This arose on the SJRS thread in Fanfiction Writing Resource. Jedi_Lover wanted Mara to be on Jabba's sail barge.

That lunkhead Boba Fett took a very unlucky shot and hit the barge. It knocked Mara off her precarious perch above the action. She had to admit Skywalker was a great hand with that saber of his. How had he gotten so good? She slipped and her own shot went wide. In all the noise, it, and she, went unnoticed.

She wound up at Anchorhead eventually, got a ride offworld with some others fleeing after the aftermath of Jabba's demise. Many families felt liberated to leave and not come back to where they had had to eke out a living.

Unbeknownst to Mara, she had been knocked out for more hours than she realized. During that time, Luke and his friends had made their getaway. In the interim, the Emperor's conscious and unconscious grip on her mind started to ease. Mara didn't understand why she felt so light, so unburdened. When she puzzled it out, however, she realized his hold was dissipating. She decided to play the biggest deception of her life.

She returned to the Emperor and played the dutiful Hand. She was on Endor, "spying" on Luke and waiting her chance to take him out, seemingly. But when he returned victoriuos and the Emperor vanquished, she was really free.

She watched the celebrants from a discreet distance.

The Emperor's last command was nothing but a lingering tension headache.

Later, she joined the employ of Talon Karrde and became his second in command.

Authorly note: So, Mara doesn't have all the "baggage" from RoTj, etc. Luke has a subliminal memory of her on the barge and she has more than that. So, they meet on the Wild Karrde again, as they rescue him, but there is a different kind of tension between them.

Sound good? Shall I proceed?

 

Please continue. But I am wondering...if Mara didn't have an urge to kill Luke...would she be looking for him? And if she wasn't looking for him...did poor Luke die in deep space when his X-Wing burnt out and left him stranded? I guess Mara could have sensed a Force user calling out for Leia and decided to investigate. Then Karrde's crew could save him. Bow Chicka, chicka bow...then the tension starts. Mara has Luke captive on Myrkr. She must search for weapons...strip search!

In dealing with Thrawn, Luke was rescued by Mara, and the crew of the Wild Karrde. She had been having repressed memories come back, and they were bothering her. Karrde didn't like Thrawn or to be honest didn't trust him or the Empire, but he was reserving judgment until he saw how things fell out. Mara helped Luke escape when the coast was clear, and Luke promised to help her with her memories once they made their escape from the ysalamiri influence.

She didn't know why she trusted him, but she did.

He recalled seeing her on Jabba's sail barge but didn't mention it.

Mara wasn't sure how much of her Force skills were hers and which were accentuated by the Emperor.

Hers and Luke's paths kept crossing in the weeks to come. He helped her rescue Karrde and she saved his hide from C'Baoth. Luke reciprocated by rescuing her from the Katana fleet's fire zone.

She helped uncover a technological bug.

They took down Thrawn and the cloning tanks on Wayland, and Mara's confidence in her own true abilities grew.

Luke was true to his word and helped her untangle true from false memories.

Their friendship blossomed with respect and trust, augmented by no little attraction and empathy.

They didn't know if their paths lay together, but they knew they wanted them to.
