Hurricane Dean hits my old home in about 8 hrs...

I'm very worried for my family members there. I was there when Gilbert hit in 1988 and it just about destroyed the island. We were still recovering when I left in 1990. The good news is that the eye is passing south of the island. The bad news is that Jamaica's going to get seriously trashed by the maximum sustained winds for several hours straight.

If you're the praying type, please spend a second or two doing that. I'd appreciate it.

In any case, if you don't see much of me over the next day or so, at least you know why.

 

I won't be praying, but I will certainly keep them in mind and wish them all the very best.

Quick update: My cousin hasn't been heard from since before the storm hit. I took off yesterday when I got the news. So far, no further news on his whereabouts but that's not surprising given that phone lines and cell phone towers are out all over the island. The good news is that he's on the northern end of the island, which supposedly made it through, relatively unscathed. Everyone else is accounted for at this point and are ok.

 

Glad to hear things are okay, Brian. Try not to worry about your cousin: chances are he's alright.

 

You're awesome, Dave. Thanks. And yeah...I know I shouldn't worry, but it's kinda hard not to when I'm sitting here without the ability to do anything.

Thanks, Jay! Good news. My brother in Miami sent me word around 4 a.m. this morning and everyone's accounted for and ok except for my missing cousin. Chances are he's fine and holed up somplace drinking warm red stripe. In any case, if I haven't heard final word by tomorrow, I'm gonna fly out to Jamaica.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers! My cousin has been located. The little bugger decided to camp out where the red stripe was and went to one of his friends' houses. While we were all stressing about his dumb ass, he was drinking beer all through the storm!
