I the only one who thinks the SD image looks better, color-wise? HD looks like the brightness settings are too high. But, that could just be from the trailer's effects.

    "Desaturated" I think is the word. Look at the blacks and skin tone. A big step down.

    On the other hand, the TOS was super-saturated for its Hi-Def release. Checkov's hair looks like copper wire!

    Well, if they bothered to put TOS on Blu-ray, not surprised they're doing it with TNG. They're not going to bother re-broadcasting "re-mastered" editions, are they? I think Syfy has the current TNG license, but its been a while so it could expire whenever. Just too bad the first few seasons of TNG weren't that great, to be honest. There were a few decent ones, but it was usually around the third season that they really started hitting their stride. The uniform change also helped a lot too of course.

    Well, the surprise with TNG is the extensive process of reassembling every episode from scratch to match the video masters being applied to the entire series.

    Apparently this was only possible due to a Netflix deal helping to bank the process, which presumably will give them the rights to stream the remastered episodes (which might explain the statement that 1:78 widescreen versions may be released "for certain markets").

    Ok, so I bought TNG Season 1 on DVD on Saturday and I have a question. I've noticed that the episodes are all numbered, but that some of numbers are out of order. Are the episodes being presented in some sort of preferred viewing order, or perhaps in the order in which they were shot, as opposed to the order in which they were aired?

    There's probably air-date order and production order. For example, Tasha Yar waves goodbye at the end of one episode that was filmed after her character was killed (spoiler?), but aired before her character's death.

    So is it worth my time to start shuffling disks around, or should I watch the episodes in the order presented?

    AFAIK you shouldn't have to worry about shuffling discs around- especially given TNG's more episodic nature.

    Voyager is the only series that needs some shuffling in it's first 1.5 seasons, and there might be 1 or 2 DS9 episodes that got swapped around but don't affect the story.
