    So, sorry to bump this old thread, but I am trying to get a green Mara Jade costume together, and I was wondering - that brooch she's wearing - any idea where to find that?

    I wouldn't have the foggiest. Chances are extremely slim that you'd stumble across one that looks close to it just by chance. But you could always replicate it with something like Sculpey and attach a pin back to it. IIRC, it's just a round shape with a smaller inner circle, right? Should be fairly easy to punch out a circle shape, like making cookies. I can't remember if it's also green-colored to match her tunic or metal color. Either way, Sculpey has silver and may have a dark green clay too. Or you could use PMC, precious metal clay.

    On another note, my MJ is slowly improving. I never meant it to be a big serious costume, but the bug bit me and I felt like at least completing the leather parts properly. Besides, there's an Emperor in my fanforce, so what the heck. :p

    My local RL base will have a leather workshop later on, but since there was a fairly major con coming up (I-CON a couple weeks ago) I felt kinda naked and decided to jury-rig some accessories as temporary substitutes. I wound up butchering two men's belts with web belt buckles stuck on and, of all things, a jailer's key ring from a $.99 store to hold everything together for the shoulder harness. o_O I found some nifty goggles at an army surplus store, and slapped the hood together out of a pattern I fudged up myself after much trial and error--without even sewing it! I had no time. The morning of the con I glued it together in the hotel room. [face_laugh]

    The belts for the harness refused to close around the ring no matter what I used (I didn't have access to leather tools and rivets or snaps, this was all done 24-48 hours pre-con). In the end I used plain old clear packaging tape. To cover up that eyesore I stuck on some masking tape and painted it brown. That part wound up being covered by my wig and the hood anyway. [face_whistling] For all that effort I got a nice slice across the top of my left thumb. :oops:

    Basically, everything held together and did pretty well considering I wore it for a whole day. It's all still in one piece afterwards. At least they'll be good prototypes for the final products.

    A friend took a really good shot of me, luckily:

    [image=http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g298/DarynSilver4/I-Con%2025/IMG_4738.jpg]

    And here's one where I'm holding my nifty new converted MR FX Luke ESB saber with 3 watt Luxeon LED and removable blade (geek moment :-B ):

    [image=http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/pariah925/P1010012.jpg]

    Yeah, my MJ's a jumble of references and totally not "canon" but that was never my intent anyway. My suit's not even PVC/vinyl/whatever, it's just a cotton/lycra dance suit. I just wanted something (fairly) comfortable and a second option from ANH Leia.

    Ok, enough of my rambling. :p

    What green outfit are you referring to? I, for one, do not know that one, or at least I don't remember it at the moment. Do you have any pics of it?

    Sorry to butt in again, but since I know where to find pics of what she's talking about easily, I figure I might as well chip in... [face_blush]

    This is the one she's talking about, in all it's various depictions:

    Ok, so now that I've seen those, I guess the brooch could go several colors. In some it looks metallic silver, some almost black, and some bronze-ish.

    Ok, now I know what you're talking about.

    I don't particularly like the last 2 pics. The one with Shannon McRandle makes her look too much like
    Peter Pan, in my opinion. :p

    I'd say go with Sculpy, but make it in the same color as the shoulder things(i have no idea what you would call them.. armor maybe?)

    Yeah, it looks like armor of some kind. A piece of armor worn on the shoulder is called a "pauldron". ;)

    I've been meaning to ask this.

    Say someone who isnt exactly the size of a model, or a slimmer size i should say, wants to be Mara... do ya think it's do-able? cuz a friend of mine was thinking about making one.. and we werent 100% sure whether people would say something or not

    I say your friend should go for it then. It doesn't matter what size you are. All that matters is that you enjoy the costume and feel great portraying the character. And if she's in character, we all know Mara would come up with some wonderful retorts for anyone rude enough to make unwanted comments.

    If she is doing the black leather costume, tell her to be prepared for the inevitable "leather" comments :rolleyes: I actually had a guy ask me to pose with his brother (which I was happy to do of course) and then asked me to say "leather" instead of "cheese" when he took the photo.

    She's female and in leather. She'll have fan boys following her. Trust me.

    There's something about the black leather that draws attention. When I went to Wizard World Chicago last year, I got more attention in the black leather Mara than in the almost naked Arica costume. LOL.

    Bleh, I've always wanted to make the black leather costume, but I don't know where to find leather at. [face_thinking] My local Joann's doesn't carry a huge variety of fabrics, and I haven't found a Hancocks just yet. Also I'm a little skeptical about getting fabrics online, because you can't feel them and see how they look in different lights.

    And I can never find a good pattern for things like this. [face_blush] :p

    Anyone got some suggestions? Any great places online for patterns and fabric? :p

    Cern: Pix? [face_laugh] Okay. But I was over-exaggerating a bit:
    Its this costume that I'm talking about:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/Jade-Walker/Wizard%20World/arica3.jpg]
    And here's my rendition of it:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/Jade-Walker/Wizard%20World/WW2.jpg]
    Oh! and this is me and my friend, who also did the Arica costume, but the Comic version:
    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/Jade-Walker/Wizard%20World/WW3.jpg]

    Spacelady: Don't bother looking at JoAnns or Hancock. This time of year they don't carry anything worthwhile. Around Halloween, they carry some stretch pleather, but its the 2-way stuff. More stiff and not as forgiving. I did a Black Canary costume (the more recent version, not the strapless) in the 2-way and I MUCH prefer the 4-way stretch.
    The best and cheapest place I've found online to get good 4-way stretch pleather is from www.stretchhouse.com You can order samples from them (free!) from their site. And they have excellent customer service. The material is a bit pricey ($14/yd), but other places I've found are much more expensive! ($24/yd!)
    Don't bother looking for stretch PVC that isn't high-shine, though. I've never found any. :rolleyes: I wish I could.

    Pattern: I used a Kwik Sew pattern (can't remember the number right now) and modified it. Kwik sew is for dance costumes generally and has great catusuit patterns. You can get those at Hancock. But they NEVER go on sale. [face_plain]

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,
    I don't mean to butt in/hope you guys don't mind, but I was google searching Mara's costumes to look for what people did on the black costume and came across this thread.

    I did Mara's green costume for the Rebel Legion, so I figured I'd add some comments on what did and didn't work for me.

    For her brooch: I did black femo and spray-painted it silver to get a nice two color tone (I made about 5 of these darn things before settling on one I liked) The biggest problem I have now is the silver sometimes comes off on my dress.

    For her shoulder pads: I used brown leather. I thought the ones they put on Shannon were really ugly. (and fortunately, the RL is a little more lenient than the 501st as to what you can use for your base img) The book cover of "Visions of the Future" looked metal, but I didn't have the tools.

    My costume has a lot of problems, and I've been working on upgrading it, but I figured I should still offer my 2 cents.

    For those that want to take a look, here's my original costume, mistakes and all. I've changed it a bit since then Original attempt Unfortunately, I don't have any good pics with the new shoudler pads or brooch, but this is the best I can find: side view

    Seeing what some of you have done, you guys could do a better job than I did :)

    Spacelady: Kwik sew is the way to go. There's two they have that are workable with only a few changes,
    one is pattern 3273
    (hope this works)
    [image=http://www.kwiksew.com/Patterns/P3258_3277/3273.jpg]

    the other is pattern 2722
    [image=http://www.kwiksew.com/Patterns/P2702_2723/2722.GIF]

    there is even pattern 3052

    I went to a halloween party one year as Mara Jade -- I wore all black, got some high heeled boots that have some embelishments, and I had a sliver cape. It wasn't at all 'Mara Jade' but I fell in love with her and that was what I told people, well, if they took notice! *lol*

    so i posted a short while back while i was still making my Mara Jade costume. I'd like to thank everyone for their imput and help. i had a full completion of the costume in April so i thought i'd share my results. here are some pics:

    [image=http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g298/DarynSilver4/I-Con%2025/IMG_4740.jpg]

    [image=http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g298/DarynSilver4/I-Con%2025/IMG_4765.jpg]

    [image=http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g298/DarynSilver4/I-Con%2025/IMG_4775.jpg]

    [image=http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g298/DarynSilver4/I-Con%2025/IMG_4792.jpg]

    the shin guards are missing in these. i'd been wearing them all day and they were starting to get uncomfortable, so i took them off for the masquerade. Also, the belt piece kept fallingoff and i didnt bother putting it back on after a certain point in the day.

    You're in my Area Burnt, you should try Fabric Hut in norfolk. My friend Jane bought the last of it a few months back but they said they sould be getting more in (I havent been back since then). But it was a nice black vinyl, but not the wet-look kind. They are a bit more pricey than other fabric stores, but since you dont have to pay shipping, its prolly the same price as you would end up paying if you found it online. They are also alot bigger than the other stores around. If you need directions or any info on them, pm me here or on the TA website.
