Okay. I'm pretty familiar with 3D animations and how they work, I just lack experience and knowledge of 3DS Max. So, from what you wrote I assume I just click on the Hierarchy tab in the right-hand menu and work from there. Thanks for the help again. It is much appreciated.

No, hierarchy is just a term used to describe that objects are linked to each other in a chain. When you try to create the bones it will have them linked to each other in the order you make them, so each bone is linked to the bone before it. If you have to stop, like for instance if you started with the torso and went down to the legs and you want to do the arms, you'll have to link the new arm bones to the torso.

I think you may be lost, look in the User Reference help of 3ds Max.

First of all, I apologize for the double-post.

I trying to add bones to the model for a day or two, and have been unable to make progress.

Do you by any chance have a model with the bones in it already? If so, my e-mail is nepmarauder@yahoo.com. It would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

I'm not going to just give you the answer, you need to learn it for yourself. And besides, not all bone rigs work with each other. If you can't use bones then use Biped, if you can't somehow learn how to do that then you are in over your head and you should try something more simple because you don't know what you're doing. The User Reference help is extremely helpful, for instance, try searching for Bones, or Biped, really it's that easy.

Okay. :) I guess I'll have to do some reading then. I usually not one to ask for this kind of help. This time though, I didn't want to waste too much time. I appreciate your references, and in a way I thank you for not giving me the immediate answer.

Once again, sorry about the double-post.

I worked on the Rancor model Friday night. I read an extensive amount of material about 3DS MAX 9 and I feel that I have a decent understanding of it now.

I decided to make my own biped to reassure my understanding of the system. So, I created my biped (which as you know takes a while to get right) and applied Modify>Physique. After that I easily created an animation.

Now, I have two other models from Sci-Fi 3D that I would like to use (Admiral Ackbar and Stormtrooper 3). But, for these models I do not want to create the biped myself, rather I would like to utilize the already created biped points. Now, when I load the .3ds file of either model, I get green biped points (no biped model). And, when I attempt to apply Physique and a footstep animation, it fails. How, if possible, can I utilize these points to create a footstep animation for both?

Open the .max versions instead. The .3ds files are only for importing into other 3D programs, although it's not as good as other formats. The .max versions will probably already have a Biped fitted and applied.

You might also want to take a look at using the Skin modifier instead of Physique, it gives you more control.

Well, its kind of funny that you told me to use the .max versions. I tried them the other night and I couldn't get them to work right. Then I tried them again tonight and they worked terrifically. Thanks for your suggestions and for your help with these problems of mine.

There aren't going to be any tutorials exactly for that. And I don't really know what you're asking anyway. Do you mean how do you get the angled sides while th top (at the tower) is flat?

well, if you look at the side view, it is straight, then angles upwards and downwards...
but if you look at perspective, the it shows no deformations. the top of the ship is flat...no upwards..
    its hard to explain

whats wrong with the one I posted?
    http://www.scifi3d.com/images/wip/2397_src_venator3_6.jpg

cant you see that the front is straight, then goes up and down?
then the real model you cant even tell that it is angled...

    try this..

    Oh, ok I understand.

It goes up and down because the top and bottom hull surfaces are slanted, the hangar part is closer into the ship (the indenent in the sides) and so the trench part with the hangar has to be taller in that area

Have you tried some tutorials for some beginner stuff?

In Maya you basically start with a cube or something and just move vertices and such and use the split polygon tool until you have shapes that you want (very basic concept there but I can't really write a tutorial).

For something like that it wouldn't really be that difficult. Perhaps you should just try some tutorials before trying to do something like that.

Your stuff is pretty good, are you just having trouble copying something else that someone else has done or are you really having trouble understanding how to make the shapes?

I've never tried doing a ship like a Star Destroyer, perhaps you should email other people that have done Star Destroyers and stuff and see what steps they took to model them.
