May The Force Be With You.

The Strong Influence of the Force

    Rebel Legion, Puerto Rico Outpost
Coverage by Ineabelle Rodriguez, XO RL PR

It is well known that fans will do just about anything to express their love for Star Wars, from the single act of buying an item to the elaborate making of a fan film. But what about non-fans?, can the Force of Star Wars be that strong to make non-fans engage in a project worthy of hard-core fans? Yes, it can.

At local traditional Masks Festival, in the town of Hatillo, Puerto Rico, members of The Gladiators group selected Star Wars as their theme for the competition. The Gladiators group is one of many groups that participate in this festival with their impressive floats hoping to achieve 1st Place Award. After receiving an invitation to participate at this festival with them, we, the Puerto Rico Star Wars Legion Members (Rebel & 501) decided to interview this group of non-fans who were influenced by the Force.

On December 26, 2009, The Gladiators group leader, Alexis Serrano, was kind enough to receive my visit and tell us the story behind the master piece they created for this festival. With a design that included Vader?s helmet and TIE Fighter ships, there is no doubt about the name of this float, ?The Empire?.

This saga started on April 2009. Motivated by the desire of doing something different, structure builder, Hector Donate, constructed ?The Empire? float employing materials such as newspaper, contact cement, wood glue, piping, metallic mesh, steel rod and lots of fabric frizzles. With the help of three other people, and after 9 months of hard work, the dream had come true. A magnificent float of the size of a truck, able to carry the almost 30 members of the group, their traditional clothing resembling Storm Troopers, and FX effects such as lights, smoke and moving parts. The smoke coming out of Vader?s mask resembled his breathing, and the Fighter ships appeared to be firing.

They took as much care as possible on details; their dedication to this project was so awe inspiring we just had to ask why, why would non-fans choose Star Wars? Alexis simply answered: ?we liked the movie very much??? and we knew many people would like it?

??for the Force is my ally, and a powerful ally it is? ?Yoda?s quote.

On December 28, 2009, ?The Empire? float won 1st place Award at the Hatillo Masks Festival.
Congratulations Gladiators, the Star Wars Fans salute you.

The Force? strong influence it has.
