They tend to keep their dirty little secrets hush hush or when they find out a secret, the Jedi and the Sith they keep certain secrets a secret so others wont find out about the secret. Just like the Freemasons/Masons

Uh-huh. Apart from the the flat-out bigotry of the Freemasons against, well, anyone other than the races, creeds & groups that weren't their own from the very start.

The very disparity we've seen in Jedi & Sith across six films (not to mention the EU) would seem to suggest that they're absolutely nothing like the Freemasons at all.

Those miserable old fools can carry on with their silly handshakes, robes & ceremonies until they go broke, which won't be long. No one cares any more, despite the damage they've done over the years with their silly little club. They don't actually have magical powers (although many of them still believe they have the power to open 'portals' to other dimensions).
The Simpsons summed up what the Freemasons really get up to - "Now let's all get drunk & play ping-pong!"

The Jedi got stuff done. The Sith got stuff done. The Freemasons have always been a pathetic brotherhood of prejudiced losers desperate to consolidate whatever power they had amongst themselves & convince each other that they could keep progress at bay. Not any more. The Jedi were actually defeated, they didn't whither & die like something left on a shelf for too long.

Let me put it this way - a few years ago, I was able to enter the Great Masonic Hall in the city I live in, I learned the secret handshake, then I got off my face & enjoyed myself at the dance party I was attending there. The once-great Freemasons had hired their hall out for a rave, & one of their employees told me all the secrets of the Brotherhood as we enjoyed the, er, 'euphoria' - for want of a better acronym - we were experiencing.

Can you imagine either the Jedi or Sith letting this happen?

The Knights Templar are probably the best Western historical model for the Jedi Order. They even got Order 66'd: linkie

    That's it. The Knights Temps.

But Nub, if the Masonic Temples are being rented for raves and a Master Mason is telling you all the "secrets"(there really aren't any)then doesn't that go against you're argument they're so secretive?

    Just sayin'.

I never said they were particularly secretive anymore, although they do like to have their little rituals outsiders aren't supposed to know. The guy who showed me the handshake & told me about the rituals wasn't even an actual Mason, he just worked there.

They're like a bunch of ten-year-olds meeting in a treehouse with a sign on the door saying 'NO GIRLS ALLOWED', except their sign would say 'NO JEWS, CATHOLICS, BLACKS OR ANYONE OTHER THAN GOD-FEARING WHITE PROTESTANT MALES ALLOWED'.

And yes, I agree the Knights Templar are one of the closest real-world parallels for the Jedi. Shaolin monks as well, to a certain extent.

My great-grandfather was a Freemason and he was not a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant ;).

Knights Templar/Samurai/Shaolin Monks = inspiration for jedi.
