At the end of their press conference yesterday, Nintendo unveiled the next Zelda game for Gamecube. Contrary to expectations, it wasn't in the style of WindWaker. Instead, they revealed a new, realistic Zelda. Imagine a massive army of Goblins marching to the backdrop of a red sunset, while a lone rider, Link, charges into their midst. Imagine fighting boar-mounted bokoblins from horseback. Imagine Link fighting a Balrog-like creature that can cause waves of flame to emanate from their body. And imagine all this set to the music from Conan the Barbarian, and you have a pretty good idea of what happened.

This looks like the coolest thing I've seen in the world of computer games since my flatmate bought an N64 the day after seeing Goldeneye on it...

 

It just looks absolutely amazing. But do we have to wait until next year for it?

Nintendo has brought out the big guns.

 

For a man who believes Ocarina of Time is the greatest single-player quest ever created in the history of gaming (that would be me, and about 10 million other people) this is awesome.

Now, for speculation.

Anyone care to start?

 

It looks like Hyrule as we knew it in Ocarina of Time. Link riding out of the Castle gates, and one of the shots looks a lot like the Forest Temple to me.

My guess (and hope) is that it's a continuation of the OoT story. You pick up where you left off as Link, with some new baddie on the loose in Hyrule.

 

Anyone care to start?

Link must battle Ganon, because Zelda has been kidnapped.
But first, he must retrieve half a dozen artefacts.
Them he must complete his quest by retrieve several more sacred artefacts.
Then Link vs. Ganon. Link wins. And Zelda is Rescued. And all is well. Until Next Time.
