It looks wonderful! I have a question, though- do you remember where you got your sequins?

That is a really awesome dress. It looks really great. You can tell that you really took time to take care of the fine details to pull it all together.

thanks for the link! Those look great.... I've already ordered some clear irodescent sequins (those arrived today- they look good) and I also ordered some greenish goldish color that looked really nice... now I just need to find a fabric or ribbon to sew them to...

Neimhaille, you gown turned out beautiful! [face_love] [face_love]

Oh! Did you use Dylon to dye your Inner Dress? Can offer some advice on what color to use? I used Madonna Blue, then Arabian Blue on White Cheesecloth for mine but it still ended up not dark enough

I really need to redo my cape so it'll be as long as the Inner Dress and find ways to redye the Inner Dress to make it darker. [face_hypnotized]

Sorry for not getting back earlier, my mum had an operation today and so I've been a bit worried about it:) It went fine and all things going well she will continue to be so :)

    liannb
Thanks :) I really hope you get that tape transferred :) sounds really neat, especially if there are back views ;)

jedilucass Thanks :) Actually I got mine from the second hand store ;) It was $NZ10 for the roll of 72 yards. They should be easily found though, and I'd probably go for a darker base colour. I was working on a budget. I did overdye my sequins so the cotton base took up the dye and blended in better. Also the coating on the sequins became more metallic.
The sequins I did use were a pale very clear green with iris coating. Now usually called aurora (AB).

I used possibly half the roll by the way. I haven't actually measured how much yardage went in... and I haven't yet got the sequins on the cloak. I really do recommend them if you have time to do them. On film they really stand out.

Oh I just calculated how much yardage... 31.94m or 103 feet. Hmmmm.. no wonder my wrists hurt...

    Darth_Eagle
Thanks :) I did use dylon, I used the cold water dye in Riviera Blue, and used the right amount of salt and colour fix ;)
The first lot had enough salt but not enough fix... you neeeed the fix ;)

It was dunked and swirled in the dyebath for about 10 minutes I suppose. But the colour is uneven, which works for this, even though it doesn't show up quite so well in my photos ;)

After the first dye failure I didn't try for the stripey effect, but I still have the dye bath and a smaller stronger lot in case I do decide to go that road.

Tenyon, Maggie, Obi-Dawn, ObiWill, Takianna Thank you :)

Oic. I used the Multi-Purpose Dye for mine as a little skeptic these days over the Cold Dye one after my Haldir March Warden Outer Tunic barely became a shade grey darker tho' it's a Cotton & Wool mix. :(

    [image=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/idrial/Star_Wars/Water_Gown/DSCN1085.jpg]
(The night before it became the Inner Dress) ;)

Will have to dig out the swatch I have put aside and continue experiment some more to get the tone I want. I guess only the Cheesecloth will pick up the dye later when I redye the dress as the lining is Pongee/Polyester.

The good thing is, from this experiment of colors, I figure out the color of the dye to use later for my Eowyn Refugee/K.O. Inner Dress! :p

Neimhaille I was actually logged into my fiance's account still [face_blush]. I was too lazy to turn my own computer on, so I used his lol.

I also have the clear AB sequins for mine. I've been collecting swatches from all over to see what I like best. Since the original used a devore velvet that was painted, thats the route I'm trying to go too. Check out maggie's site, she has some screen shots of the video (I think its the same one liannb was talking about) - in the water dress section :) The colors are VERY different than what was in the movie - that scene looks like there is a blue-ish haze over it.

Neimhaille, thanks for the info! I plan on doing all of the sequins- this is my "big" project of the year. And your info gives me an idea of how much sequins I'm going to need- a lot!

    Darth_Eagle, very pretty color!

my fun greenish sequins hasn't come yet, but after that I need to gert fabric to sew them on.... I too plan on doing hte devore velvet/painting method for the cloak... but that's after I save the money for the velvet. question: does the devore method work on non-silk velvets?

Edit: just realized that by right clicking on the video, on Windows Media, it can go full screen !!! =)

    That's great! =D=

Heeheee.....so many months gone and I still haven't got back to this project to finish it. Just need to lengthen and spray paint the design on the Cloak, add more flowers to the wig and add the gemstone to the dress collar. Then again, it can be worn as it is rite now.

Hope I finish it by Nov for the Exhibition! :p

My work continues on this costume... but I'd thought I'd update with new information from not only the exhibit (thanks so much goes out to biba-fett for answering questions, but from dvd caps and the like...

My NEW AND IMPROVED Theory of this costume is as follows:

Two parts of this costume are the cloak and the underdress.

    CLOAK:
Let's see if I can break this down: the cloak is painted devore velvet in shades that vary from blue to gray to silver to purple to aqua. There is a pattern of waves, and it varies from each side of the cloak. If looking at it head on, it seems that the pattern is mirror to each other, and one might be upside down mirror of the other. (this is best seen in the costume documentary's view of this costume on the dummy) The devore pattern is harder to figure out. If you blow up the www.padawansguide.com 's exhibit pictures of this costume ( the one I used was of both the shoes) you can see some of the devore- it seems to follow the wave pattern in general shape, but I could be wrong.

Sequins are scattered throughout the cloak, sometimes following the wave pattern, but most of the time scattered. The closer you get to the 3 ribbons of sequins, the more the sequins on the cloak follow the wave pattern. This is best seen in images of padme in the coffin from the side.

The "ribbons" are of strung sequins, and are three strands per ribbon. There are three ribbons on each side of the cloak's opening. They attach UNDER the collar.

The collar is also of strung sequins that is just sewn horizontially onto it.

When looking at the pictures of the cloak on the dummy, it seems to have shoulder seams. The direction of waves on the cloak also seems to change there. The making of shot above makes me think that the velvet was painted and devored as one piece and then cut and sewn to make the cloak...

    THE UNDERDRESS:

From the "Dressing a Galaxy book, we have found out the following: "The underdress in a silk mousseline is ombre-dyed in blue-greens with the hand-pleated panels that form the costume falling from a smocked yoke area that is edged with silver and sapphire-stone decoration."
There seems to be 5 of the smaller stones on each side of the big "drop" stone in the middle of the neckline. Whatever the smaller stones are, they are in a setting of dark silver- it reminds me a lot of a bracelet.
The smocking is done horizontally, and looks like just regular ol' smocking, nothing like the lattice smocking on the naboo nightgown in episode two. This goes down till about when her pregnant belly starts, and then it's just pleats, as the dressing a galaxy book describes. The hem seems to be either serged or finished with a beaded trim thing- I haven't quite figured that out yet.

    THE SHOES
Seem to be dyeable flats in aqua, with sequins that look alot like the sequins used on the collar sewn onto just the front part of the shoe. There is also white seed beads in some sort of design, possiblly the naboo symble. The space between the beading is filled with white netting of some sort.

and that's what I"m going to make.

that seems to be quite an accurate analysis of the costume,

one thing though, I really don't see the devore in the velvet (that is if I've understood the definition of devore correctly...) if someone can point out exactly where it is visible, that'd be greatly appreciated =)

    Just a suggestion:

Hancock's fabric down here in tennessee has a aqua ribbon covered in sequins, and the colors are all in blue/green shades. They kinda flash different colors in different lights. Anyways, they are a great match for Padme's funeral dress from Episode 3.

Be warned, they are TINY little things. Take two seed beads and put them on a string, tightly together, and that is the width of one sequin. They would work great for anyone doing a doll costume, but I *think* they are too small for a full size dress.

Keep the faith and God bless!

My hancocks had these on sale... but there was a large selection... but they only had one spool, not enough for what I wanted.. *le sigh*

Just a little progress update. Got all my materials for the cloak, and this weekend I'm going to start devore test pieces. kay_dee has amazing pictures of the velvet from the dressing a galaxy exhibit, and one is a close up of the velvet. It seems to me that the darkest shade of blue (the navy color, almost) is what the devore shape is. That's what I'm flying by the seat of my pants with, anyway.

First, i want to thank Sister Sola for unlocking this topic :) I'm planning to make a doll sized gown and I have a few questions to ask if anyone knows how to make dresses for dolls :)

    1- Should i take mesurements?
2- What types of fabric should I buy?
3- How should I do the hair?
4- How can I repaint her face?
5- How can I make the same casket she was in?
6- What color should I paint it in?
7- What kinds of things should I make her look pregnant like she was in the movie?
8- Where can I get the small flowers?
9- What kinds of dolls can her move her arms and hands?
10-Where can I buy the sequins?
11-Where can I buy the paint to repaint her face?
11-How can i do the japor snippet?
12-What kind of paint brush I need to use to paint her face?

I hope these questions are good enough. Hope to see an answer real soon:) or if you want to help me personally, please feel free to email me at i.love.severussnape@gmail.com with the Subject: Padme Water Gown Help :)

Well....I guess nobody answer so far is because not that many people actually make Costumes for Doll or if they do, they don't come here often. And many of your questions are too specific that only a fellow Doll Maker can answer.

How about asking it on a Doll-Making Forum or ask for some advice with people who make costumes for dolls? Just do a search online and I'm sure you can find a link to such Forums or Websites.

You can also check out here for some lead. ;)

Have you looked at any sites that specialise in doll making? There is a site that has some tips and patterns for various costumes from movies. They don't have this specific one but they have a lot of other similier patterns! They are doll patterns and I am sure they can be scaled down or up to suit your doll!

Good Luck and keep us up-dated!!!!!:)
