I preordered it. It is Tolkien, after all.

I'm worried that it would to terrible injustice to Tolkien but I've reserved a copy to be picked up in local bookstore

I have a bad feeling about this... just as I don't really like the published Silmarillion (although I adore the last version in JRR Tolkien's notes). Seems to me neither is/will do/ing justice to Tolkien's thoughts and ideas, although I do approve of distributing his work to the wider public, not only the "hard-core Tolkien scholars".

I won't buy it, simply because the History of Middle Earth probably contains it anyway and with more accuracy...

I haven't read History of Middle Earth, so I won't be able to tell you that. It's interesting thus far though.

    I have a question:

Does Sauron and/or Morgoth appear in person in the story? That would be very interesting though I would be wary of it.

Sauron shouldn't, because he's dealt with in the Tale of Beren and Luthian - he captures Beren, but is defeated by Luthian and Huan, and doesn't seem to play much of a part for the rest of the First Age.

Morgoth will definately be an overarching presence, but unless we get scene's from Hurin's point of view (and from what I've heard that's doubtful) we shouldn't see Morgoth either.

    So, Morgoth but no Sauron?

Surprisingly, all I have heard is excellent things about this book. I figured most people would trash it hard just on principle.

I'd like it if they would eventually do a Beren and Luthien book like this.

Apparently, there's not as much material on Beren and Luthian (or Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin for that matter) to do a complete book based on them :(

I haven't come across Sauron yet. It's a fun, if a little slow read.

I'd actually like to see a Beren and Luthien movie, I think it would be great.

IIRC from the Silmarillion, Sauron plays no role in theis story.

And I bought the book, haven't had a chance ot start reading though. Love the illustrations, though.

Which story? Beren and Lúthien or Children of Húrin?

Because Sauron has a very important cameo in the story of the Lay of Leithian, although I don't think he features at all in Narn I Hîn Húrin

I finally started reading the book. It's ok, but the ballad in Lays of Beleriand is much better, imo.

You may be right in a way, but the form of a novel is much easier to read that an epic poem.

Is there a B&N near you? They usually have better stock than Borders.

Its amazing. I read it in two sittings. REally spine tingling to be reading be original stuff by him in 2007, and theres no doubt its overwhelmingly coming from his pen and mind. I couldnt tell you from John where theres ghost writing - and theres gotta be some.

Well, considering the bare bones of the story have been out for about 30 years, I think it's safe to post some ;)

    OK..

What does anyone think of this being made into a movie? My money's on Peter Jackson to make this into another blockbluster hit. I'd cast Hugh Jackman as Turin and Kate Winslet as Nienor.
