I worked at a fairly big newspaper, in a medium sized city. We had definite rules for this; mostly they applied to opinion and humor columns. Here?s what I remember, if it helps:

If an adult can tell what the original masked word/phrase is, don?t use it

No strings containing four asterisks. No strings of four or less asterisks where some letters of the original word are still there. No phrases based on cursing, where one word has been asterisked out.

If you have to use something, make it at least five letters (preferably longer). No two identical characters can be side by side (so there is no masking with $$ for SS and the like)

And finally, there had to be a really good reason for using a mask.

I've seen many people cuss, and not be banned. Me, for example.

Also, why is cussing acceptable at the FanFiction board??

Technically, I should probably be banned for a long time, as I've used the following in my story:

Dammit-5 times
Damn-3 times
Ass-2 times
Hell-1 time

So, is the rule, "As long as it's in a story, you can cuss all you want"??

 

I don't ban people for cursing unless it's clear that they did it intentionally to cause trouble. I usually just edit.

As in: Kriff you, buddy. Kriff off!

As in: Sith happens! What is up with this sith!

mara (and/or marajade) = *****
As in: She is such a mara. Marajade is a female dog.

Fluke_Groundwalker, those ("damn", "hell", and "ass") are basically the three words that won't get you banned. We're not about to ban you for words that can be found ina a SW movie, in the case of the first two.

However, anythin worse then those'll get you an edit. Excessive usage may get you a ban, especially if you know better than to swear.

I must admit that we mods were pretty forgiving at the time of the WTC disaster, and understandable so. We'd just edit and forgive, since we understood completely how everyone felt.

 

I think it IS ridicolous how this society has evolved into a "No Cussing zone"

I know 100s of good, smart, fun people that cusses, and they would never raise a bad child in thousand years! Cuz, they are Manager material....who cares if they Cusses???

Who are you TO judge anyone cusses must be uneducated or whatever?

 

They're the owners of the site, that's who they are. They provide a bulletin board where you can whittle away your lives free of charge. All they ask in return is that you follow their rules, however arbitrary you may find them. Is it that big a deal to not curse?

 

Cursing does not correlate with a person's intelligence. I will grant you that. But it speaks volumes about the person. If used effectively, it can emphasize a point. Most of the time it is unnecessary and says to me at least, that a person tends to go with their knee-jerk reaction instead of seeking to express their thoughts in a more civil manner.

Personally, I tend to skip right over the post and file away in the back of my head that this is a forum member who does not contribute to the spirit of the site, has lost focus of what it means by a friendly debate, and someone who lacks the maturity to respect the fact that there may be younger members in here who could benefit from a little bit of innocence. After all, this has all been created for the love of a movie.

 

Just to know, have any of these people implementing this rule ever walked into a middle scool cafeteria and listened? The amount of words supposed to be typed as "*****************************" is enough to cause your ears to spontaneusly combust. I am a freshman in High School and am somewhat sorry to say that I cuss like a &$*$*$*$*$($($))_ sailor. Like several people have said, this is a 13 and over board. If you can see a PG-13 movie without suing the pants off anyone, you can tolerate a little cussing. I don't condone Big Bad swear words, but small ones are all right. If you ask me how I define "small ones" and I don't respond, it may be because I defied the Gestapo..........
