Welcome to the Fifth Annual Aluminum Falcon Awards, Litizens!

Let's kick off our celebration of the best of 2012 with the Best Novel category:

We start with Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse in fifth place.

We have a tie for third, between Scourge and Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories. Opposite philosophies on title lengths, living in harmony!

In second comes X-wing: Mercy Kill, the long-awaited return of the X-wing series.

    Our overwhelming winner, you picked:

Darth Plagueis as the best novel of 2012!

Now we'll move on to celebrating our Best Cover Artist:

In fifth we have Torstein Nordstrand, responsible for the cover of our Best Novel.

Another tie for third, this time between Gonzalo Flores and Benjamin Carré.

Our second-place finisher is no stranger to the Aluminum Falcons, Jan Duursema.

Your favorite cover artist, Lit, was:

Stéphane Roux, for his work on Agent of the Empire!

Want to find out which was the Best Short Story of 2012?

In fifth, Hunting the Gorach by Jeff Grubb.

Fourth place (no tie in this one!) belongs to The Guns of Kelrodo-Ai.

Third is Lost Tribe of the Sith: Pandemonium.

Our runner-up is another Lost Tribe of the Sith story, Secrets.

    Your winner is:

Timothy Zahn's Winner Lose All, which I can't figure out whether it's appropriately or inappropriately titled.

End Game deserves an honorable mention, coming in only one point shy of tying for fifth.

Best Television Episode is coming up next:

First, I'll get a few honorable mentions out of the way for The Clone Wars: The Gathering, Revival, and The Box.

Fifth place is a tie, with The Clone Wars: Revenge and Bounty both picking up equal votes.

Also a tie is third place, which is shared by A Friend in Need and A Necessary Bond.

Our close second-place finisher is Friends and Enemies.

    Our winner by a nose:

    The Clone Wars: Massacre!

Our last category for tonight will be Best Comic Author:

Tom Taylor starts off our finishers in fifth place.

Randy Stradley is taking home fourth place, which means we don't have to figure out what name to put on the award image.

    In third place, Haden Blackman.

Those who have been following the Aluminum Falcons know that this category is always a horse race between the two Johns, and this time around, John Jackson Miller is our runner-up.

So you should have figured out that your Best Comic Author this year is:

    John Ostrander!

Mike Richardson and Jeremy Barlow both get honorable mentions.

A hearty congratulations to all our winners, and stay tuned for the results from more categories tomorrow!

Well, if Detours starts this year that could change.

Interesting that Blackman didn't get at least the silver medal, since the consensus on these forums seemed to be that JJM's KOTOR:W and LTOTS:S weren't as great as his best work and Ghost Prison was so full of awesome it leaked to the floor. I haven't read any of them so I didn't even vote. I thought that Darth Plagueis, Warfare and Lost Tribe of the Sith (the only things from last year I have read) would get enough votes without me.

But last year I finally read this neat little series, called The Mitt'hraw'nduono Trilogy or something like that. Is that new enough to vote for? What about next year?

Let's get the next round going!

We'll start off with the award for Best Comic Artist:

In fifth place we have Davidé Fabbri.

Next is Agustin Alessio, the illustrator of Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison.

In third place, we get our second Agent of the Empire interior artist with Stéphane Roux.

    Doug Wheatley comes in second.

It's no big surprise that our winner for Best Comic Artist is:

Jan Duursema, who has more Aluminum Falcons than she knows what to do with!

Best Reference Material is up next:

In fifth place, we have The Old Republic Encyclopedia: The Definitive Guide to the Epic Conflict.

Fourth place goes to Dawn of the Jedi 0.

The Essential Reader's Companion is our third-place finisher.

The runner-up is Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side, from our good friend Dan Wallace.

    Our winner is:

The Essential Guide to Warfare, finishing way ahead of the pack!

Time to find our who was the Best Novel Author of 2012:

    In fifth place, Troy Denning.

Fourth place goes to Jeff Grubb in his debut as a Star Wars novelist.

    Aaron Allston takes third.

Just ahead of him is John Jackson Miller.

First place? Well, that belongs to:

James Luceno, who wrote your Best Novel of the year, so that makes sense.

Now let's move on to the Best Comic Arc award:

We've got a fifth-place tie between Knights of the Old Republic: War and Dark Times: Out of the Wilderness.

In fourth place, Knight Errant: Escape.

Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm landed in third.

Agent of the Empire: Iron Eclipse takes second place.

Your pick for the Best Comic Arc is:

Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison!

We'll close out tonight with the award for Best Artist:

First, an honorable mention to Benjamin Carré.

In fifth place, the mapmaker Modi.

In fourth place, Best Comic Artist Jan Duursema.

    Doug Wheatley came in third.

Second place went to Essential illustrator Darren Tan.

Your pick for the Best Artist of 2012:

A long-time Lit favorite, Chris Trevas!

Another round of congratulations to our winners, and we'll have yet more results up tomorrow! Discuss!

I don't have the winners for '08 (since we had unpersonalized award images the first time around) or '09 (since I think Coop did the award image that year) handy- but is this the first win for Trevas?

According to my spreadsheet, he won Best Artist in 2009.

edit: he also worked on the Atlas and the Jedi Path, which both won best reference work (the Atlas also won best eu work).

    So I was busy!

Welcome back, after a slight delay, to the Aluminum Falcons, which you now get to enjoy for even longer!

We'll kick things off with our Best Author of the year:

In a tie for fifth, we have Daniel Wallace and Aaron Allston.

Tied for third are our two Johns, John Ostrander and John Jackson Miller. I think we need to play up some kind of rivalry storyline next year.

In second, Jason Fry and his co-authors (most significantly our very own Thrawn McEwok, or Paul R. Urquhart, whichever pseudonym you prefer).

Our winner, 2012's Best Author, is:

James Luceno, also our Best Novel Author and Best Novel author.

The always-tense race for Best Licensee comes next:

    In fifth place, Scholastic.

Fourth place is claimed by Dorling Kindersley.

    Third goes to Lucasfilm Animation.

Del Rey came in second. I didn't notice any votes for Del Ray, so maybe we've finally exorcised that particular demon.

In a surprise result no one saw coming, the winner of this category was a real dark horse:

By which, of course, I mean Dark Horse Comics, who have an uninterrupted stranglehold on this category.

Speaking of Dark Horse, Best Trade Paperback is up next:

Let's kick it off with Knight Errant: Deluge in fifth place.

Just ahead is Knights of the Old Republic: War.

Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm comes in third.

Runner-up: Agent of the Empire: Iron Eclipse.

Drumroll, please -- and the winner is:

A little comic called Legacy: War!

Honorable mention goes to Dark Times: Out of the Wilderness.

Our penultimate regular award will be for Best Series:

Lost Tribe of the Sith takes the fifth.

In fourth is Dawn of the Jedi.

    Knight Errant showed.

    Agent of the Empire placed.

Who took home the big fancy award jpg?

    The Essential Guides won!

An honorable mention for the long-anticipated return of an old, beloved series, X-wing.

Now it's time for the big one, our final regular award, the Aluminum Falcon you've all been waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for, Best Expanded Universe Work:

We have yet another tie for fifth place, this one between Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm and X-wing: Mercy Kill.

In fourth place, Best Comic Arc Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison.

In third place, Agent of the Empire: Iron Eclipse, the Best Comic Arc runner-up. Don't ask me to explain your votes.

The Essential Guide to Warfare, our Best Reference Work, is your second-best EU work of the year.

That means that the award for Best Expanded Universe Work of 2012 goes to our Best Novel of 2012, Darth Plagueis!

There are a lot of nominees in this category, and that gave us quite a few worthy of honorable mention this year: Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side, Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse, Scourge, and Knights of the Old Republic: War.

More hearty congratulations to all our winners, and stay tuned for our Hall of Fame inductees, coming up . . . next!

A bit surprised Darth Plagueis won best EU work overall. It was a great novel, but The Essential Guide to Warfare did a lot more expanding of the EU. Also, artwork!

    Still, congrats to all!

What I've read of the Guide to Warfare was fantastic, but speaking for myself, I always give the edge to story material. The GFFA's an interesting place and all, but the stories are at the heart of it. At least for me.

So Ghost Prison didn't win every category after all...

Ghost Prison clearly deserved to be named Best Novel Author and Best TV Episode. I smell a fix.
