Even at that, you've got to include Asian, South American, and African club teams, if you want the "good team in a bad league" argument to hold water. Minus that, this is just ESPN trying to capitalize on interest in a single event/game. And ruining their soccer credibility in the meantime.

 

They didn't have any to begin with.


They do a good job with the World Cup, and the announcing teams are good for the MLS and EPL matches, but beyond that, it's awful.

So lacking another ultra-mega-hyped free agent willing to fill an hour with self-importance and d-baggery, ESPN apparently decided to make a new statistic. And commence mentioning it every four seconds.

Nope.

 

Yes, but look at it from ESPN's perspective:

If they create the stat, then they can tell us who is best and why without needing to really use metrics to back it up.

Plus, on the success PER has had in the NBA and the hype that surrounded it why not follow a similar path? Oh, wait ... never mind.

 

This probably makes it obvious that I haven't watched ESPN in a few days, but what is this new statistic?

 

That's no shocker.

They have a tendency and ability to create news from their own opinions and/or nothing at all. Instant replay in baseball is one they really hype up. "Everybody is talking about it..." No, really we are not.

 

I presume it's the ONE...the ONLY...TOTAL QUARTERBACK RATING!

I don't know why they are trying to turn every sport into baseball. The vaste majority of this stuff isn't needed or is just redundenat from a previous stat.

Yes. They are contractually obligated to show the games, but for as much as they hyped up USA-Mexico, they didn't give themselves any breathing room if LLWS ran late (like baseball games typically do) and looked incredibly foolish.

 

Meanwhile, WNBA is lucky to get any airtime on ESPN2. Little league getting higher priority than professional sports kind of makes me roll my eyes a lot.

 

QFT. Now that I consider it, I'm sort of glad I'm not in the States to get frustrated about it this year. Instead I can now build up my rage for smart remarks from everyone who hates on NCAA women's basketball this winter.

 

It's not anything major, but when showing a highlight of a walk-off winner, use the home team's feed. The announcers from the Cardinals (whom the Pirates beat with an 11th inning homerun) had no energy in their voices whatsoever.

I think they just use whichever is easier for them to get.

 

They've been using a lot of stuff from Root Sports Pittsburgh over the last few weeks. Today would have been another great chance to use it.
