There was another thread, but now it's locked.

    [image=http://www.ifc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Portlandia-season-1-episode-4-Mayor-is-Missing-s01e04.jpg]

For the uninitiated: Quirky (putting it mildly) sketch show starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) about Portland, where weird is mainstream and everyone is into DIY and bike culture and composting and goes to feminist bookstores and has tattoos and dresses like they're taking their dog for a walk rather than going to work in a corporate office and it's all kind of true. (Note: description does not apply to suburbs or SW.)

You can watch some episodes on Hulu for the next four hours (http://www.hulu.com/portlandia), or you can probably track them down in ways I officially do not condone. Also, I've heard season one is on Netflix. Also, it airs on IFC.

If you appreciate weird sketch comedy, you should watch. If you're a BSG fan, you should at least watch 2x02 (on hulu or airing soon on IFC). OLMOS. SERIOUSLY.

On the east side? We probably live really close.

It's a lame suburb. It's Beaverton's even less cool little brother.

My one major complaint about the BSG sketch is that Katee Sackhoff did not appear.

She is a terrible actress and would have ruined it anyway.

I lived in Beaverton (Beaver Class of 1994 lol).

    Beaverton ****ing sucks.

Seriously, I never knew a much different and cool culture existed in the city proper until after I moved back to Seattle.

And I've been meaning to check out that show.

    Beaverton.

I briefly lived with some mates in a studio on Killingsworth. Your description of the city is true. I would add that part of the 'charm' is in the layout being eerily akin to its residents somehow becoming automatic denizens of the land inside Mr. Rogers' wall. It's a river surrounded by a mountain/a building/a mountain/a building/a mountain/etc. with a little trolly car riding all over the place in their midst. Talking lions and puppety, hook nosed, rosy cheeked women were everywhere I turned.

I worked in Milwaukie, but my vote for dismissable suburbs would be Tualitin and (the surprsingly accurately named) ZigZag.

So I gave it a try being it's on netflix instant streaming. Watched the first 3 episodes. Better than expected, but there are still some clunker sketches. I'll keep watching because I think there might be more good over bad.

Typical sketch comedy. But yeah, the good ones are great. The obsessed bike guy is embarrassingly true. I know at least five dudes like that.

The opening credits are also awesome. If only it were always that sunny.

Rossl: Oh, the lame one. nvm

OK, so I watched the pilot a little while back and thought it sucked because it was just humor for people with no idea how actual coastal liberals live ("Lulz, you guys care about food sourcing?" *hops in the FUV and drives to McDonald's*) But later on, I decided to give the show a second chance because I know pilots in general aren't a good measure of a show's quality, and I'm really glad I did. The dumpster diving sketch in particular was fantastic and possibly resonated a bit with me.

Also, I had no idea the female lead was a member of Sleater-Kinney until I heard her do the vocals for the Portland theme song. [face_blush]
