I know for sure that i want to read the books now.

 

Has anyone here seen the LOTR musical? I was wondering because it's coming to London next year and I was wondering if it was worth seeing.

I can imagine it must have been fairly easy to make. You can't go twenty pages in the books(especially Fellowship) without SOMEONE singing something.

 

Sorry, but the idea of LOTR as a musical is just wrong. Almsot downright frightening.

I could maybe see doing it as a three part opera cycle, sort of as a modern day Ring. But on Broadway, next door to Cats and The Producers? Sacriledge!

 

I'm with yankee; I can't imagine it as a musical. Maybe it's because I haven't gotten around to reading the books yet, but I just can't see it.

I mean its not a bad idea I guess, but I can't see it. I'm not sure I would want to.

 

Oh yes it is. Just imagine Gandalf at the Council of Elrond singing (to the tune of How do solve a problem like Maria from Sound of Music):

"How do you solve a problem like the One ring ..."

By the end, the hobbits, dwarves, Arwen, Strider and Boromir have all joined in.

 

Don't forget Frodo clinging on the Ring from time to time

 

And the grand finale, Frodo and Sam on the slopes of Mount Doom singing:

Climb every moutain
Until you destroy the Ring!

Did I mention I'm a big Sound of Music fan?

 

And all the elves, Gandalf and Frodo sing the "So long, farwell" song to Merry, Pippin and Sam as they leave for the Grey Havens.

I guess Frodo could do "I have confidence ..." at some point. Or maybe Sam, as he sets off to resue Frodo after Shelob stings him and the orcs take him away.

Not sure who to have sing "I am 16 ...", though.

Nevertheless, I think we've got the makings of a nice "The Sound of the Lord of the Music Rings" going.

I can't believe I haven't seen this before.
That silly song haunted me in the 1ts and 2nd grade of High school. It was unusualy popular. Creepy.

 

*groans* You wouldn't be reffering to O-Zone's Dragostea din Tei, would you? Out of all of our better bands and singers, exactly THOSE guys had to become known all over the world! It really made me ashamed to be a Romanian, for awhile.

Speaking of horrible things, I saw several stills from the LOTR music a few days ago and one thing will forever remain burned on my retina: Boromir with dreadlocks - and I kid you not!

That was just... wrong.

I thought they were Moldavian, and only were singing in Romanian. Whatever
I truly heart them, though. I've even got a CD.

 

I adore Tolkien's stuff. Right now I am reading The Children of Hurin and loving it!
My favorite book is by far The Fellowship of the Ring. I just love all the back histroy you learn and the excitment of a new adventure it generates. I love the 'feeling' it gives it me and I prefer having the whole Fellowship together. It always make me a little sad at the end when they break away. I always wish they could stay together. Plus it has the best chapter in the entire series: The Bridge of Khazadum.

 

Has anyone ever managed to get through the Silmarillion in one sitting?

 

God no. I am interested in checking out this new Children of Hurin book though.

 

No, I had to draw the Sil out a bit on my first reading. I usually can finish books pretty fast, but this one demanded a little more time and examination. Great book, though.

 

When I bought Silmarillion some time in th mid-80s, I got started on it right away. Got about two pages into Ainulindalë, scratched my head and said "What the heck is this crap?" and put the book on the shelf for 3-5 years. Once I got started again several years later, took me a while to get through it. Let's face it, there's alot going on, alot of names to remember. But I'm glad I got through it, really loved it in the end.

And the LOTR musical opened in London, to some critical praise.
