    Random thread of the day:

One of the thoughts that I had about the nature of fiction is that all fictional stories are real somewhere. If the universe is infinite in scope, or if there are an infinite number of universes (see Quantum Physics and the multiverse theory), and assuming that the laws of physics AREN'T constant throughout all these universes, wouldn't all fiction have to be real in one place or another?

One of the main themes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower is how "reality is a muscle and the mind is an IV" and that when you are creating a story, you are actually puncturing the fabric of reality and peering into that part of the multiverse that only you have access to. In a sense, Stephen King isn't creating the dark tower... he only writes what he sees.

    So, what I'm saying is...

STAR WARS IS REAL AND ALL RETCONS ARE IRRELEVANT BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL TAKING PLACE SOMEWHERE[face_party]

But you can never know they are taking place due to quantum uncertainty, therefore it remains practically fiction!

Counterargument: what's real, and is a thing real when it is incapable of being perceived?

Classical Platonic retort would be that only those that remain in the cave are unable to gain the wisdom to perceive the Forms, if you can perceive the Form of a Story, then you need not observe an actual story! :)

Sheer playing aside though, an awful lot of high-level astrophysics seems to revolve around seeing things indirectly, by their effect on the things we can see!

Heinlein referred to the concept as "Pantheistic Solipsism" in Number of the Beast. It was a pretty silly idea in a pretty silly book.

As a long-time DC comics reader, this thread amuses me and I approve.

It does? Because I'm generally much more persnickety about Star Wars canon. :p
I just don't like grumbling until there's something to grumble about.

If you're able to reconcile and make DC continuity still work for you after umpteen reboots, SW is hardly likely to prove a challenge!

Unless you like one style of canon for one universe and another for another? She said, as a DC reader who's totally laid back about DC canon and totally paranoid about SW canon? ;)

And if we're voting on reality, I was about to announce that clearly you are all part of my phaneron, but Force knows what creating you lot would say about my mind...

    Well.... There's always this...

More seriously, yeah, there is that essential difference in nature to be factored in. I mean, I was convinced Apocalypse and Crucible would finally break Sinny's continuity skills but no! Instead it's Star Wood that's actually doing that to him!

In an interview in Star Wars Insider, Brian Blessed said something along those lines about having a feeling somewhere Star Wars was real.

Well metaphysics says if enough people believe something the result will manifest somehow. That being said, if there are galactic wide cultures out there, Star Wars is a common thing' ; archtypes and history bears out, freedoms turn into superpowers of industry followed by collapse, tyranny, and renewal. So in that capcity, yes thse themes have played in God's sand boxes since the dawn of time.

Anybody else having Galaxy Quest flashbacks?
    "I'm not a total loser, I know it's just a TV show."
"No, it's all real, I'm on the ship and I need your help!"
