Rohan

The battle was over, the Moria orcs having fled in disgrace, and the field was littered with the bodies of the dead and dying. Éomer had finalized the division of his forces. He gathered the other generals in his army and made the announcement. ?Théor, you will stay here in Rohan with five hundred men. You will guard Rohan against attacks like this. I will take the rest into the territory of Saruman and engage his armies in battle. I have read disturbing reports of large numbers of troops in the Fangorn area, so that is where we shall march.?

IC: General Gaal in Enedwaith

General Gaal watched as the 400 archers from Isengard arrived, he was very happy to have them, but still he knew that the battle to be fought in the coming days would prove to be difficult, for both Rohan and Isengard. The river crossings were destroyed, there would be no way for the first army of Rohan to cross it especially with a catapult in tow, any option they had would leave them open to massive losses from Isengards archers.

The new army in Dunland was smaller in size, but the calvary of Rohan was regarded as the best in all the lands, then again the army of Isengard was by far the best in the land as well. This would break one nation, General Gaal decided it would be Rohan that lay broken at the end of the day. "Captain Dantrag, take command of the archer units and shadow the army across the river. Be sure that if they attempt to cross the river you are there to rain arrows down upon them the entire time." Captain Dantrag nodded and ran off to assemble the archers to guard the river.

General Gaal then blew the horn at his hip to assemble his army and fully engage the army of Rohan, this time they would not stop until all who stood opposing them had fallen. Man's influence in the South would end this day, and with it the nation of Rohan. Again the horn blew, its call spurring the warg and infantry forces of Isengard toward Dunland. The great columns moved at a fair pace, its scouts rode ahead as always to watch for enemy forces and find positions that would be easy to hold.

IC: Captain Grumat, Marching toward Rohan

Captain Grumat stood at the front of a great host of orcs, all marching toward a single purpose and goal, destruction. Saruman had sent new orders for them, they were to engage fully the army riding from Rohan, and all 3000 men were eager to do so. For too long have they waited, all the time watching as men took the good land, only the scraps were left for orcs. No longer, today the men of Rohan would pay for years of oppression with their very lives.

The main part of the enemy force was moving off into the distance, leaving behind a few hundred archers. The archers were obviously there to prevent the men of Rohan from crossing the river. Théodred decided that the other forces were really gone and that it was not a trap. He knew if the opposition was willing to pull forces away from this crucial position, they must be pretty desperate. So it fell to him to destroy the archers and bring his troops into Isengard territory. ?Captain, bring the catapult and archers into position. They will attack the enemy archers. The cavalry will charge across the river as fast as they can. When they reach the archers, they will kill them. The infantry will follow behind the cavalry.? ?Yes,sir.?

?Sir, we have scout reports of an enemy army heading this way.? Éomer turned his full attention on the man. ?How many? What is the army?s makeup?? ?Our men guessed about three thousand. All infantry.? ?Good. We should be able to deal with them rather easily. How close are they?? ?The enemy is still a ways off.? ?Then we will not move into battle formation just yet. Continue to advance.?

Haim had been alerted to the enemy army approaching his position. The army was more numerous, but his cavalry was the best in the world. He would have to trust his soldiers. Haim turned to a lieutenant. ?Assemble into the arrowhead formation and continue to move forward."

"Leave?" Treebeard said puzzled. "Why would Saruman want these lands?" Suddenly the idea hit him, Saruman wanted to harvest the trees. His mind hearkened back to what the Elf had told him, and he regretted his decision. The Ents were alone, as they always were, and now Treebeard wished it wasn't that way.

"Ask Saruman where he recieved his mind of metal!" Treebeard said. He then let out a blood curdling scream that was heard throughout the forest. "We will not abandon Fangorn!"

Although the trolls were big, mean, and tough, they were also stupid animals. As they made their way into the midst of the Angmar encampment, they were scared and confused by the tactics the infantry and calvary were using. Finally, as if some shroud had been lifted off of them, they were aware of the Witch-King's Dark Power and they feared him. The surviving trolls retreated back to the troll shaws.

The charge of the Hobbits was soon halted by the armies of Umbar and Rhun. Calvary from Umbar and infantry from Rhun began flanking the Hobbit army and targeting the archers. The untrained Hobbit army did not know how to react to tactics from battle hardened warriors. They could feel they were fighting a losing battle, and being this close to the river, they were succeptable to attacks from reinforcements arriving from Umbar. They would be better off fighting closer to their homes, in Hobbiton. The women and children would be evacuated by now. A horn sounded, and the Hobbit army turned and fled the battle area, heading to Hobbiton.

OOC: I should be able to get enough time to make a post in the morning, but I did have one question regarding this...

"The cavalry is to charge across the river at top speed and mount an attack on the archers."

How does a cavalry charge across a river when there are no passes left?

The name of the river that makes the northern border of Dunland and Enedwaith is the River Gwathló, here is the description of it...

"The Gwathló was wide enough that it could be sailed on all the way to where its tributary Glanduin met the river."

source, click on the river name for a description of it

The way it sounds the river is crossable only by ferry or boat anyway.

Raine smiled as the Hobbits withdrew, it would give her men a chance to rest and her a chance to survey the battlefield. She jumped back onto her horse and rode over to the Umbar king.

"Vladimor!" Raine shouted raising her arms in traditional Rhun greeting. "It would seem the Hobbits have withdrawn to their town. May i advise a seige, although our numbers far outnumber theirs it would be unwise to engage them on their conditions. I intend to send my spies in tonight to burn their stores, if we're lucky it will burn half the town!"

It did not say anything specific, but if ships can be sailed up it I would think deeper than a horse could cross. It gave some info about long ago when the river was used by the invasion fleet that took over Enedwaith ships were sent up it to offload its army.

IC: Captain Gnarf, Fangorn

As the great Ent reared back and released a mighty roar the Captain realized that all hope for diplomacy was at an end, Saruman would be furious for his failure but now was not the time to worry about that, there was an Ent to bring down. He took the firey brand in his hand and threw it with all his might at the Ent hoping it would hit and set it to fire, then drew his own sword and commanded the forces of Isengard to attack.

Tag: Jango for Treebeard

IC: General Gaal, Dunland

The Uruk Hai General of Isengard continued to ride at the head of the great column of forces in Dunland, his scouts still had not seen any sign of the Rohan calvary, but they must be close now. He sent out additional scouts to widen his sight to ensure no ambush attacks were made, not that an ambush was easy to pull off with a calvary anyway.

Tag: dontlookatmethatway, Jango

IC: Captain Dantrag, River on northern border

The Captain ensured that his archers could hit forces crossing the river, yet still be out of range to any archers actually on the opposing riverbank. The catapult was of little concern, all eyes keep it in mind but with long reload times it was rather easy to continue shifting out of harms way. Rohans force looked to be preparing to cross the river, which would be a minor miracle and require horses to walk on water, but still the archers would shadow them and be at the ready to send waves and waves of deadly arrows into them as they tried.

IC: Nargoth the Destructive

The sigh of releif was a loud one when Nargoth's army finally came in sight with the Orc incampment outside of the Grey Mountains. Releif could be felt all around the camp, for with the arrival of these rested troops came an almost assurance of victory.

Upon entering the camp, Nargoth walked up to his general. With hate and excitement on his visage, he growled "are your men ready for battle?"

The general cowered. "Y...Yes sir. When ever you say so....."

"Then what are we wating for?! We attack now!"

Nargoth turned to his infantry commander. "Split your Wargs up into two even groups. Flank each side of the fortress and come in after the battle has already started. Left attacks first, two minutes later, right attacks. Got it? Move!"

Nargoth then turned to his Infantry General, and second in command, Twisthate. "Take 1000 Men and follow the Wargs to the right. Attack the flank with them, or a little later. The rest of the infantry is with me, and we will attack head on."

He turned to the mass of soldiers now awating his commands.

"The forces of light are trying to take over the world and destroy our way of life. We cannot let this happen! This battle is our first step towards people respecting and fearing the name of Moria. Fight with no mercey, fight for Moria!"

The mass surged onward towards the awating enemy...

Théodred knew he couldn?t cross the river at this point, but that didn?t bother him. What he did know was that there was a ford that could be crossed about a day north. He decided to leave his catapult here with the archers to guard it. His cavalry would head north to the ford. If the enemy archers tried to follow, the cavalry would leave them in the dust. Once the cavalry was on their side of the river, they wouldn?t stand a chance. Théodred turned to his lieutenant. ?Cavalry are to go at top speed to the river crossing in the north. The reserve force from Isengard met up with them shortly after they crossed into Rohan, now their numbers were 3500 strong, but a mighty calvary was yet to be confronted. With scouts out they continued to search for the calvary that Saruman had warned was riding toward Fangorn.

Scouts came back to report that the calvary of Rohan was riding north, probably to find a crossing. They had left their catapult and archers behind to gain speed, the Captain made a quick decision. "We march to Dunland, now!" At a fast pace the archers could probably reach the General's forces before Rohan's calvary could make it to the next crossable ford in the north, without a second look back the 400 archers set off at a fast pace to rendevous with the larger force in Dunland.

Éomer knew the enemy would be in sight any moment. The scouts had reported it to him just a moment ago. The battlefield that both sides were marching toward consisted of hills on both the Rohan and Isengard side. In between this was a large plain. The plain was flat except for a hill rising just slightly towards the Isengard side of the battlefield. Éomer?s scouts had estimated that both forces would arrive at the same time. ?Spread out,? he ordered ?and watch the flanks for signs of an ambush.? Finally his troops came to the crest of the hills on their side. Éomer expected that the enemy was in the same position. Without looking to see what they were doing, he gave out the orders for the battle. ?The fastest cavalry will try to make for the hill in the middle of the field. Once that hill is reached, the cavalry will either stop or charge depending on what the opponent does. If the enemy goes down the hill and attacks, they will charge and the rest of the soldiers will charge behind them. But if they stare down their noses at us from atop the hills, everyone will stop and not go beyond the hill in the center of the battlefield.?

IC: Saruman, Isengard

Saruman watched as yet more troops poured out from Isengard's gate, 1500 soldiers were to march to Rohan and another 1500 to Fangorn. This war was not proceeding to his design, and something must be done about it, he must enter into the fight himself to ensure victory. The ancient wizard, powerful and wise, grabbed his staff and riding cloak and then headed off to the stables and mounted his own Warg. With a kick to its side Saruman the White rode to the column of troops marching into Fangorn, he would stand against the Ents, with his power the protectors of the forest would be defeated. They would ride to the border of the forest, and there they would wait for the forces inside to pull back into the plains.

IC: Captain Gnarf, Fangorn

As his orcs and Uruk-Hai chopped at the mighty Ent, Captain Gnarf spread orders to retreat to the south once he had fallen. Saruman had sent a message that additional forces would be waiting there, with Saruman at its lead. He wondered aloud as he watched his men fight the Ent, "Can even Saruman ensure victory over the Ents?", he had to admit however that he did not know the limits to the wizards power but he did believe that the fight for Fangorn would be long remembered.

IC: Captain Grumat, Rohan

The orc captain surveyed the battlefield, he could see Rohan's forces now, but he would not run headlong into a field that favored a calvary. He ordered his force to stay on the high ground, if Rohan was to root them out they would have to fight for every inch of land. The hills would also help to strengthen the defense against calvary charges, Isengard would benefit greatly from this. The Captain surveyed his troops as they prepared defensive lines against calvary charges, longspears and sharpened poles would help to stop even the largest of horses.

IC: General Gaal, Dunland

Captain Dantrag arrived with 400 archers and was given orders to line-up behind the infantry. If any charge was made by the calvary of Rohan they were to fire at will, Rohans men will die by the dozens under a steady rain of arrows before clashing against General Gaal and his men. His Warg Riders and infantry were under strict orders not to charge, he would not allow them to be lured into the open for Rohan's calvary to ride through them as they wished. Even with another division of men this fight would not be easy, though the future was unsure there remained hope for victory still.

IC: The Lord of the Nazgul
Location: Encamped, The Ettenmoors

The Witch King peered over the battlefield as the hit and running Calvary Divisions did their work. The groups stunned and confused the trolls, with them attacking one spot, and the riders being gone in the next. And sadly for the trolls, they were far outmatched, the calvary men hitting them tough and hard. Eventually, the trolls moved back into the shaws, the Witch King very pleased.

The Riders did not follow, as that was not within their orders. They took down a few trolls as they were in retreat, but dared not follow them into the wilderlands of the shaws. The Calvary gained their advantage on the open field... not in the canyons and forests... and his riders knew that. The Hez'rias pulled away, and arced back to the camp.

The Black Captain turned from watching them and trotted over view where the Infantry Division was encamped. There were some casualties... it seemed, from no doubt the now dead troll corpse that piled at the edge of the camp. But these were minimal, like the Witch King had forseen. He could hear the happy sounds from the camp of men celebrating and cheering, ecstatic at their victory over the mass of orcs.

As they should really...

It was an impressive accomplishment to turn back to tide of trolls.

The Witch King waited as Commander Piter climbed the hill. He would speak to the man, and.....

A message was coming, communicated through the presence of one of his Wights. Lystro.

"My Lord." the spiritual message whispered... "The City of Foroth has been ensieged by the Army of the Fordowaith. The Snowmen have holed up in their city, waiting for us to make the first move. Your presence here would serve as a great boon for our military."

The Witch King could see, in his mind, the snowy city, and the Army of Angmar encamped there. Yes. He could go. The Witch King communicated as much to the Wight.

"Commander Piter." he said as the man approached. "I shall be taking my leave of this group and shall be heading to reinforce Norik and his troops up North. You are to hold your position here at the Ettenmoors, taking care to be on the look out for counterstrikes from the Trolls. They are stupid creatures and may not get the message from their defeat today. Keep wary posts out on the Shaws, and if they come, employ the same strategies. Withdrawn infantry, calvary hit-and-fades. Keep the Ettenmoors until I return or you are instructed to do otherwise."

Piter saluted professionally, and affirmed his Orders, upon which the Witch King spurred his horse onward and Northward, flying like the Wind to the besieged city of Foroth.

Commander Norik smiled as he was watching his men deloy around the city. He was a bit annoyed at the lack of retaliation from the city, but it seemed they were too late now.

The men were dispersing to their clock-point positions, when a call was yelled out. Trebuchets fire.

"Disperse!" Norik shouted, speaking into a megaphone. He really hoped his in-squad commanders were smart enough to figure this all out. "Spread out and avoid the fire! Catapults don't work well against moving targets!"

And Norik hoped it to be true. Although it was hard to exactly pinpoint where the stones fell, making your troops mobile reduced casualties. Soon the icemen would either run out of rocks or be wiser and not waste them. Either which way Angmar won. Either they wasted their rocks and had nothing to throw at the siege towers....

Oh yeah.

"And get those siege towers further down the road!" Norik barked to the towers' troll crews. "I don't want any suprises."

The towers were further away, but still not totally out of range. A lucky shot could really screw things up.

Now where was he...

Right.

The enemy wasn?t just going to roll over and die, no matter how much Éomer wanted them to. He turned to a subordinate. ?Extend our forces in a ring around their position. We will come at them from all sides.? ?Yes, sir.? The soldier rode off and Éomer eventually saw his troops moving to surround. His subordinate rode back. ?Everything is in place. Shall I give the order?? Éomer hesitated to engage. Then he felt a rush of dark energy. His face twisted in a bestial snarl. ?Sir? Wha-?? The inquiry stopped as the bloodlust swept over the rest of his forces. Éomer drew his sword and roared wordlessly, spurring his mount forward. As the armies of Rhun and Umbar approached, Hobbit arhcers began firing volleys into the midst of them, and the Hobbit Infantry made for one last charge. As the Hobbits were charging to meet the Armies of Rhun and Umbar, a horn was heard blowing to the North. All eyes turned and focused on the source of the horn. Suddenly, two thousand Rangers of the North appeared. Long had the Dunedain been the protectors of the Shire, even before the days of King Elessar, and they were not going to let the Shire fall unyeilded.

"Well that was... unexpected." Was all Raine could say apon seeing the rangers. She turned to Vladmir and unsheathed her scimtars. She frowned under her easterling armour. "I will send for reinforcments, until then we must destroy the hobbit folk and occupy the town. We must all but ignore this new threat until we finish what we started."

Yeah, I kinda hoped you would :p

Battle of the Shire

Vladimor smiled inwardly as he watched Raine give out orders to her troops. In many ways, she was more of a natural commander than he was. Certainly he was no warrior, and yet she wore the armour with the same ease that he soldiers did, and on the battlefield she displayed the same courage. He, however, was unsure and overly cautious. Though, sometimes, perhaps his thoughtful mind could still be of use. Such as in this situation.

"I disagree, Lady Yubari," he announced from his horse, riding to the side of his ally. "Halflings can wait. Rangers cannot. However, if you insist on sending your troops into Hobbiton, my men will engage the newcomers."

He turned to his own troops, who were ready and willing for more battle, having only tasted it so far in the first clash with the Hobbits.

"Scarskins!" he cried with fierceness he did not know he had. "Fire a volley at the rangers, then retreat, Blackguards, move in afterwards and engage the foe! Warbringers, attempt to flank the rangers on the left side! Move!"
