I never could understand why most of the aliens in Star Trek are humanoid. Except for the latest movie which is more like Star Wars.

Well, the real reason is that it was the only thing they could do with the budgets they had, I guess. I remember the guys who made BSG saying they didn't want to be like "Star Trek" and have a bunch of "bumpy-headed" aliens or anything like that.

Providing bumpy-head makeup, funny ears/eyebrows, or painting the actors different colors seems to have worked well for a long time, at any rate...

 

Star Wars isn't immune to that either.

Most of those aliens like Rodians or Gungans still have 2 arms and 2 legs and walk upright like a human, because they are people in suits or CGI over human actors. Sci-fi needs more non humanoid aliens in the sense that they should not have 4 limbs and a body shape like the way we do.

The Daleks spring to mind, they are very inhuman and that is part of what makes them iconic and feared. Compare that to the Cybermen who, although intimidating, are just metal humans.


There should be more aliens that look like jellyfish or slugs (like Jabba) or something that doesn't appear as if it was based on the human design.
