    Frak! It's the fraking twenty-eighth!

Okay, um, I guess I'll use this thread. If you are interested in guessing the Oscar winners, do so and send them to me via PM. The person who gets the most right will get colors for a week. You must guess in every category, not just the easy ones. Be sure to send them via PM. You may post them in this thread as well if you wish, but I'll only be counting the ones that come via PM as official entries! Sorry I didn't get this started sooner. It just takes so long to make a post like this one. [face_liarliar]

I wasn't planning on watching the Oscars this year because of the supreme joke of The Artist winning Best Picture over Hugo last year and Billy Crystal looking like at any moment he would double over and fall asleep. Then I watched 5 of the BP nominees. Then I found out that Seth MacFarlane is hosting. I guess I'll be watching the Oscars this year.

Sorry, it's the truth. I mean she's like Jake Lloyd bad. She doesn't even seem like a real person.

Rogue, can you maybe post a list of all the categories and noms so we make sure everyone submitting their Oscar guesses to you is submitting in all categories and such?

Okay, sent my picks in. But to be honest, this year I didn't look up anything to do with shorts or documentaries, so I just sort of picked randomly there :p I will say, the one prediction I would really like to see come true is Argo for Best Picture over Lincoln. They're both good, but Argo is far more unique and Affleck was completely shafted as he should have won Best Director.

EDIT: Oh, and Roger Deakins for Cinematography. He could probably win this award every year and it would be fair. Instead, somehow he's never won. Skyfall is absolutely deserving.

Agreed re: Deakins. But not for Newman's abysmal soundtrack to Skyfall. Just... ugh.

Really? I rather liked the score. But the cinematography was one of the most stand out parts, as I knew it would be. Deakins is the best cine working. The man makes me love stuff that's shot on digital. Granted, he'd never use that Red crap, but still, it's genuinely a lot harder to make things look that beautiful and dynamic on digital. Just shows his brilliance. I can't wait to see his work again on blu-ray when my pre-order ships.

Several, yes. He's definitely very good, but I just don't think anyone has quite the brilliant Caravaggio-style skill with light and contrast that Deakins does. This sequence from The Assassination of Jesse James belongs in the goddamn Louvre:

He also is well-respected for being an all around good guy and supporter of aspiring filmmakers. Though he shoots multiple films a year, he still takes time to respond to student and indie filmmaker questions on his website. I have several DP friends who've taken advantage of his advice.

Hugo, huh? I was not much of a fan of that one. If anything, I might have gone with Moneyball.

There's no way Hugo deserved to win Best Picture. It's a stretch to even nominate it, in my opinion.

BAFTAs were last night. Argo won best picture and best director, further proving just how badly snubbed Affleck was by the AMPAS. A surprise win by Emmanuelle Riva for best actress, considering she's not exactly a frontrunner.

EDIT: Rogue1-and-a-half you might wanna edit this thread title so as to avoid confusion with your other thread. Even though there are no more major award ceremonies besides the Oscars left...

Well for one thing, no one besides Brits and people who really like film even know what the BAFTAs are, let alone what channel it'd be on in the States. Sure there's a large amount of Americans who watch shows on the BBC, but compared to the rest of the country it's definitely a niche interest.

So, on the Oscars, has anyone else seen any of the shorts? I somewhat resent that the Live-action shorts were hosted by the guy that did God of Love, the only short that I thought didn't even deserve to be shown with the rest of them yet went on to win. Henry and Curfew both seemed to be amazing and powerful, for different sorts of reasons, and the animated short Head over Heels was extremely emotional. I suspect Adam and Dog will get a lot of attention, as well.

I... see zero surprise with that one.

i have yet to see amour, i have tentative plans to watch it with someone later today, but of the 8 nominees i've seen beasts of the southern wild had by far the most profound impact on me. argo was a very well-made film, but i had very little emotional attachment to it. i think my second choice would be life of pi, followed by silver linings playbook.
