The flack that Dalton took was unfair, but I also dont understand the flack that Moore is taking in this thread.

It's simple, really. Sourdust and I are Bond Purists.

Roger Moore + James Bond Purists = Negative Attention.

    :)

Hey, does anyone know how many Bond novels Fleming wrote? I've never read any of them and I would like to check them out.

I think it was around 13.

If you're going to read them, start with Casino Royale and work your way through them.

And make sure you read OHMSS.

Hey, no problem. I love talking about Bond and I'm glad to help.

The one thing in the novels you should read is in Diamonds Are Forever. There, it is stated that Bond liked sex akin to rape!

Not cool, not then not now not ever. [face_plain]

Just saw OHMSS again on TNN yesterday, and I got me thinking again that if Connery had been Bond again instead of Lazenby for that one, it would really have been his best. If the public could have seen Bond played by the person that best embodied him saying "I love you" to a woman and actually wanting to marry her, it would have been a huge deal

I don't know, I can't picture Sean in that movie.... If Sean Connery tried to make me think he was a geneaologist bookworm, there's no way I'd believe it!

As for the books, I'd agree with E_S and recommend Casino Royale. It's so low-key you won't believe it's Bond. Very, very noir. I can picture it as a graphic novel or something.

Not only would I make sure to read OHMSS, but I'd read Thunderball-OHMSS-You Only Live Twice-The Man with the Golden Gun. It's a series. Each one more insane than the last!

Also, Moonraker, Doctor No, and the short stories are all great.

Thanks, E_S, for the info on Dalton. I wasn't sure why he didn't do Goldeneye.

I was watching OHMSS on TNN on Sunday, it was the first time in a long time that I've seen it. That movie definitely has THE saddest ending in the whole Bond movie series(of course, it was following what happens in the novel). It really got to me. That image of the bullet hole in the windshield during the end credits was ingrained in my mind for hours after I watched it.

BTW, does anyone know why Connery wasn't in OHMSS? Was he too busy to do it?

I believe Connery didn't want to continue after doing five films. He had had enough. Then...he changed his mind and returned for Diamonds in 1971. (Then later in Warner Bros.'s NSNA, but that's a different story.)

That's why Twice was so big: Bond "turned" Japanese, supposedly got married, and finally confronted Blofeld. It was supposed to be Connery's final Bond.

They were supposed to make OHMSS right after Thunderball, but they couldn't film it in Switzerland during the season when the weather was right because of scheduling, so they made YOLT, which Fleming had written after OHMSS.

    A couple questions about NSNA:

    1. I know that MGM bought the rights for it after Warner Bros. released it, but why was it made by WB in the first place?

    2. Why weren't Broccoli and EON involved in it?

Interesting note: Both NSNA(Sean Connery) and Octopussy(Roger Moore) were released in 1983, thus making them box office rivals.

A guy called Kevin McClory owned the rights to Thunderball, and can therefore remake it as often as he likes. You'll note, NSNA has the same plot as Thunderball. (Then again, TSWLM has the same plot as YOLT, and AVTAK has the same plot as Goldfinger...!)

This is because he co-wrote the story with Fleming. I think he has the rights to SPECTRE and Blofeld too, which is why you never (officially) saw them again after DAF.

I can't see Connery doing OHMSS. He wouldn't have cried at the end.

Re: NSNA - Sourdust nail it all. McClory was going to remake it as Warhead 2000 in, duh, 2000 with Dalton as 007 ( :D ) and Connery as the villain ( :D :D ).

    It never happened though. :_|

I'm bored here at work, so I'm gonna rank all the Bonds.

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Licence to Kill
    The Living Daylights
    From Russia With Love
    For Your Eyes Only
    Doctor No
    Goldfinger
    Thunderball
    Octopussy
    The World is Not Enough
    Goldeneye
    The Spy Who Loved Me
    You Only Live Twice
    A View to a Kill
    Live and Let Die
The Man With the Golden Gun
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Moonraker
    Diamonds Are Forever
    Die Another Day

I know, View is too high, and what's a Connery Bond doing second to last? I stand by this though. Patrick Macnee and Christopher Walken in one movie can make up for any other shortcomings.

EDIT: Oh man, Dalton v. Connery? That would be absolutely fantastic! Though it'd be pretty darn weird to see Connery die in a Bond movie....

Who's everyone's pick for the next Bond?

The favoured contender at EON is Clive Owen, who just so happens to be my favourite too! :D

The list has included a bunch of names, who do you like?

I'll side with you and say Clive. I wouldn't mind Ewan, except that he plays humor so well, it would be exploited, Moore-style.

And Timothy Dalton's not too old. How bout him? :D

I'd like to see Hugh Jackman as Bond.

Jackman would be good, but he doesn't match enough of the essential character descriptions - not as bad as Moore, who looked nothing like Fleming's character, but still not enough to make me convinced.

Bond has cold, grey eyes, a cruel mouth, a scar on his left cheek and thick black hair which falls in a comma across his right eye. There's enough there to work with, right? ;)

What about voice? While I like Owen, I think his voice is a little weaker than one thinks of when thinking of James Bond.

Then again, Brosnan has whispered and grunted his way through four movies now....

Now where do you get word the EON has Owen on a short list to follow Brosnan? Seems like they want one or two more out of Pierce.

What about who's going to DIRECT the next one? I think that's even more important. I just don't want an ex-music video director who's going to ripoff The Matrix and other blockbusters.

The rumor going around that it may be Die Another Day director Lee Tamahori or GoldenEye director Martin Campbell. I think it's a good idea to bring a director back to do more movies like in the old days with Terence Young, Guy Hamilton, Lewis Gilbert, and John Glenn. I would really like Michael Apted, director of The World Is Not Enough, to come back for Bond 21.
