A_J: +2 (I loled at the crap comment) +2 (common sense stuff) +1
kypt: +2 (that 63 was something else) +3 (love the boldness of an actual even pick) +1
ASG: +3 (30% ... when you put it that way, sounds somehow even more impressive) +2 (no-brainer, eh?) +1

The Indians and Tigers open a two-game series tonight. The two teams share identical 65-53 records, and sit in a tie atop the AL Central. Of course, if you look back in the calendar a month and a half ago, you'd see both teams playing .600 ball. With both teams in complete nosedives since the All-Star Break, is our panel buying or selling a happy ending for either of these teams this season?

Let's go Around the Arena and see who answers honestly and who tries to suck up.

For the record, I know nothing about Golf, and I didn't want to lie. Also, you guys smell bad and I don't care anyway, because I'm not playing for the points like you sell-outs! It's all about the sport itself. Seriously.

Now, define happy ending. At this point, neither team is very good...but really, somebody has to win the Central, and I think it'll be Indians. If that's their happy ending, I'm buying it. But if making it to the WS is their happy ending, sell, sell sell. They simply can't compete with the big guns in the AL...at this point they're a bit like Luke Skylwalker in the LotF series...they shown what they can do and it's great and awesome, but most of the time they're just bumbling around being stupid heads. Oh, and I picked the Indians and not the Tigers, because the Indians are playing much better at home...and if you're going to be successfully, you've gotta be more than .500 at home. Plus, I like their colors better.

There's no happy ending for either team. The Tiger's will win the division but get knocked out in the first round whether they're facing the yankees, the red sox, or the angels. They'll play 4 post season games and be done with it.

So the Tiger's being 10 games over .500 on the road doesn't help their cause at all?

Let's not forget that the Indian's only have 18 home games left this season... and 26 road games. 26! The Tiger's are pretty much even the rest of the way, 21 road games and 23 home games. That give's the advantage to Detroit for me.

Not to mention Cleveland's star who averaged 34 home runs, 111 RBI with a .308 batting average the past 3 seasons is only on pace for 25 home runs, 97 RBI and is batting a horrible .254 this year.

I'm going to be honest and say I have absolutely no idea about anything that's been said on this topic and I'd just like to say that I love your colours at the moment, that you are the best Commisioner of any draft ever and when I grow up I want to be like you Inty

Prenn: +2 (good point on happy ending depending on goals) -1 (horrible Star Wars analogy)
A_J: +2 (Great stats on home/road splits) +1 (Great stats on that Indians star) -1 (for not knowing Travis Hafner's name)
ASG: +2 (good info to back-up a pick of the Tigers) +1 (for learning your lesson)
kypt: +1 (at least you posted and tried to kiss up)

But, a big fat -1 to all of you for failing to mention the St. Louis Cardinals of a year ago, who looked pathetic about this time of year, and then won the 11 games that mattered.

Tim Donaghy plead guilty to felony charges today involving gambling and the NBA. David Stern said this was an isolated incident, and several legal analysts say that this shows there isn't too much more interest for an investigation. Are you buying the end of Donaghy's court processes bringing an end to the controversy for the NBA?

Let's go Around the Arena and find out.

    Hell.

    No.

The NBA is the league where the rules allow the most amount of judgment calls by the officials. So a lot of these judgment calls end up being questionable. And there's at least 2 or 3 questionable calls a game, sometimes less but a lot of times much more. And as long as these questionable calls continue to affect the outcome of games, fans are gonna raise their eyebrows and wonder if another Tim Donaghy is taking place.

I believe that it is an isolated incident. But in no way does that mean the controversy will end. People love to speculate.

Whilst this may be an isolated incident, there is no guarantee that that is the case. Unless a proper investigation does take place covering all officials, there is going to be a cloud tainting them all, especially when close games rest on a referee's decision. This is a chance for the NBA to appear to be proactive concerning countering corruption, especially considering the officials are under the direct control of the NBA.

However, being proavtive isn't exactly a quality many sporting organisations share.

To quote a very wise man...

    Hell.

    No.

It's professional sports. There will always be gambling, there will always be scams, there will always be people playing and making calls for money that they don't earn from their paychecks. I pretty much agree with A_J on the issue...but I should definitely get more points than him, because I'm much better looking.

kypt: +3 (I like your solution proposal)
ASG: +3 (I like your gumption, plus the fact that you call for Stern to let someone else come in to clean it up) -1 (but Mark Cuban did comment on the situation)

The St. Louis Cardinals finished a sweep of the Brewers, leaving them only 2 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central. Are you buying the Cardinals riding Rick Ankiel-mania back to the playoffs?

I read in the Around the Boards Update that last question was the last question, so I didn't really think I was still in it.

Anyway, I'm buying it. Their next four games are against the Cubs, who are also ahead of them in the Central, which means that they can at least use this current momentum to keep making ground in their race. At this point, they're close enough to take it, and everything is clicking for them. Edmonds is hot, Ankeil is giving them a huge boost and rallying point, and they're pitching well.

Talking about schedules, the Cardinal schecdule is fairly easy for the rest of the season. They have seven more games against the Cubs (4) and Brewers (3), which gives them great opportunity to make up lost ground...and they play Huston, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati (the three teams behind them in the Central, playing horrible ball) a total of 20 more times, which will be a good opportunity to build momentum going into the home stretch. I think that the cards are right, the schedule is favorable, the right players are making the right plays, and the Cards and their fans have a rallying point. Not sure if they'll go far in the playoffs, but I'm buying that they'll be there, by winning the Central.

Definitely buying and me buying has little to nothing to do with Rick Ankiel. As good a story as he is, he's not the only thing bringing back St. Louis. Here are the wins and losses of the top 3 NL Central teams in the past 10 games:

    Milwaukee: 2-8
    Chicago: 3-7
    St. Louis: 8-2

St. Louis is playing great, but let's face it, they're getting helped just a little bit by the guys above them. Neither Milwaukee or Chicago want to win this division, so it's there for St. Louis to take.

But like I said, it's got little to nothing to do with Ankiel. He's playing good, but he's really only made a huge impact in 2 games. On the other hand, we should be watching some unknown guy who's heating up a little bit. Pujols has 8 hits in the last 4 games and has scored 5 times in that span. After his horrible first month of the season, he's hitting .335 while eclipsing the 20 RBI plateau each of the last two months.

The Cardinals WILL win this division and proceed to lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Mets. :p

PRENN: +2 (good info on playing the cubs next) +2 (great info on their schedule) -1 (for not knowing that "last qualifying match" is not the same thing as last question)
A_J: +2 (good stats on the last ten games) +1 (for making a future prediction ... i like that, in context)
ASG: +2 (good stuff on the division) +2 (thanks for recognizing that Ankiel is at least an enthusiasm boost)
Kypt: At least you know when you're outclassed ... +1

Marco Materazzi has revealed his side of the story on the infamous headbutt of the last World Cup. Revealing the words he says were used to set Zinedine Zidane off. According to Materazzi, he said "I prefer the [promiscuous female] that is your sister". So, what is your take on this? Is Materazzi lying about what he said? If not, was Zidane justified? Is this finally the end of the story? Is this even still a story at all? Am I really posting a soccer topic?

Let's go Around the Arena and see if Kypt can make up enough ground to make the showdown ...

Zidane certainly wasn't justified, especially considering what his absence to tha remaining of that particular game meant. Though, it's easy enough to understand him getting incensed at his sister being talked bad about, it was still a championship World cup game and being kicked out may have cost his team that game.

I'm inclined to think that Materazzi was being at least fairly sincere by being apologetic to Zidane, by saying that he was sorry. However, the fact that he's bringing up his exact wording that set off Zidane, that is going to be gone over in detal in his upcoming book, before it comes out, just screams of a publicity stunt for the book.

It's really not so much a big story as it was, except that it reveals exactly set off Zidane off in the world cup. Besides the wording, it was pretty well known that Materazzi had said something naughty about Zidane's sister.

Yes, you posted a Football thread. :)

well first off, it's obvious that this is just to gain publicity for the book, that goes with question... now on to the stuff that matters...

Kyp and ASG obviously don't know what they're talking about. :p

Costing your team a win is horrible, sure. But when it comes down to it, defending your sister's honor is a little bit more important. ASG doesn't know how defensive guys can be of their sister's, and I'm sure I'm not the first one to question Kyp's masculinity... but if a guy says something like that about my sister, to my face, I can assure you, the guy's gonna regret it.

    Family> some silly european game

I applaud Zidane not only for headbutting the ignorant prick, but also for sharing a name with a badass character from Final Fantasy IX.

    That is all.
