You are right HanSolo29 about what I meant about the teamwork/collaboration on a project either working on a comic / poster / fan-fic. It be fun to do.

About the commentary/essay idea... Iverna sums it up pretty well. I'll go a bit more indepth on one angle as an example. My original character, Rowan, I have been writing him for about 6 years now. I have some of the early design sketches from that time of what he could look like and compare all the way through to his more recent and final look. The obstacles that the character went through reflects in his behaviour and also his attire. We could kinda do what WETA did for in the featurettes for LotR how they explained the concept, history and culture for the things they made.

Another thing that I sometimes do with my writing is to storyboard some of the sequences that I envisioned. I either develop it more or scale back and use alternate ideas. I'm contemplating whether to show of some of them in my art thread.

I would really really love a resource thread. Now that my art muse has struck me in the most fantastic way, it would be great to read up on hints and suggestions.

I'm all for someone explaining to me how the heck to draw hair. [face_plain]

I think I'm going to be around here very often, so I'd love to participate in a challenge.
Wasn't it a year or two ago where the was a challenge with the fanfic authors? I thought that was a great idea.

Also, I love the challenge idea for drawing creatues. I have to agree with Tarsier -- there aren't many good pics of Star Wars creatures around.

I did one tutorial over on dA that's gone over pretty well, so I'm totally up for doing some kind of resource thread. Drawing hair is actually not very difficult at all... to put it like Han, it's just a load of simple tricks. [face_laugh] But yeah, I can definitely help out with realism and pencils, I know my way around those pretty well.

After reading the responses here, I think it's pretty much a given that the challenge will return. At this point, I'm going to wait till March 1st to start it up to keep within the month timeline or however long we decide to keep the duration. Maybe I will keep it running for a few months at a time, but with a number of topics to choose from instead of just one per month.

Yes, we did try to organize something early last year with the fanfic authors. Unfortunately, it never got off the ground due to lack of interest. I think a major issue with that first outing was limiting it to OCs. I don't know what other people think, but I'd rather draw canon characters in my own situations before OCs. That's just my personal preference and it's just one reason why I would be willing to give it another chance. If people are really interested in doing another collaborative effort with fanfic, just let me know for certain and then I can go ahead and contact the fanfic mods and get the ball rolling on that.

I think extending it to include all characters would be great. It's a real challenge to draw someone else's character because usually they have quite specific ideas of what they look like, and I for one am always terrified of screwing up and ruining it... so yeah. But I think it's a cool idea, and I can see it being pretty popular.

I agree. I feel that branching out to canon characters and situations will really help stir up some interest. If there is no other issues at the moment, I'll go ahead and get moving on this and keep you updated on the progress.

On another note, I went ahead and started the resource thread here. Everyone is welcomed to participate and my goal is to eventually build up a very thorough database that will become a useful tool to everyone.

Something else I was thinking about was a thread for people to request formal critiques and advice for their art. Critiques are a very useful tool to any artist and I feel it could really benefit the community here. We'll just need to set some ground rules so people don't go tearing into each other for the sake of it. I've seen that happen in the past and it never turns out pretty.

Contest return on March 1st! That's the day after I receive my Cintiq 21x! This will be the perfect opportunity to take it for a test run! =) Awesome! Looking forward to the next contest! I started paying attention to these boards around the time the last contest was ending and couldn't participate on time!

I have drawn other people's OC for GAW. There is the weight of trying not to screw it up and I take the utmost care, time and respect for each one I do. It also helps to know the person you are drawing for and have their constant feedback which makes it enjoyable and fun working together and also rewarding to know how pleased they are to see their characters take visual form.

Portraits of friends and family... I am uncomfortable with doing as in the past some individual's reactions to a drawing of themself was... volatile and to the extreme. Some love it but those that didn't makes it harder to do.

Speaking of the previous challenge, what will happen to those entries from the last one?

At this point, I think I'm just going to pool them into the next round of voting once the challenge starts back up. There are only 4 entries from the last one(which speaks volumes for how much interest we had in the last months), so it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I like that idea. I know I've really benefited from this myself; my mother's an art teacher and her feedback is always tremendously helpful. The best part is that you don't have to be an expert artist in order to take part, either, because most people can spot if the proportions are wrong or the hair looks flat (or whatever) even if they couldn't do it better themselves. And it can be hugely helpful to the artist, just to have someone with a bit of distance to the work go "hey, it's good, but I think the proportions here are off..." or whatever.

I do agree about the rules. It's really important, I think, to keep these things constructive. I've seen it in writing communities where people get really rude and tear others down just to make themselves feel better; I would hate to see that here. So yes, it should probably be clear that a) people ought to keep feedback constructive (a la, "this looks a bit off, maybe if you change it to this") and encouraging (so point out what works for you, what you like, as well), and b) submitting your work for critique is done in the knowledge that you will not just get "this is great" but actual crit telling you what you might change and what doesn't work, as well as the positives. I think if those two things were kept in mind in other groups I've been part of, the atmosphere would've been much nicer!

We could also write up some pointers for people to keep in mind while critiquing, to help keep things constructive and friendly. That might help critiquers with knowing what to watch out for as well.

Anyway, I am definitely up for that as well. I like critiquing. [face_peace]

I like the latest ideas, even though I am bad at explaining what I do... despite being an art teacher. (Perhaps I taught too much languages the past 3 days.) I just follow my instincts and love messing around with my art material.

Hi everyone! I'm new here, I just started drawing and I think noses are the things I draw best, hands are horrible things, eyes are great and body?s are easyish... okay now that I?ve said that!

Does anyone know of a good person to start drawing? I?m looking for a star wars character,( I?ve already drawn Myself as a Jedi, Queen Organa, Padme Amidala, Samantha Carter (okay maybe not SW but SG) and that's about it...) I?m looking for interesting body poses, and a challenging face I?m not very good but I find drawing very relaxing!, (oh, I can't do 3/4 to save my life!) anyone know of a good place to start looking for these kinds of pictures? I?ve been looking all over wookepidia but haven?t found anything and searching the internet for ?interesting star wars faces to draw? hasn?t come up with much...

Thanks in advance! And keep up the great work!

    Arica.

God Bless the USA [face_flag] and a galaxy far far away...

Any character that is non-Human and has either lots of wrinkles (wrinkles are fun to draw), lots of rough texture, an oddly-shaped head, weird eyes, lots of fur... Creatures and monsters, too. Those usually provide a nice challenge. Drawing insects, too.

As for who to draw... How about Zuckuss? He's pretty challenging to draw. Bossk has provided his share of challenges for me before; he's pretty fun to draw. Or perhaps Jabba? Jabba's rancor? Yoda, if you're looking for some Jedi?

As for getting images... if you're looking on Wookieepedia and have a specific character in mind, just search for "Category:Images of [that character's name]." For example, Category:Images of Jabba Desilijic Tiure. As for Google... I've searched for portrait headshots a few times and got some people to draw or reference to for shading and pose.

I also find non-humans easier at times. Or creatures. I feel I still have to practice much on human lips and noses as well.

At present I start to do some characters of my own fanfic, which was not easy at all. One has a certain idea in the mind, but the hands produce a very different outcome.Sigh!

Samantha Carter is awesome AricaBolts :), I love to see your drawings of her. I've always wanted to work on some SG related pieces but I haven't gotten around to it. As Bilbo says:" It's a dangerous business going out your door. You step out onto the road and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

I started out doing creatures and vehicles and now... a large percentage of my works are character based. Is there a favourite character of yours that you do like drawing? That can help with motivation and learning new techniques. 3/4 view isn't that bad, it takes some practice but you'll get the hang of it.

Oh, another suggestion for a nice drawing challenge, one I utilized earlier this evening: Drawing characters naked! And don't just confine yourself just human or humanoid characters, strip down some exotics and draw them in the buff! Draw Vergere in her birthday suit! Draw Bossk naked as the day he was hatched! It sounds silly, but I'm actually being serious! Drawing characters naked is seriously a great exercise in anatomy and proportion.

I'll be sure to scan and upload my naked Gand soon.

That's actually not a bad idea. Anatomy is an area a lot of artists struggle with and even more seasoned artists could use a good brush up now and then.

The only thing I see being a concern is the TOS and what will be appropriate for the boards. I know a knew policy was recently paced in the JCC that laxed this rule a bit, so maybe if we follow that, we should be fine. Basically, the images will need to be posted as a link and a warning that some content may not be work safe needs to be clearly visible. I know this will be considered art and we're in no way condoning pornographic imagery, but we need to cover all the bases and make sure no one is being offended.

Just bringing this over here at C_O's request...and because I wanted to contribute to the overall discussion. :p

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the keys being different. The only real difference I see is the use of the "apple" where the "window" keys are on the PC. Everything else is essentially the same. My Mac is also equipped with the usual "delete" key - right in the same spot where it's usually located on the PC. So, I'm a little confused by what you mean there.

Now, if you are talking about keyboard shortcuts, then I agree with you there. I use a Mac at work and I have a PC at home. I constantly find myself using the Mac shortcuts at home while working in Photoshop, InDesign, etc and vice-versa. It does take some time to get used to.

With that said, I find myself liking Mac more and more. Maybe it's because I work with them everyday and I've finally learned to navigate the blasted thing, but things are definitely looking up. I'm not yet at the point where I want to throw out my PC and buy a Mac, but I'm not entirely opposed to them like I once was either.

Thank you HS29, I had wanted to say further but didn't want to bog down the other thread. :)

I use PC at work, Mac at campus and both Mac/Windows for home. While my set up at home has the best of both worlds, I tend to use the OSX/Mac far more often. The keyboard layout on some models of MacBooks are different from the iMacs/PC and are more condensed but I've never found that a problem.

There are ways of having Windows running on a Mac, either using BootCamp to create a separate partition or using a parallel's program to have Windows and OSX running at the same time. This is handy to have when needing to use Window's based software that you already have.

Regarding colours, everyone's monitor is different and it is recommended to calibrate your colour profile. For Macs, I had been taught that they are capable of having a larger colour range than PC and when using Photoshop, it is recommended to use Adobe RGB profile for your works. There is more to it than that and when dealing with prints but I won't go into that.
