Title: A Necessary Deception

Summary: After serving 2 terms as Queen of Naboo, Padme retired from politics...at least officially. Now, several years later a select group of Senators lead by Bail Organa and Mon Mothma have grown very suspicious of Chancellor Palpatine and have decided to bring in someone to keep an eye on him...his old friend Padme Naberrie, who is once again reunited with Anakin.

A/N: In this story, all the events leading up to ROTS have happened with 2 major differences. 1) Padme and Anakin were not reunited during the events of ATOC, thus no secret marriage and 2) The Jedi are allowed to date and marry in this story, thus no secret romance but don't worry, Padme and Anakin will have their share of obstacles thrust upon them.

Chapter 1

Bail Organa walked swiftly through the busy streets of Coruscant on his way to Mon Mothma?s apartment. He had just left the celebration at Senate Office Building where Chancellor Palpatine was still holding court after his miraculous rescue from his Separatist kidnappers. There was something very fishy about the whole debacle.

?He certainly didn?t seem any worse for wear,? Bail thought as he turned up his collar and quickened his pace. He knew he wasn?t alone in finding the Chancellor?s kidnapping just a little too convenient, after all, it was only a few days ago when Palpatine had introduced legislation that would enable the constant surveillance of the Senate building including the Arena, the hallways, and private offices.

The reaction was lukewarm at best. Then, Palpatine was kidnapped from his own office and as if by magic, all resistance to the legislation faded away. Now, most of the Senators were clamoring for the surveillance, after all, even Senators wanted to be safe above all else. Bail grimaced at the thought of all the personal liberties being eroded all in the name of safety. Something had to be done and soon, because there was no telling what Palpatine might want next.

There was something else that was bothering Bail. Count Dooku had long been the ringleader behind the entire Seperatist movement. And for some reason that Bail couldn?t comprehend; suddenly Dooku decided to come to Coruscant. Of course this was an incredibly stupid move because it wasn?t long after that Skywalker killed him. It was just one more thing that made Bail wonder if Palpatine was in fact in charge of this entire situation.

?Senator Organa, welcome.? Mon Mothma?s warm smile greeted him a short time later. ?Please come in.?

?Mon Mothma.? Bail nodded as he walked past her into her spacious sitting room.

?Have you heard??

Mon Mothma nodded as she took a seat across from Bail. ?Yes, just before I received my summons for an emergency Senate session for this evening.? She paused, frowning. ?It seems the Chancellor?s latest legislation is going to pass after all.?

Bail nodded in dismay and then gave her a serious look. ?We haven?t much time to act.?

?We may not have any time at all,? she countered. ?The surveillance is certain to be implemented immediately upon passage of the legislation.?

?We?ll have to get someone in right away,? Bail replied, brows furrowed in thought. The Republic depended on their senators to do what was right and he wasn?t going to let that happen if he could help it.

?We don?t have time to run the security checks??

?I?ve got it!? Bail interrupted, his eyes widening. ?Padme Naberrie.?

Mon Mothma gazed at him quizzically.

?The former Queen of Naboo??

Bail nodded emphatically.

?I thought she retired from politics.? Mon Mothma thought for a moment. ?Isn?t she doing relief work now?

?Officially,? Bail replied with a grin.

Mon Mothma raised a single eyebrow. ?And unofficially??

Chapter 2


Padme made her way swiftly through the Senate Hall on her way to Chancellor Palpatine?s office. Careful not to appear obvious, she made note of the location of the various camera and recording devices while nodding nonchalantly to several acquaintances she?d made over the years.

Even after Bail?s warning, she found it hard to accept every move made by anyone anywhere in the Senate building was being recorded, analyzed and filed away for future reference. She shuttered as she took note of the Senators and their aides moved quickly throughout the hallway, barely speaking to one another. She sighed, saddened by the loss of camaraderie. It was not the same bustling Senate she remembered, and that saddened her.

Other than the obvious change of atmosphere, the Senate really hadn?t changed much since the time she was Queen of Naboo. That period in her life was extremely stressful, but Padme enjoyed being able to serve her people. The day she decided to retire from politics forever was an extremely tough decision, but she didn?t regret it. It was ironic and somewhat unnerving that she was going to spy on the same man she once trusted.

The young man on duty at the reception desk outside the Chancellor?s office greeted her politely.

?Good Morning, Miss Naberrie. The Chancellor is expecting you.?

Padme blinked back her surprise as the aide rose and escorted her into the Chancellor?s office. She had been expecting to be interviewed by a member of his staff, not Palpatine himself. It comforted her to know that Palpatine still held her in such high regard.


?Padme,? Palpatine smiled warmly, crossing the room and extending his hand. ?How wonderful to see you again. Please come in.?

He escorted her to two plush sofas facing each other. It was interesting to note that he was willing to put himself on her level. Just the way he always did when she was Queen.

?I must say, I was a bit surprised when I heard you?d applied for the job as my personal assistant,? Palpatine began once they were seated. ?I thought you were doing relief work for the war ravaged systems.?

?Yes, I was,? Padme replied nodding her head. ?And I loved the work but it?s become very difficult for me emotionally going from one devastated area to the next,? she paused at the remembrance of the horrors she?d seen throughout her travels. ?And I?m in need of a break.?

?Yes,? Palpatine acknowledged. ?This war has taken an emotional toll on us all.? He studied her silently for a moment. ?This position would certainly give you a break from seeing the war, but not from the news itself. Are you certain you?d be up to it??

Padme took her time in answering. It wouldn?t do to have Palpatine suspicious of her motives. ?Yes,? she said a few moments later. ?I think being able to watch the efforts being made to end the war will help give me a new perspective on everything?a new hope that the war will end soon.?

?I certainly hope so,? Palpatine sighed. ?I?m doing my best to see that it does and I would love to have you as my assistant,? he beamed happily at her.

?Thank you, Chancellor.?

?Would you be free to join me for lunch this afternoon?? he asked, rising from the sofa ?I?d like to re-introduce you to an old acquaintance.?

Padme eyed him skeptically.

?Anakin Skywalker.?

Padme froze. ?Little Ani?? She hadn?t seen him since the grand parade on Naboo celebrating the victory over the Trade Federation?s occupation 13 years ago. He would be 22, a man now. At times over the last several years she wondered how Anakin?s Jedi career was going, but she honestly never expected that she would see him again. Well, now she had the opportunity.

?He is my personal representative on the J

 

Oh, I just loved this update.

Hmm, I knew that Padmé wouldn?t be able to resist Anakin for very long, I don?t think that anyone can.

And now they?re going on a date and I can?t wait to see how that will turn out and what is Palpy up to now?
