As inane and worthless as many American popular obsessions are, I do think they are qualitatively superior to celebrating royalty in one particular sense. Americans avidly follow peoples' lives for something that those people have actually have done, even if those things are only having a sex tape, a train wreck of a personal life, or embodying enough stereotypes simultaneously for people to enjoy looking down on you. Royalty, by contrast, is idolized in a way that is completely disconnected from their deeds as individuals, and focused entirely on their relations by blood or marriage. Like we just saw in another thread, an entirely unremarkable young woman who has made no further significant achievement than earning an undergraduate degree was suddenly fawned over, and it was heavily suggested that normal people weren't "worthy" of associating with her. I think that is fundamentally wrong.

Everyone has different things they get excited about. I'm fine with that. Fandom has its own unique set of things to enjoy, too. Personally, I actually like Prince Charles's advocacy on the environment, and am something of an admirer of the King of Spain for the choices he made at the end of Franco's reign. But such adoration should never be owed or asked merely by merit of someone's family. It's a wrong-headed attitude.

I'm amused by how much people seem to care enough about either Hollywood Celebrity or British Royalty, to argue about their merits.

 

Just because nobody cares about hockey or Canadia doesn't mean you have to get all butthurt.

Cause I'm amused by something means I am butthurt? I would think those would complete opposites.

Not to mention...they are Canadian Royalty as well.
