Autumn 2008 Role Playing Forum Awards

Welcome to the Autumn 2008 RPF Awards!

Please be sure to review the entire post (even if you?ve done this before) to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Purpose of the Awards
Our role playing forums are very special ? unique in their quality and community. We come here to play, but also to work. It?s not easy to build a successful game or navigate through the galaxy with a character. It?s especially challenging now, with three distinct forums dedicated to different aspects of role playing. Many of you dedicate significant amounts of your free time to make this place the best it can be.

These awards have been established in recognition of the extraordinary efforts of you ? our users. The VIPships and publicity awarded to winners are meant to serve as both a reward for a job well done and a way to increase visibility. It is hoped that others will learn from their example, and that they will continue to serve as leaders of these role playing forums.

How it works
Awards are held four times per year, in April (Spring), July (Summer), October (Autumn) and January (Winter).

The four categories for awards are:

Best GM
Best Roleplayer
Best RPG (Star Wars and Non-Star Wars)
Best New RPG (Star Wars and Non-Star Wars)

New RPGs are defined as any active game less than three (3) months old and have over 100 posts at the time of nomination. RPGs must be active (no locked threads may be nominated).

Voting will consist of two rounds:

Round 1:
[ul][li]Lasts for five (5) days[/li]
[li]A time to nominate any active RPG or player[/li]
[li]Users may not nominate themselves for awards[/li]
[li]All users may make a total of two (2) nominations per category[/li][/ul]
Any RPG that wins an award becomes ineligible for next season's awards, to ensure fairness and variety. Any players who win awards will be ineligible until the next year.

Round 2
[ul][li]Begins immediately after the results of Round 1 are posted[/li]
[li]A list of all the nominees will be compiled for members to pursue[/li]
[li]You then have seven (7) days to PM your votes from the choices to the host[/li]
[li]Users have the option of voting for up to three (3) people in the Best RPer and best GM categories, and up to two (2) games in the Games categories[/li]
[li]Campaigning (ie, soliciting votes and/or nominations) at any time during the awards, in any thread, in any forum, is absolutely not allowed![/li][/ul]
The winners will be announced at the end of Round 2.
Prizes
As always, the part you've all been waiting for.

The winning GMs and Roleplayers will each be awarded VIPship (with the ability to choose custom colors) for one week. In addition, they will earn a place in the "RPF Hall of Fame" in the Community Centre. The winning RPGs will receive a special place in the introductory sticky thread, as well as the right to the title of "Best RPG," until the next season's winners are announced. Moderators are allowed to win Awards, but their prize will be limited to recognition alone. When a moderator places in the Best GM/RPer category, the top three contenders will be recognized, with the two non-mods getting colors. Two non-moderator users are guaranteed colors for every awards season.
The "RPF Stars" Awards

Winners of the RPF Stars Awards will not receive titles or colors, but they are encouraged to place their titles in their sig or bio. The idea behind these awards is to provide recognition for exemplary members of our community who stand out in interesting and innovative ways.

The RPF Stars Awards will be run similarly to the rest of the Awards ? that is to say, we will do stages for them like the normal awards. The ?nomination stage? is first. During this stage, users m

I was about to ask why no one was nominating any Non-Star Wars RPGs, but then I realized that there literally were almost no eligible games. Of the games active during the month of October, two are already disqualified for past victories, and leaving "Dawn of the Chosen One" and "GOONS", and only the first one is a new game (and already suffering from attrition). Opening the nominations up to cover games that have had a last post since August, we get "Way of the Ninja" and "Pokemon: Trainer", neither of which are new games, and with the Pokemon game amassing 168 posts in a year.

Truly, the NSWRPF is weak.

I've reopened the Rules Thread to talk about this. Lets have some discussion there on it.

Saint and myself will be making a decision on this based on the situation here and what is said on that thread within 24-48 hours. Please continue nominations. If the eventual decision restricts or alters your nominations in any way, Saint and myself will be happy to edit your choices.

Particularly once you acknowledge that it'd be a hollow victory. Frankly, I'd recommend not bothering with the NSWRPF - it doesn't count as a vote if there's only one candidate. Congratulations on running a successful NSWRP, MIB, and that certainly merits attention, but beyond that...

Yes, perhaps a Certificate of Merit, or an Honorary Award for running the only game that would be eligible in an otherwise struggling, slow forum. I'm not kidding when I say that's a noteworthy achievement, I just don't see the point of keeping it on the ballot.

Likewise if Dune ever gets made and people show up (witch they will) and the board is still slow I think we might need to re-word the awards thing entirley.

I suggest here and now just a plain best New RP caterogy and Best RP Catergoery if this slow down continues.

So... who here is eligible?

If I'm reading this correctly, the "next season" implies that the game is ineligible for the one immediately afterwards, but is good for the season after that one. Thus games that won in Spring 2008 are ineligible for Summer 2008, but are fair game in Autumn 2008. Thus the (dead) Galactic Senate game and the (still-going) Tide of Flames are back in action.

Also, the "next year" implies that any player/GM who wins is ineligible for the next three sessions? Since it's fall, anyone who's won last fall can be nominated again? Since Saintheart last won in Summer 2007, I think he's a valid candidate for not-winning.

Holy smokes people... I'm 1/2 inclined (and very well may) lock this thread and start all over again...

Light: You are correct. This is one consequence of my taking over NP's format. I assumed the game rules were the same as the player rules, an award a year. However, looking more carefully over how NP did it, it was indeed, once every other session. Also, in investigating this, it seems that prior Best-New Games were also on the do-not-nom list (something I did not do in past two awards). While this misinterpretation is highly annoying to me and I'm sure to everyone, this is just one of those unfortunate things about power transitions. Lesson learned.

So what I'm going to do now is that I'm going to leave my office, have some Chipotle, and think about what I want to do here. When I get home, I'll either make the necessary edits to this thread, or lock it and try this one more time, sans the 100 post-limit discussion, the illegal campaigning, and now these do-not-nom. errors. I shall also make the necessary bans/edits for rule-breakers and such.

In the Meanwhile: A hearty awards convo is going on in Rules Thread. If I'm going to re-post this anyway, anyone who wants new awards, new categories, category restructuring, and whatever else can say their peace there. While I'm disinclined to change anything at this moment and time, stunning delivered and well argued points may change my mind.

Big problems in the RPF, it seems. Not only is the NSWRPF weak, but the SWRPF is at it's slowest since I've been around.
