    train or plane?

price is pretty much the same from what i can see, so it's down to whether spending 10 or so hours on the train is worth it in order to have some time to see the country side and relax and ponder and whatnot.

so, is it worth it? i do like sitting on trains and watching the scenery but i also see the benefit in getting to Melbourne in like an hour and a half and spending more time doing stuff there. anyone made this trip before?

plane, trust me no matter how great the scenery is you end up more tired from a ten hour trip no matter how relaxed you can be.

I have traveled planes and trains many a time.

I've done the trip epic - don't bother with it.

Cramped, uncomfy and boring, especially if you are unlucky enough to get an aisle seat - you can't see a thing out the window. The seats are too uncomfy to sleep in too, even if you get a first class one.

    Plane all the way.

No talk of doing the trip by car?

I've done it a few times.

Definitely fly, I've done both trips a few times and flying is the easier option. The only reason I can think of for taking the train is if you're one of those crazy people who is legitimately trying to reduce their carbon footprint and whatnot.

    Train there - fly back?

The train is all about the journey, and then being able to say that you've done it, regardless of whether its a good or bad experience.

The plane is for when you simply need to get to where you're going.

Having only heard horror stories about train trips overland, I'd fly or hire a car and drive it. Fly, you're there in about an hour. Drive, you can stop when you need to or have lunch etc when you choose but get to see the landscapes as well. I wouldn't train it unless I could afford First Class and then you might as well fly!

Yeah, just saw it on the news, messy to say the least. Only the drivers were on board, so no one was killed. But it is closed.
