"this" = +1

For it to be spam, it has to be stupid, pointless and annoying. The status of "this" as spam is shaky. In one instance it may not be spam, but in another, it may very well be spam.

However, I think that it still should be banned, or at least looked down upon, with strict and clear guidelines made about it in a sticky. Even if it isn't spam, I don't think it should be there, and that quality posting should be encouraged.

It doesn't make you look very smart if you post one liners, it makes you look either lazy or stupid. It definitely doesn't support the person you are supporting, and it may even hurt their point. Some people will see who is agreeing, and then assume that they are wrong (or at least be less likely to agree), despite how good their argument might be.

If only there was a minimum word limit for a new reply/topic. Like the submit button would be disabled until enough words were input in the textbox, or it displayed an error message when there wasn't enough words, and not post it until it was fixed. Probably not possible though.

There are plenty of situations where a single word answer is perfectly valid. Why force people to babble on when they can be concise?

 

I agree with jp-30. The snappy one-word reply becomes an impossibility with minimum word counts.

 

Under these guidelines, yes: "this" could be considered spamming.

It all depends on context, of course; a user posting "this" in a number of threads is clearly spamming, while a user quoting a post and adding a "+1" is obviously showing agreement in a l33t manner.

Meaning: we're not likely to start banning people for posting "QFT".

People seem to follow up "this" with elaboration more often than they do for "QFT" or something.


And whenever I absolutely agree with something, I just quote the reply and leave it. It's spammeriffic!

+1 on other sites might be common use to express "I agree with this", but really when on these boards have you seen it used as such?

 

I actually don't like it, and its a reason I don't post here as much (that and only a youtube link posts). Its stupid, nobody cares, nobody reads/clicks, and in the day and age when you are looking for more posters, content over # of posts should be encouraged.

But seeing as everyone else posting in this thread does see it, and your arguing about an issue of how the community perceives something, you sort of just have to except at this point that your reading of the phrase is in the extreme minority, and therefore in regards to the supposed issue in this thread, you are wrong.

 

I'd rather people said more than "this" in a post, considering just saying that adds absolutely nothing to a conversation, but at the end of the day it's much different than "+1" and just not important.
