Somehow, I get the feeling that she isn't going to tell us that.

"And that's different from you and me how?" Wes asked pointedly. He remembered all too well their last altercation. Wedge was lucky he'd pushed him instead of punched him.
For some reason, this reminds me of Bitter Reunion. I half expected Wes to have hit the wall by now.

 

You wouldn't kill your character off... again... would you? Haven't you killed off your quota of Rogues for this story already?

 

Not so with Hobbie's death - especially not when the person you needed to give the news to was in a mental facility because he was depressed and suicidal.

Not only that, but Jesina was ill, possibly dying.

It was a good thing that Tycho had gone into the hospital before they'd embarked on this assignment. For Corran's supposed death to have pushed him over the edge, he must have been extremely close to it as it were. If he'd been here, now, to see what was happening with Jesina and then had to deal with Hobbie's death?.
He closed his eyes once more. He didn't want to think about what might have happened had that been the situation.
It is indeed preferable not to think of that... The situation is rather sad like that

He glanced back at the comm unit. He'd let Winter know, though, so she could talk to Ishana about it. He certainly couldn't deliver news like this without Tycho's doctor knowing about it, just in case he didn't handle it well.
Just in case? Who was he kidding?

Wedge swore under his breath. "Can it wait, Doctor?"
"No. I need someone responsible for Jesina Dreis down here now." He couldn't tell from the sound of her voice whether this was good or bad. The way things were going, probably the latter.

I'm not in the least bit assured that Tycho isn't going to totally flip when he finds out, even if Winter and the Doc are right there. I think he's just gonna snap.... but I guess I'll have to wait and see won't I?

Or you could cheat... Well, remember, part of what's pushed him to this is NOT talking to people. At this point, Winter and Ishana aren't going to let him get away with not talking... and neither will Wedge. You'll get to see the conversation though.

Wonderful job with these posts, Jes. You've captured the emotions beautifully. I thought Wedge and Wes' reactions were perfectly done. That scene between them was really good, very-in-character for them both to react that way. Ugh, it's all so sad...

Hoping Jesina's is all right... that last message didn't sound to good.

K_A - Thanks! I liked that scene... afterward I kinda wished I'd dragged it out more, but in the end I think it was good the way it ended up. As for Jes, well, you'll just have to wait and see

 

Chapter 28


Wes half-ran to the med center. Dr. Shula was waiting for him. "What's going on? Is something wrong?" he asked, not bothering to try to hide his worry. He glanced over at the bed that Jesina lay in and frowned. She looked the same.

"She's getting worse; it's affecting her more rapidly than I'd expected. But I do have good news, and this is what I needed you for. Apparently, they've seen this before on Coruscant." A strange look crossed her face. "It was used on General Bel Iblis."

Wes frowned. That was interesting, if in a frightening and concerning way. "Is he all right?"

She nodded. "Yes, he's fine. Still a little weak, but he resumed command within a week of beginning treatment. And he was much worse off than Jesina is, and not as healthy to begin with, being older and less active than she is."

"So you know how to treat it?"

She nodded. "It's a series of injections - essentially a cocktail of a couple of different hormones. It's intended to do exactly what I said earlier - counteract the high levels of AHD in her bloodstream. It'll be a strict regimen - every four hours, on the hour, for the next thirty-six hours, and then every eight hours, on the hour, for the following sixteen."

He frowned. "It sounds simple enough." Glancing between her and Jesina, he thought for a moment. "No offense, but how come you couldn't figure it out?" Not that he even understood what she'd just said?.

She smiled at him, seemingly having expected the question. "None taken. The second hormone in the cocktail is synthetic. It's not something that naturally occurs in the body. It was created to treat another illness, and apparently the General's doctors, in their research for a cure, learned that it had, in its early uses, had the types of effects they were looking for. If I'd kept looking, I might have found it, but I wouldn't have really known where to look."

Wes nodded. He still didn't understand a word she'd said, but she seemed to think it made sense and that was good enough for him. He knew where his expertise lay, and it was more toward taking lives than saving them. "What did you need someone for?"

"I need authorization to treat. This is still considered experimental, and for that we need either a family member or, absent family, a superior officer."

"Can I give you my word that Wedge will okay this? He's in a briefing right now and time is something we really don't have right now."

"I can accept that, as long as, as soon as he's free, you get him to sign off on it. I could wait, but I don't want to let her get any worse."

He could appreciate that. "He will; don't worry about that." He looked worriedly at Jesina and, for the first time, the meaning of this whole conversation dawned on his exhausted mind. "She's going to be all right then? When will she wake up?"

"It took nearly sixteen hours for General Bel Iblis to start to come around. I'd imagine that it'll take her half that. As I said before, she's in better shape than he was - much better. They forwarded me his test results and health records so I could have a better idea of what I was looking at."

He nodded. "Do what you have to do," he said slowly, glancing again at Jesina's bed. He didn't want to leave, but Wedge needed him in briefing. With Jesina down like this, he was now second-in-command, and he needed to know what was going on. Elscol had to get back to the ground, a few of the Wraiths would probably be going with her, and they'd probably need a fighter escort to be assured of making it to the surface in one piece. Besides, Jesina wouldn't be waking up for a few hours yet, so there really wasn't anything he could do by staying here, anyway. "I need to go. Let me know immediately if anything changes."

"I will." As he turned away, he felt her hand on his arm and turned back. "She's going to be fine. Spend your time worrying about something that actually needs to be worried about."

Things are starting to look up... sorta...

I like this Corran a lot better than the FT one.

Oh, and one mistake (though since this is slightly AU, it might be different): Kell is still a LT.

 

Kell blowing stuff up. Cool. I like. Just hope Jes isn't allergic to any of the stuff, like asprin in case someone travels back in time to save her from having a heart attack, but the medication given to her to prevent it is what caused it in the first place.

"Blow it up," she replied, glancing at Kell Tainer, and Wedge stifled a laugh.
Kell grinned, stood, and bowed, and then sat back down. "At your service, ma'am."
"Yes, please, take him," Face told her, motioning with his hands as if to push Kell toward her, eliciting laughter - even from Inyri, though she still looked close to tears.
Hehehehee. *snicker snicker*

Wedge arched an eyebrow at him. "Unless you arranged for someone to impersonate you and try to kill me, I don't see what you have to feel badly about."
Oh please Wedge. You're a registered member of the blame-myself-for-everything club. Like you can talk.

Yay postie!! Things are a little more optimistic now...don't expect it to last...

 

He saw Janson, who had just slipped back into the room, stiffen when he assigned Dia to Hobbie's position.
