Padme Amidala Padmé's "Sleepless Knights" gown

That is a great idea for the heirloom stitching. I know it is a bit cold out there to be wearing it around. I also had thought about the hook and eye thing. I hate doing the zipper thing too.

 

I started this gown this week and things are going okay. I will put pictures up, if I can figure out how, when I finish. I am a big girl, I admit it, and I added a couple of gathers in the back just to give it a different look. Plus I added a bit more of a sweep in the back. I kinda wanted to personalize the whole thing. I just didn't want to look like a big girl in a potato sack and all.
I hope to finish next week and have pictures up very soon.

The brooch turned out a litte darker then we expected, I might leave it or I might spray paint it lighter. Does anyone have any feedback on that?

 

hm, the brooch looks pretty good to me, maybe spraying some sort of base coat on it then spraying/painting a lighter color over top of that?

I tried painting some stuff over top the silverish parts but it ended up rubbing off because I didn't seal it or use a good base or something.
I'm not sure what kind/color paint would be good for you to use though, as long as it sticks to the brooch I think it will be fine though.

 

Thanks for the tips, I think I'm leaning toward leaving it as is though.

 

I am crafting this brooch out of wire, then gluing the pearls on it. My hands hurt alot from the time from the bending and prodding. Now if I can find a low-cost(ie college student cheap digital camera), I will put up some pictures.

 

I opted to do mine out of wire too. The bending is a killer. Hope to see it soon.

 

panicing...sewing machine screwed and I have to get this done for a costume contest we are having at work, well my work is sponsoring it. AHHHH!!! Just needed to vent a bit.

HI I was directed over to this topic. A friend and I are doing this gown and we've already started on the broach and the pins on the back of the dress. We have everything bought. We're using the McCalls pattern. Anyway if you guys have any pointers I would love to have them. Thanks

 

I am also making the Sleepless Knight costume from the Mccalls pattern I am not making this to be a replica costume rather for it to be a very star wars theamed long dress for dances and such occasions but I have a question, What color are the pearls om the dress and where is a good place to get them?

 

I used white ones, but that was just my preference. I got them at Joanne's. They came so many yards for so much. So that is my story.

 

I'm using loose beads(pearls) that are white and I'm making the stands how tight I want them. I'm also having this dress made for my prom but I'm cutting out the pearls and using lil' beads.

Also, I meant to post this a while ago and have just been busy. Biba-Fett was kind enough to
describe the back of the gown to me. It's all hidden under the cloak, and I had no idea what was going on with it. So she described, and I sketched, and she corrected and we ended up with a good description and sketch of what the back looks like.

And boy is it wacky!

In this case, a picture is not worth a thousand words - so here are some words to go with it!

On the front of the nightgown, we can easily see that there are three thin straps on each side of center front (CF).

At the neck, the two inside straps on each side are sewn to a strap that goes around the back of the neck like a halter. It starts thin, maybe the width of the two straps sewn side by side - and ends up about 1" in thickness. It closes at the back of the neck with 3 hook and eyes.

The 3rd strap continues up and around to criss-cross at center back and attach with hooks to the back of the built-in bra under the dress, at around the princess line of the dress.

The cape attaches by hook and eyes near where the two thin straps attach. And at the center back (CB) of the cape, there are 2 clear snaps that attach to the CB of the neck halter strap, on either side of the opening.

But wait, there's more!

There are 2 straps that go from either side of the opening of the neck halter strap that go over the cross cross straps to either side of the CB zipper of the gown. At the middle section of these 2 straps there's a larger strap, maybe 1 1/2 inches long, made of 1/2 elastic, dyed to match the gown. It hooks onto the left strap. The elastic strap at CB has only 1 hook and it connects to 1 loop on the strap (the hook is as wide as the elastic and is used for bras). The 3 strings of pearls are individually attached to this elastic strap by rings sewn down. The rings go to ~2" lengths of silver chain, and then to the pearls.

Is that crazy or what? I guess it makes sense in some way, because those pearls and cape have to be supported by something.

Additionally, seam-wise, we can see the 5 seams on the front of the gown, all radiating out from where the brooch is. There are "side" seams as well, but they are not truly at the sides of the gown, they are placed further back than that, as you can see at left. There are no other seams on the back between that "side" seam and the center back zipper.

Great ! Now I have to start over. Just kidding. I'm really glad for the insight into the back. I might take the pearls off of mine and try something like that back to make the pearls a bit more stable.

 

I'm excited. I finally started work on the muslin for this (for my bridesmaid dresses). And I have a foggoting stitch on my sewing machine that I tried out on my muslin that makes a pretty fair approximation of the heirloom stitch on the gown. Yay!

 

for my prom .. i choose the lavendre dress but i don't know how make the brooch and the Japor .... i hope you can help me

It looks very pretty and I love the color I have yet to try the pattern to see how it differs or if I can modify it in anyway.
