Amph The List Thread: Scenes in Movies You See a Lot on TV but still watch every time you find them on

A Guilty Pleasure film is one that is often actively bad, but one which you watch every time you see it on TV anyway.

1. Best defined as: "Why am I watching this when I could be watching Bergman's "Winter Light"? [Answer: Who really wants to watch mid-career Bergman? It's a complete downer]

2. A film you'd be embarrassed to be caught watching. By anybody.

So list your guilty pleasures and the reasons why.

1. "The Quick and the Dead" This is stupid, terrible, unlikely and not particularly well scripted or directed. It does have a crackerjack male cast and set-up, though.

2. "Kelly's Heroes" Very bad. Badly directed. The script sucks. Anachronisms abound. Silly. But Sutherland, Savalas and Eastwood do something to make themselves watchable. Don't ask.

3. "The Producers" (the original) Mel Brooks made this on a shoestring, and he's just beginning his career, so it's often awkward. I dislike Zero Mostel, but he does have timing to die for. Gene Wilder is hilarious, as is the musical number. Plus the concept works. And works.

4. "Start the Revolution Without Me" No third act--and I do mean none--but Gene Wilder and Hugh Griffith (as Louis XVII) are fantastic.

5. "Quigley Down Under" Stupid premise and risible script. However, Selleck, San Giacomo, and Rickman have boatloads of chemistry.

6. "The Lost Boys" Silly, and Jason Patric is dull. The rest of the cast is not, however. Great first five minutes.

7. "George of the Jungle" *Extremely* silly, and I usually hate infantile male comedy, and they don't come any more infantile than George. However: John Cleese plays an ape, and the supporting cast has a ball.

8. "Slap Shot" The movie is kind of a mess, and Hill isn't a very distinctive director. But the cast is terrific, and the hockey jokes make me laugh every time.

9. "Bad Cop, Bon Cop" A bilingual hockey comedy. I think you have to be Canadian. The film sucks, but the hockey crime jokes are great.

10. "Twins" Stupid in every way, but the cast (especially DeVito, one of my least favorite actors) sell it like crazy.

I define guilty pleasure movies a bit differently. For me it's more that I actually feel a bit guilty for liking them in that my liking them reflects some of my personality flaws.

 

The David Lynch version of Dune. The opulent production design and quotable lines just make it beg to be watched.

 

Every one of those movies rules.

 

1. Plan 9 From Outer Space - Do I need to explain? It's awful, and that's why I love it.

2. The Room - See above

3. Bride of the Monster - See above

4. Godzilla's Revenge - See above

5. Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land - God tier billiards scene

6. Sabata - Ehi amico! Che Sabata! HAY CHIUSO! Lee Van Cleef is a budget rate Sartana (Made by the creator of Sartana, no less!) Plus, the bad guy has a gun that's also a banjo. I'm not making this up. Also, it's ironically much easier to find than the series it ripped off.

7. Conan the Barbarian - Let's be honest, this is a two hour music video. You're watching it for the soundtrack, and possibly Arnold Schwarzenegger attempting to emote.

8. Kung Pow: Enter the Fist - Hilarious sendup of kung fu movie dubbing, but the humor is sophomoric. ... Actually, sophomoric is giving it too much credit. I shouldn't laugh. I do anyway.

9. Cannibal Holocaust - Submitted without comment.

10. Night of the Living Dead - I don't like zombie movies. Zombies are moronic. Damn our popular culture for attaching itself to the zombie. But I can't hate this movie! The ending makes it so poignant! The effects are convincing despite the budget restrictions! It's accidentally in the public domain! I can't hate it! I just can't.

 

I don't really feel any guilt about the films I like. Now, watching terrible TV, that's a guilty pleasure.

 

This, except I haven't used my TV in ages.

 

The Towering Inferno is the film that cheers me up the most.

Superman Returns is long and boring, but it's my kind of film.

Never Say Never Again is awesome, and I don't care who knows it. In a similar vein, I've got a lot of time for A View to A Kill, which has arguably the strongest Roger Moore/Grace Jones sex scene ever committed to film in it.

Rush Hour is also a favourite of mine, and I'm a huge fan of Adam McKay's films, even though I feel like I shouldn't be.

Oh, and Ford's Mary of Scotland. It may be a laugh riot, but it's a tremendously photographed piece of work.

 

No one should ever by ashamed of liking that.

It's worth it just for the scene where Andrews schools McKellen on his choice of attire.

On a hammery scale of 1 to 10, Andrews as Sir Percy is well over 9,000.

Some of these movies are not bad actually; it's just that they have horribly bad elements. Sixteen Candles, for instance, I will defend as a great comedy to my dying day. Except for all that unfortunate Long Duk Dong stuff. That is embarrassingly bad and I would hate for someone to walk in on me watching one of those scenes. The rest of the movie is gold.

 

This was easily among the top three comedy films of the decade. What's "guilty" about it?

 

Another one: "The Dirty Dozen"

 

No one should ever feel guilty about liking The Dirty Dozen.

 

Not sure I could put together a full list/Top 10, but I watched one that would definitely be on it last night -- Jackie Cha's Rumble in the Bronx. Love how it doesn't even try to cover up that it's filmed in the Pacific Northwest. And the fight sequences are brilliant, though I've never figured out why the gang has a large assortment of cross-country skis at their hang-out, never realized there was such a big black market for them.

 

You just named one of my top five favorite films of all time as a guilty pleasure.

I don't think I have any guilty pleasures. Mostly because I don't consider anything I watch to be bad. See, I consider a bad film (that is, a badly made film) to be fairly unenjoyable, otherwise it wouldn't really be badly made. So any film I find enjoyable seems to be well-made, and therefore I have no guilt about watching it, nor am I embarrassed to talk about it. And I certainly think it's a film of quality. Most films that people consider "guilty pleasures" I find pretty detestable and don't enjoy watching.

I'm not certain if that last paragraph was very clear. I probably could've written it better. Oh well.

Anyway, films I like and think are good (and therefore don't consider guilty pleasures) that others may disagree with me on are few, but they include:
- The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (still have to see the sequel)
- UHF
- Hot Shots (and the sequel, Hot Shots Part Deux)

None of them are flawless, but I don't consider them bad either. I actually find The Lost Skeleton and UHF to be pretty well-made and I like them a lot. Hot Shots and the sequel aren't as good (though I like the sequel better than the original) but they're still a lot of fun.

Oh, and apparently The Producers.

Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder were amazing. I loved the plot, the acting, the jokes...it all works fantastically for me. I have to say though that my favorite thing from the movie is Dick Shawn's character LSD. I find his audition scene tobe quite brilliant, and honestly one of the most memorable scenes in any film I've seen. And I've seen plenty. I just love that movie. It's brilliant.

So stop calling it a guilty pleasure.

 

Yep, same here. I'd blush to admit what I watch on TV.

 

Yeah, The Producers isn't a guilty pleasure. It's Brooks at the top of his game. It's a classic.

 

I suppose "Blazing Saddles" is a guilty pleasure. It's awful.

I watched Commando on AMC last night. Definitely a classic guilty pleasure. "Where's Sully?" "I let him go."

The body count is staggering, as is Rae Dawn Chong's lack of acting talent.

 

Damn, if I had said Naked Gun I could have replied with "O.J."

Haw haw haw.

Well, that applies to The Towering Inferno anyway.

As for Rush Hour it's a shameless Lethal Weapon rip-off that stars Chris Tucker. That's more than enough to be guilty about. It is completely hilarious and awesome though, no doubts there.

The sequels are just awful, though.

 

Major League - Only if it's on cable, this movie is unwatchable without the swearing.

Slap Shot - I know Dave Hanson(he played Jack Hanson in the movie) in real life from playing hockey at the Neville Island sports complex when I lived in Pittsburgh.
