I think they're too large and bloated to merge, to the point of the result being unreadable.

I would normally agree if he hadn't ended the book with it. Seeing as it's basically a cliffhanger, it seems like a big "LOOK AT THIS! LOOK AT THIS!" message to the reader.

Well, it might looks crude, but...

Judging by the shape of the eggs (AKA, as in the paperweights for the collector edition), I think that the grouchy attitude of dragons, especially females, can be understandable.
