Is James Earl Jones the Voice of Your Darth Vader?

Ahhh, My Funny Speaking Friends with their Funny Ancient Language... You Should come to America where we have nothing ancient, are lacking in culture, and our language is just slang we co-opted from people who sound cooler than us.

Anyway... My Question is about Finnish Dubbing. WHen You Guys watch these movies are you watching them with subtitiles, or have all the voices been dubbed over with Finnish Actors, Or is everyone up there in the land of Dragons proficient enough in english that they don't bother with a translattion?

In the Event that they are all dubbed, are the voices a good fit for the charectors? Did the same actor who played Darth Vader play the voice in all three movies?
What About C-3PO is his prequel voice the same guy who did the OT?

 

We use (luckily) subtitles here in Finland. Only some cartoons for kids are dubbed. I think that we have very good system. Dubbed films are horrible.

So SW actors have their own voices.

I usually download my movies from Internet (yes, it is legal in here), so I don't care from subtitles and stuff like that. In my humble opinion Finnish is pretty lame language. It's hard and it sounds stupid and it is pretty boring too. You can't do so pompous speeches and movie lines than you can do in English.

For example "Join me and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son." it sounds stupid in Finnish. Even "Join me" sounds stupid in Finnish.

 

Is there anything changed or lost in translation in the subtitles or the opening crawl??

 

Subtitles always leaves things out from the original lines, so that is one reason why I don't like them. And if movie lines have fun with English grammar and words, it doesn't work in Finnish, so you will miss the joke if you only read the subtitles.

I don't think it's fault of finnish language. Rather it's just that many movie speeches are just totally something that no Finn would ever even say. That's why those speeches feel so stupid when translated in finnish.

True. For example it's pretty much annoying to watch any of the old Marx Brothers films with finnish subtitles because those jokes are just impossible to translate.

Well, I could agree that. Finns are just so boring people .. We have no ambition. So our language doesn't have anything what would sound cool.

I'm so happy we have subtitles, it was sooo horrible when they tried to dub the lines in the Bold and the Beautiful here... I hope the OT DVD has superior translations for the subtitles.

And the original English lines are so awesome and enjoyable I can't help listening to them.

Yeah, I remember that thing too. I found it quite amusing.

 

LA isn't really america.... it is it's own sovereigntity. Like Vatican City.

 

Finnish is a lame language for those who have no idea of how to use it creatively..

In my opinion Finnish truly is one of the most beautiful languages.. it's richness lies in many homonymies and polysemy (=one word can have many different meanings). These things make it possible to create wonderful poetry, humour and something we call "kielipeli" in finnish... "playing" with language.

It's not the language's fault that movie lines don't translate perfectly... it's just the differences between languages.

 

Is there an excellent Finnish Movie You could recomend to me that has been translated poorly to english?

 

I have seen very rarely "excellent" Finnish movies that I could recommend to anyone, and I've never seen how they're translated in other languages. There's a movie called "Tommy and the Wildcat" ("Poika ja ilves"), which I've heard they filmed twice; first they filmed a scene in Finnish and after that the same scene in English. It's the only Finnish movie that I've seen partially in English, but I can't recommend it because it's not a good movie.

Zap said it quite well. Finnish is difficult and rich, not lame, and bad movie translations are caused by differences between languages. Though I think that Finnish sounds a little "stiff", and I always get embarrassed when I hear Finns speaking in English. They often use the Finnish tempo in pronouncing the sentences, and it reminds me of that horrible "Mika Häkkinen" talk.

I enjoy watching cartoons, and they're the only TV programs / movies that are dubbed here in Finland. There are some movies that I like to hear in Finnish, because I've seen them so many tens of times and I'm used to the Finnish voices of the characters. But if I have the alternative to choose between Finnish and English dubbing, I choose the English one. I can't stand most Finnish dubbings if I've heard the original.

The Finnish system is very good; I like it that I can listen to the original voices and if I don't understand something, I just read the subtitles. And if the translation is odd, I can listen to the actor and understand a joke that is impossible to translate in Finnish. The idea of dubbing all movies is weird; I've heard they're doing that in Germany but I don't know for sure.

I've never seen a movie that had so bad subtitles that it ruined the movie. Sometimes the subtitles have been on the way when I wanted to see the whole picture, and many movies have difficulties translating jokes that are dependent of the language. At the moment I can remember one exception; the DVD of "Back to the Future" had pretty good Finnish subtitles in all of those jokes. They had been translated to totally new jokes instead of trying to make up something desperate of jokes that couldn't be translated literally ("Why is everything so heavy in the future?" and "Can I have a Tab? ...Pepsi Free?". A Devo suit thing was also translated well).

This is a funny page about bad movie translations. Unfortunately, the humor can't be understood if you don't understand Finnish.

 

So there are no great Finnish movies in the Hundred plus years of motion pictures... 75 years of them with sound? Whatabout Mediocre Finnish Movies... Or do you just save the trouble and film them in English in the first place?

I've been few times in German and it was pretty weird to watch some familiar TV series or movies in there, because most of the programs really were dubbed. But atleast some of them were still having English audio track.

Its mainly because of our culture. Most of the movies are made about Finns, so there ain't so many great stories to be told. And probably financial issues are one reason for quality of Finnish movies. One Hollywood movie uses more money than Finnish film bussiness uses in a year.

But atleast there has been few great war movies about the Winter War and if I'm not mistaken a new one should be comming soon. A movie about War-Marshal Mannerheim, one of our military leaders during the Winter War.

 

What about television...? Do you have naked girls doing your newscasts, or are those shows only for Communists and mediterainian countries?

 

One TV channel had a Finnish porn star making naked newsreading but the channel went to bankruptcy.

Anyway nudity is allowed in Finnish TV, only hard porn can't be shown in national tv channels but I think cable channels are allowed to do it.

And Finnish TV doesn't have samekind censorship than you guys have. We don't "beep" swearwords or censor genitals or anything like that.

I've understood that it's perfectly legal and possible. There are always some people who complain about everything.
These grannies forget one thing: you don't have to watch it, if you don't want to. Instead, they want to ban everything they don't want to see.
I don't care at all, let the cable channels show anything they want, I'm not watching anyway. If someone wants to watch xxx-stuff from tv, go ahead, it doesn't affect me.
But I can't stand mindless whining and complaining about irrelevant issues.

 

I'm not complaining... I'm impressed! Let your Genitals flop across the screen before we get the update on the weather. It beats the stuff we use as filler for local news. We Get Heroic Cats and the man who has collected 3000 "clever" buttons...

 

Do you know if the New DVD's are going to have a Finnish Track? Is your Release date the same as Ours?

 

there will be finnish subtitles and almost same release date (september 22), maybe it will be same date(september 21) but that was the only confirmed release date that i found here in finland.
