The Chess, Checkers (and other things) Game Thread

In this thread you get to challenge your fellow JCers to games of Chess and Checkers. I, Darthness, have recently discovered that, using only text and markup codes, you can play these games on the JCC boards. Here's where it all began.

Here is the Checkers board setup:

(only the King and Queen are capitalized to balance the spacing)
(the letter n is used for the knight to avoid any confusion with the king)


Taking back a move is not allowed (ie: editing a post to change your move), unless an illegal move was made by accident.

Please don't PM other players telling them what they should and shouldn't do.


Advice:

At the beginning of each move-post, please specify which game it is.

That way mulitple games can go on at once, without all the confusion. And even potentially allow each person to participate in more than one game at a time.

You can also get creative:

Darthness vs (someone)
Darthness vs (someone)

Each time you move a board piece, colorize it (^^ as seen above) to make it easier to know which move is the latest.

Always preview your message before posting it (this is especially helpful when playing chess), that way you'll know if the markup codes are correct and you're less likely to make the wrong move by mistake.


Tips:

Since no actual gameboard is involved here (in other words, no board to get moved or knocked over), there is no obligation to finish a game the same day you start one. A game in this thread could last for weeks, or even months. If it's been a while since either person has moved a piece and your game has sunk a few pages down, then you should Quote your opponets last move before making yours (in the same post of course).

With checkers you can just copy & paste your opponets last move, make a few changes, and post your move. In chess, however, copying the text is insufficient due to the markup codes invloved. Incase you don't know this already, Quote Reply will automatically copy the markup codes nessesary for playing chess. Just push the button, and then remove the /quotes, it's as simple as that.

In checkers, if you get crowned, simply capitalize the letter.

Make a gameboard, move a piece, and put your screen name above it.

Just so you know, I kinda happen to suck at chess. I was only showing an example, not inviting someone to a game. I can play you at checkers though.

You could totally play "Go" on a 9x9 ascii board, too, although I imagine it would be a bit tougher than chess or checkers.

Plus, I reckon not too many folks know how to play "Go."

Sure, but text-chess is a bit more complicated. When you make a move-post, you need to "Quote Reply" your opponets last move, then remove the quotes and any other unnesessary text. Remember to ALWAYS hit preview BEFORE posting the message to be sure the markup codes are correct.

No, copy pasting won't work for chess. Only Quote Reply will automatically copy the markup codes. Infact it's really better to use Quote Reply for any game. IMO

If all the markup coding is too much for you, than we can play some other game.

The thing is, in chess, you need the Bold and Italic markups because, after the game has gone one for a while, it will be very hard to know who's pieces are who's with out having to constantly go back and look at previous posts.

It helps a lot if you color your latest move. Do that by typing [color=name of color]e[/color]
