My comments on the list

Shackles – Mary Mary

A sort of R&B/gospel smash-up duo. The girls aren’t always great, but they have a way around a hook and, of course, they rock the bass. I think I've got a total of two songs of theirs on this playlist.

Carlotta’s Portrait – Bernard Hermann

Hermann’s Vertigo score is my second or third favorite score. Number one has always been, is now and probably always will be The Mission; after that, things get dicey. But it’s certainly my favorite Hermann; haunted, aching, painful, melancholy, lush . . . gorgeous. He never did better.

Now Could I Drink Hot Blood – Patrick Doyle

I think Doyle’s score for Branagh’s epic, four-hour film version of Hamlet is one of the great overlooked scores of the nineties. Of course, the film itself is one of the great overlooked films of all time, the definitive Hamlet, but who cares, right? Doyle just creates a great soundscape, with some really gorgeous themes.

Standin’ on the Corner – Louis Armstrong

It’s Louis Armstrong. Needs no defense. This isn’t one of his most famous, but on his worst day, the man was awesome.

Momma Don’t Allow – Julia Lee

I got introduced to Julia Lee, and this song in particular, via Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour. It’s a nice sort of swing band feel with Lee as the singer in front of the cookin’ band. Also recommended, her definitive Christmas Blues. As Dylan said, “A lot of innuendo makin’ her very popular in Kansas City.” And in my playlist.

Mood – Miles Davis

This is off E.S.P., a Miles Davis album that isn’t considered one of his masterpieces or anything. It’s mostly got a sort of bebop tone to it (if I even know what the heck bebop is), but this track, which closes the album is a keeper. It’s minimalistic, breathy and incredibly quiet. It’s gorgeous and doesn’t sound like anything else on the album. I think it’s the only track off the album I’ve got on my playlist. Mostly, stick to Miles’ classics; but this song is a keeper.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) – The Beatles

I’m a dedicated skeptic when it comes to Sgt. Pepper, which is one of my least favorite Beatles albums. But there’s some genius here. I’m no fan, frankly, of the opening version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band but this reprise is close to being my favorite track on the album (A Day in the Life would be my favorite, of course). It’s incredibly short, incredibly energetic and Ringo is frigging killing it on the drums.

Lay Down Sally – Eric Clapton

It’s not the best song on Slowhand. It’s probably not one of the five best songs on Slowhand. But I’m damned if there’s a genuinely bad song on Slowhand. If there is, it’s not this country-tinged romp.

Couldn’t We Stand – 4HIM

Pop-gospel group. Despite the name, they aren’t a boy band, though they do have some nice harmonies.

The Man Who Wrote Home Sweet Home – Charlie Poole

One of those good old-fashioned, whining country ravers. Introduced to this one on Theme Time Radio Hour too. It’s essentially a high-pitched, completely strange screed against marriage. The Man Who Wrote Home Sweet Home, he never was a married man, don’t you know? It’s kind of unlike anything I’ve ever heard before or since, plus people getting hit in the face with frying pans.

I Want to Be More Like Jesus – Keith Green

Green, before his untimely death in 1982, was, along with Larry Norman, one of the guys who proved that early Christian music was worthwhile. No one could sell a hot piano lick like him; or snarl a protest lyric either. He was fantastic at tweaking “religious” people with his vision of true Christlikeness and his music retains that freshness today. This one’s a little more . . . well, a little less cutting than most of his music, but it’s still good.

Let Me Down Slow – The Rolling Stones

I don’t care what you heard; A Bigger Bang was a massively great return to form. It’s easily the best Stones record since . . . God, the late seventies (not counting compilations, of course). It’s got the snarling rockers, the tender ballads, the thumping disco, the grinding blues. It’s not just a great album in comparison to their work of the eighties and nineties; it’s a frigging great album on its own merits; if this album was released by some band you’d never heard of, you’d be blown away by it. This album would make The Rolling Stones huge even if they weren’t already the Rolling Stones. This sweet little tale of a relationship on the verge of ending is a classic; probably eighty percent of the songs on the album are classics.

Say the Words – DC Talk

I may lose street cred, but DC Talk was awesome back in the day. Their debut, Free at Last, Jesus Freak; I mean, I don’t care whether you’re a Christian or not, that’s some great music. This one’s off Free at Last, probably their best album.

The Lament for the Viscount of Dundee/D. MacPhail’s Reel – Tony McManus

McManus has really got to be the best acoustic guitarist currently working in the Irish tradition. Ceol More is his best album; it’s entirely instrumental and most of the tracks are old Irish folk songs, given a hopped up, joyous treatment. He branches out a bit; the album also features a wonderful acoustic version of Mingus’ Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and a wonderful hymn from the Jewish tradition. But, man, this is great stuff. And his fingerwork’ll put your jaw on the floor. On the FLOOR.

I’m Coming Out – Dorinda Clark-Cole

Now this is modern gospel at its best. This roughhouse, stompin’, high-voltage number isn’t about coming out of the closet or anything; it’s about comin’ out of your trials and tribulations with your HANDS UP I SAID GET YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR AND TELL THE DEVIL THAT YOU ARE COMIN’OUTWITHYOURHANDSUPANDIWANTYOUTOSHOUT AT YOUR NEIGH BOR THAT YOU ARE COMING OUT OF YOUR PAAAAAAAAYYYYAYYYYYAYYYYYAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIN AND YOU well this goes on for about six minutes. I’ve got a video version that goes for about twelve, but you edit these things down for the CD apparently. Yes, it’s live; yes, there’s a choir; yes, there’s a full funk band; yes, they’re raisin’ the roof.

Ancodia – 808 State

Tell me I’m not the only guy who still listens to this seminal electronic group. I think this song was out in . . . 1989 or 90, so, yeah, it sounds dated. But beats like this, I don’t care how dated they sound. Straight up block-rockin’.

Of the Earth – Hans Zimmer

I think Black Hawk Down is one of Zimmer’s absolute best scores. I put it maybe behind Gladiator and maybe behind Prince of Egypt (shut up, that Burning Bush cue is breathtaking). This isn’t one of the really avant-garde pieces on the soundtrack; it’s pretty ambient, but it’s got a great mood to it.

Sunday Morning Coming Down – Johnny Cash

I’ve got the version by Kristofferson on here too and I think I might prefer that one. But Cash’s version is no slouch (is Cash’s version of anything ever a slouch?). It just perfectly captures the melancholy, listlessness of a lonely, quiet Sunday morning after a rough and tumble Saturday night. Kristofferson’s lyric is fabulous and Cash sells it, as he sold every lyric he ever sang.

Heroin – The Velvet Underground & Nico

You think this song needs a defense? **** you. Has any song ever used a string section so well? Has any song ever used dissonance so well? Has any song ever captured the twitchy drug experience so well? The answer to all those questions is no.

Finale – Leonard Bernstein

Okay, yes, West Side Story is probably my second favorite musical of all time. And the soundtrack is a frigging killer too. This climactic bit of the film is, of course, devastating. Even on record, it chokes me up every time.
