    Title: Legacies
    Author: DarthIshtar
    Timeframe: TPM/before the saga
Characters: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and a couple of OCs.
Disclaimer: Everything belongs to George Lucas, except Ler and Seren.
Author's Note: This is, admittedly, not my best work, but I wrote it as my first Qui-Gon Jinn fic for www.qui-gonline.org's fiction contest. The challenge was to write a vignette about Qui-Gon defying the Council.

The funeral pyre had finally flickered out, leaving nothing of the Jedi Master but ashes and memories.

Obi-Wan Kenobi sat alone before the bier, lost in thought. Queen Amidala had insisted on escorting Anakin back to their quarters for the night, leaving him time for solitary meditation and his last moments with his Master.

Despite everything that Qui-Gon had taught him about the Force and its calming, peaceful influence, Obi-Wan could not bring himself to point where he could forgive himself. He had failed his Master and yet the Council had given him stewardship over Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One. This puzzled him greatly.

He raised his eyes to the bier. I can't do it, Master.

    ?Jedi Kenobi??

Obi-Wan turned his head in the direction of the soft voice. He found a young woman perhaps two years his junior, standing at the entrance to the chamber. She wore her long, dark hair pulled back from her temples and left the rest hanging down her back. Her features were delicate, her stature small, and he did not take notice of her until she met his gaze.

The eyes were a piercing blue and close-set and hauntingly familiar.

    ?Yes,? he replied softly.

?I thought I would find you here,? she said quietly. ?He always said that you would never be rushed through anything. You live life on your own schedule, but know how not to waste any minute of a day.?

She crossed to his side and sank onto the bench next to him. ?He always said that if he were blessed with a measure of your wisdom and the patience of Master Yoda, he would be a great man.?

Obi-Wan stared at her. ?Who are you?? he breathed.

She extended a hand. ?Dr. Seren Jinn. Qui-Gon Jinn was my father.?

Obi-Wan's jaw dropped. Seren was clearly not a Jedi, else she would be in the traditional robes rather than the long, blue gown that she was wearing. ?He never told me that he had a Force-blind daughter.?

She gazed down at her hands. ?He didn't.?

    He frowned. ?Then, how...?

Seren closed her eyes, but the tears came anyway. ?You know how bad he was at following commands from the Council.?

    Obi-Wan nodded. ?I think you'd better explain.?

She nodded. ?It all started just after I was born. Father had just lost his most talented apprentice...?
    * * *
?Perhaps we should look into putting her into a Force-induced trance.?

Qui-Gon smiled wearily at his wife and continued to pat his daughter's tiny back. ?She's not that restless.?

Ler rolled her eyes and sat back in the self-conforming chair. ?Oh, no? Mace says that you started snoring during a Council debriefing.?

?I do believe that was Master Yoda,? Qui-Gon countered.

Ler grinned. ?At his age, I'm surprised he's ever awake.? She reached over to rub Seren's back.

?That is one ladylike baby. She won't even burp when being pummeled.?

?Just like her mother,? he said.

?You don't have to wake up for these late-night snacks,? she said.

Qui-Gon frowned in mock dismay. ?She's my daughter, too.?

Abruptly, Seren burped and Qui-Gon's grin spread to the edges of his face. ?That's a good girl,? he whispered.

Ler stood and took their daughter into her arms. ?If only the rest of the Order could see you now. You have the reputation of being the toughest Master after Yoda and here you are, praising a three-month old for her bodily functions.?

    ?No shame in that.?

?What time is the Council representative coming??

?In four hours,? Qui-Gon mumbled. ?Are you sure you can't be here??

She winced. ?I wish I could, but there's an emergency session of the Defense Council and if I'm not there to keep the children from fighting, it could get very ugly.?

    ?All right.?

What a lovely vignette Ish!! =D=

Especially loved the added touch of the journal -- and the defiance was Qui-Gon at his finest ;)

Kynstar--Oh that was great! Loved the journal! Well done!

Thanks, especially since you're in on Qui-gon stories with Layren. I like the journal idea a lot, it inspired the "Between the Lines" fic that I'm currently working on.

    Layren--Awwwwwwwwwwwwww that was so sweet!

I can't tell which was my favorite part, but it might have been Qui-gon burping his baby while being a tough Jedi Master.

    Thanks.

Thanks. I'm glad you think so, even though this is the first Qui-Gon story I wrote and now I feel more comfortable with him.

LOL, everyone should read Wayward Beings if they have Jawdrop moments, because in there, I've been majorly setting up the romance of Qui-Gon and Ler, but this is official proof that it's meant to be. ;)

I also, for a moment, thought that you were the one that was involved in that contest, so was surprised that you were surprised by this, but then remembered that I sometimes confuse you and JaneJinn. Beg pardon. :) I was surprised at myself for writing it back in 2000 or so.
