As if things couldn't get any WORSE (at least as far as a proverbial slap in the face to those who truly are the BEST SW FanFilmmakers out there), I just saw a commercial on THE SCI-FI CHANNEL for a special (hosted by Kevin Smith) in which they will be showcasing many of the FanFilm entries in the atomFilms contest.

This certainly puts a whole new spin on the "recognition" argument from the previous thread. I mean, even if it is not truly the case, it almost feels like LFL is (for all intents and purposes) rubbing our noses in it with regard to the whole exclusion from the "official" SW FanFilms contest.

You know what the real kicker is ... the voice over on the commerical stated, "see what Star Wars Fans do best."
WHAT THEY DO BEST is what can be seen on websites such as TFN, FanFilmFX and the Star Wars FanFilm Database.

Now, admitedly, I could be jumping the gun here and posting this purely as a result of fired-up emotions. I mean ... perhaps this could actually be a good thing for the FanFilm Community as a whole ... i.e., providing a more broad based exposure for the art of FanFilmmaking. I don't know ... it seems like a double-edged sword. This new LFL/atomFilms exposure of the atomfilms contest entries just seems like such an injustice to the likes of people like Nick Hallam, Justin Dix, DaftMaul, CrewOfTwo, Backyard Productions, Joe Monroe, Marty Hudzik ..... basically ALL of the FanFilmmakers who have put so much of their time, energy, creativity and Star Wars Fandom into their projects.

    DISCLAIMER:
If I have misinterpreted this whole scenario, as I did with the Kevin Rubio quote before, I apologize for getting all excited and fired up like this. However, having been a member of this Forum for quite some time now ... I do feel a sense of comradery and, dare I say .. family with this community. I just hate to see this kind of snubbery of such great work .... even though I understand the "legal" issues involved.

I also want to say this ... for those TFN Community members who DO have films in the atomFilms contest ...
I do wish you the best of luck and I hope that your films are showcased on the SCI-FI CHANNEL special.

Lastly ... I feel it important to mention again that myself and several others are working hard on our "special" website which WE HOPE will be a step toward correcting the "injustice" I described above. It is taking longer than we expected becase we want to make sure that it will be a website that will be both impressive anbd classy ... and do all of you proud in terms of providing the justified recognition that you all deserve. :)

KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK, MY FRIENDS .... OUR DAY WILL COME !!!

This does seem like a kick in the face to TF.N and the rest of us here, but I mean, what can we do?

(Oh, and I can't wait to see Duality, KQ, and especially TESBY on TV!)

    Kevin Smith is hosting?

Well, he is the world's most famous Star Wars fan. At least the most famous guy that talks about being a Star Wars fan. Or something. Many people know he's a Star Wars fan, and he does things like this, so he's an obvious choice.

Well, what we can do is continue to create the kind of excellent FanFilms that we have been over the four/five years ... as well as develop ways, without crossing the proverbial LFL line, of boosting awareness and appreciation of the quality works that are being produced by the FanFilmmakers (hosted and non-hosted) of the TFN and FanFilmFX (and any others of the like which I forgot to mention) communities.

Ways such as AndyBryan and mine's impending website. ;)

    I think this is great!!

Go to google and type in "star wars fan films" (without the quotes)

Anybody care to guess what the first website listed is!!!! W00T!!!

Anyone that really wants to know about fan films will look for more on the net... especially after they tire of the atomfilm selection... these are the people that will share that information with their colleagues...

TF.N is primed to see a surge in viewership... we may not be getting recognition (see all the other threads for why) but its not because we won't be noticed... and if I'm going to continue saying "we" I better get filming!!!

Thanks for keeping us posted tac!

If it makes you feel any better, assuming DARTH VADER'S PSYCHIC HOTLINE wins something this weekend and makes it onto this SciFi show, there's a great big plug in my credits for TF.N and stuff here...

what do you want us to do about it Tac? Spam, hack there server add a couple films, Duality, Storm Ahead Pods trailer? Or just give them a denial of service attack on the day of the show :p But yes if Physic Hotline does win it'll be a big plus. Be sure to include all our names in your speach ;)

I'm not sure exactly what to think. Obviously it's both good and not so good. I'm tempted to say that anything that publicizes Star Wars fan films of any type is a good thing, but at the same time, I hold strong loyalties to TFN. :)

    Dence? Dence? What's a dence? :p

I have to agree with the "double edge sword" analogy/metaphor (I don't know what word to use). Obviously this is pretty bogus that some of the better films aren't being showcased, but at the same time, fan films in general are getting quite a bit of regonition with this show.

Who knows? Maybe with Kevin hosting, it will draw in a big audience, and with a big audience, fan films in general may get a huge explosion of interest. Imagine some normal guy, tuning in cuz he dug Mallrats, so see that all these folks are making Star Wars fan films. After the show, he is so mesmerized, he looks fan films up on Google/Yahoo and BAM!

    TheForce.Net.

He comes on by, takes a look and sees a bunch of films not on TV.

    "What the?"

He checks them out and LOVES THEM! Suddenly, this guy wants to make a fan film too, so he enlists all his friends, and they all talk to their friends, who talk to their friends, and so on and so on.

So, because of one dude who saw the show, now maybe twenty people will start projects. I can see it now. Soon major studios will finance large Star Wars fan films, expecting no profit. It will be amazing...oh yes...amazing...

Okay, I rambled on long enough.

    Peace Out,

    Mark "The Admiral" Rosenthal

Some folks are taking this WAY too seriously. For Christ's sake, if you're making these movies for anything besides fun & to celebrate Star Wars - then you've got a problem. Leave the ego's at work or something. :)

You are right Porthas. Why should any of us want to have our fan film on Sci Fi channel? That's ludicrous. We made our films so that they wouldn't get any exposure and we sure don't want it on sci fi channel. Some of us put in years of hard work to make fan films that really have some content and quality. We don't want them to be seen by as many as possible.

And not to be a jerk.....but......................................
    ......
If I see some really lame short little "comedy" sketch filmed in someones back yard that isn't unique, original and hilarious then I will be PO'ed that it got on SCI FI and not a serious piece of TFN work.

I don't have anything against comedy and parody but if some guy heard about the competition and grabbed a camera and stuck a darth vader helmet on and tells some lame jokes and gets on national television......well.....I think a lot of us who were excluded from the competition will be very upset. For film-makers who put effort and quality into the comedy and parody genre I won;t feel this way. Only if some really lame garbage gets on there.

Hey Porthas ...... Obviously you are missing the ENTIRE point.

Perhaps when YOU put forth the time and effort needed to produce a FanFilm like KnightQuest or Broken Allegience, then you will understand the premise of the topic itself.

Until that time ... stow the attitude, m'kay?

Of course icicle, you missed the point. The point is, it's not that big a deal. You're turning something that should be a hobby into something worth whining about.

It's not. You should be glad that ANY fan film should be spotlighted during this time (before the REAL movie AOTC) so that the fun of Star Wars is enhanced.

If your movie gets shown on the Sci Fi Channel, that's icing on the cake - more fun for everyone involved. If it doesn't - no big deal. You're already milking off of someone else's great idea - there's no real ownership here.

Uh, no, I'm going to have my say, just like you've had yours. I'm saying keep perspective and drop the anti-productive "us vs. them" attitude. It gives fan boys who spend their time goofing around with someone else's great idea a bad name because their self-importance is WAY too inflated.

If that is how you feel, newbie, then what are you doing hanging around here?

They're called FANFilms .... made by inspired FANS of George Lucas' Star Wars saga. NO ONE claims that any of the FanFilms created are better than what Lucasfilm has or will produce. They are instruments of expression ... in which SW Fans can utilize their creativty and talents to create some fun and entertaining extensions of the Star Wars Universe.

THE POINT to the thread is that LFL is, in essense, endorsing the atomFilms FanFilms while snubbing the quality work of the many films showcased on websites such as TFN ... all because of some crazy hang-ups and uneasiness they have over certain FanFilm's content "interfering" with the actual Star Wars saga. The argument is pretty ridiculous ... a FanFilm is a FanFilm - nothing more, nothing less.

THE POINT is that there is a lot of inginuity, creativity and talent that is being,
for all intents and purposes, ignored by LFL.

Frankly, your "fan boy" comment clearly depicts your IGNORANCE of the respect and
comradery that is present on this Forum.

    Point: JediTAC.

    Game, set, match. :p

It seems to me that Lucas gets uneasy, as you put, a little too easily. I mean, there was the porn movie that ripped off Star Wars, and he sued them. Why? He was afraid someone might get it confused with the original trilogy. Granted, there were other reasons too, but that was one of his listed reasons.

What moron mistakes a porn for Star Wars? Myself excluded of course...not that I watch porn...I shut up now.

But really, it's not like someone is going to wander onto this site and say, "Hmm...Empire Strikes Backyard...they made another Star Wars?" and watch it and think it's part of the official continuity, although that would be pretty funny.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I for one would love to see ALL the films on this site get the recognition that the atomfilms flicks get. So, I am going to make my own TV show and awards...in my head. So, you'll be glad to know that this imaginary awards show will showcase all the great work here on this site. Granted, no one will ever see the show, but I have a pretty good imagination. I assume it will be good. I imagine the Llamas having a good acceptance speech. The JediTAC will come out, sort of like the president of the Grammies, and then speak on the horror that is newbie-ism...oh man...it's gonna be great.

I'll let you all know how it turns out.

    Peace Out,

Maybe they wanted to be fair with the limitations that they instituted?

It keeps things in order with the criteria and it poses a challange to the filmmakers. It was more or less like an assignment in school. I give you these set of rules and you see how good you really are.

Besides, would it be fair to match up a 30+ minute serious fanfilm against a 2 minute short parody? I think they should have had different catergories, but hey, it's at least a start. Maybe next time, they'll expand it to encompass all kinds of fanfilms.

Some of those films are actually pretty good too.

I don't agree with Porthas on this subject AND I didn't like the fact that TAC used the word newbie in the fashion he did. I don't think Porthas made those comments because he was new, I think he made those comments out of ignorance for what we do here. Everything else TAC said is right though. Just my two cents.
